"In hypothetical matchups between President Trump and the top five Democratic presidential candidates, one key number is 40. It's the ceiling of support for Trump..."

"... no matter the candidate. It hovers close to his job approval rating, which has stayed in a tight range since being elected."

Said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Mary Snow, quoted in "All Top Dems Beat Trump As Voters' Economic Outlook Dims Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Dem Primary Stays Stable With Biden Holding The Lead" (Quinnipiac).

I've often wondered about the correspondence between "approval" and voting behavior. I myself tend to disapprove of all the politicians, but I do pick one to vote for in the end. In 2016, I was forced to vote for a presidential candidate I disapproved of, and I expect to get stuck doing the same thing in 2020. But, here, Snow is saying that the 2 numbers really do correspond when it comes to Trump.

By the way, we were all talking about the 3-way tie — Biden, Sanders, Warren — in the Monmouth poll that came out the other day, but look how there have been 6 — or at least 5 — polls since then without any confirmation of the loss of Biden's lead:

I don't have a MAGA hat, but I agree with this. Especially as I am in suburban California.

Given that the lede is couched in the lie du jour/narrative that the media is pushing; why would anyone believe their results?

Regarding candidates, I say sufficient to the day are the scandals thereof. If we elect a scandal free one, there will occur scandals in time. But Biden has his coked up jackass son who took money from Ukraine and China under VP Biden's threats of retaliation. We know this, why are we even thinking about making him the Chief? Do we think he will turn around and be honest if only he had absolute power?

Are there not enough black and white tightly edited montages of Ensign Biden being cast out of the Navy, audio tracks full of prison doors clinking? Are there not enough children in 3 sec videos with their hair sniffed? Please, spare us.

There is a very decent chance that Salvini knew MS5 and the Democrats would team up, and that was his goal all along. MS5 has now cashiered its anti-establishment credentials in teaming up with the previous governing party. We are seeing a lot of this in Europe- mainline parties that are traditionally opponents teaming up in grand coalitions to prevent anti-establishment parties from gaining ground. Italy is a bit different in that it had two fairly strong upstart parties on opposite ends of the spectrum, and I think Salvini has induced MS5 into a self-destructive coalition with the establishment. The new government will never make it even a year before falling, and Salvini hopes to be there to pick up most of the carcass of MS5 in elections before the end of 2020.

The polls kept Tulsi Gabbard out of the third debate. I'll just leave it at that.

Quote from my day in Boston today, "I ****ing hate Trump, but there's no way I'm voting for any of the democrats."

For what it's worth.

I'll say for better or worse that Tulsi Gabbard is my kind of xhe.

The only Trump bumper sticker I saw in southern California in 2016 was on a Tesla. Garlic and vampires,.

Mr Trump should learn to simply bite his tongue sometimes: but he is clever like a fox and so making pleasant noises about Giuseppe Conte now may end up helping Matteo Salvini in the end; who knows.

My limited reading in the Italian media leads me to second Yancey Ward at 8:00pm. Elections fairly soon in which the Lega (or whatever the eventual electoral party is called) garners [sic} close to a majority in the Chamber. We shall see.

Is 40% his ceiling? Or is 40% his floor?

How can anyone quote polls with a straight face after 2016?

40% Americans brave enough to be open about their support for Trump.

Shirley not virtue signal!

I got a large Trump 2020 decal on the back window of my Jeep. I drive all over Kansas City, no one fucks with me. I don't wear ball caps, but I've got a MAGA hat on the coat rack in the front office, also, a Trump portrait on the wall. I did have a Obama portrait hanging when he was President, poorer tax clients spewed hate at it when they realised their Obamacare fines ate up their refunds.
I originally was a Cruise supporter, but what shocked me during the tax season of 2016 was how many union clients supported Trump, I mean rabidly.

I wonder what the reaction will be to senior FBI officials indicted for spying, lying to the FISA Courts, and otherwise abusing surveillance.

Will the press cover it?
Will Trump use his phone (the one some people above wish he would lose) to force the press to cover the truth?

Biden at 54% against Trump?
Obama got 51.1% against Romney.
Obama got 52.9% against McCain.

54 fucking percent? Warren topping Obama, percentage-wise? Sanders too?

And Althouse commenters took 200+ comments and avoided the obvious FACT that 53% is just fucking stupid.

If I gave polls any credence, Hillary would be president, but I don't and she's not.

Time for me to watch some election night coverage of the last presidential election because my mug of liberal tears is empty. Never gets old.

Polls are of limited use. In this climate, it is highly unlikely that pollsters are reaching a truly random sample of people (assuming they want to), and it is unlikely all respondents are being truthful about their intent when the same media doing the polls is also publicly shaming Trump supporters.

The media don't like Trump and it begs belief that they would keep that dislike out of their polling when they can't keep it out of anything else they're publishing.

Much as I hope he might, Trump is not going to win Virginia. This place is blue and getting bluer every day. The number of people here in Northern VA who get a government check just keeps going up.

Someone above said that none of the other Republican candidates in 2016 could have beat Trump. I'm not sure about that. Sure, Jeb would have lost. But if Marco Rubio hadn't self destructed, he had a pretty good chance of taking enough Hispanic and suburban women votes to win.

At any rate, I agree with just about everyone here that there aren't any Trump voters from 2016 who will vote for a Democrat in 2020, but there are a lot of 2020 Trump voters among the people who either didn't vote or voted for Hillary in 2016.

bbkingfish said...

"It's a hell of a lot easier to vote for Trump in private than to tell someone you approve of him in public."

Gotta disagree here. Answering pollsters isn't very much more "public" than voting. Plus, the Trumpies I know just can't wait to get in your face about it.

However, I do agree with your underlying points...that Trump has an excellent chance of winning, and the polls at this point mean nothing.

" Want proof? How many Trump voters would wear a MAGA hat around town, or put a sticker on your car?"

All depends on where you live. If you're in deep red Trump country, the reverse is every bit as true, if not even moreso.

Good grief,
The number of attacks on Trump supporters since his candidacy far outweighs those against what, Biden 2020 hat wearers?

And you know, the latest CNN polls still show Hillary Clinton way ahead in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

Bullshit.

Most people I know don't go around assaulting Democrats over their political preferences. Most of us simply want to be left alone.

Can't say that about the thugs on the left.
