"Shooting at Madison's Shake the Lake sparks panic, 'stampede.'"

The Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Neither Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway nor Madison police chief Mike Koval would go into detail Sunday about what kinds of security were in place for Shake the Lake...

“It is entirely unacceptable that someone brought a gun to ... an event enjoyed by thousands of people, including many children,” [Rhodes-Conway] said.
Brought a gun.... Not used a gun.... That's Madison.
Rhodes-Conway used the incident to blame the Republican-controlled Legislature for its failure to pass tougher gun laws. “Our job is made more difficult by a state Legislature that advances reckless gun laws and at the same time curtails the rights of cities to take further action,” she said.

Nice deflection by herhonordamare. Fact is her city is quickly becoming a crime ridden cesspool. But denial and deflection is more fun of course.

The people doing the shooting don't give a damn about gun laws.

Why didn't the event organizers pass a rule that no one could bring a gun? Problem solved! Next time, Madison.

WHAT WE NEED, is a rule that says that people have to follow the rules! That'll fix it

I was also struck by the Mayor's phrasing. There is nothing unacceptable (except in Madison) about having a gun.

I will appreciate the irony next year when the celebration of freedom involves curtailing freedom.

Someone with a gun is more likely to save your life than take it. I bet the first thing everyone thought was "call the cops". In other words: we need someone with a gun and we need them here right now. It would be nice if they were already there.

The article is short on details but what is provided, see gilbar at 7:42, suggests the usual thug bullshit and I'm struggling to see how that is the fault of the eeeeevil Republicans.

Fernandinande said...

They're describing the incident as a "weapons offense/violation" rather than an assault or shooting. The people involved are black, which is deeply disturbing and certainly has no bearing whatsoever on the mislabeling of the event.

8) CENTRAL: Weapons Offense – 10:27 p.m.
"Following the conclusion of the Shake the Lake fireworks, there was a weapons offense that grew from a disturbance. One individual (20 year-old AAM) was shot and sustained a non-life threatening injury. It is believed the individuals involved were known to each other, and this was not a random act. The Madison Police Department does not believe there is a continuing risk to the public."

Here it's a "Weapons Violation"

I’m just spitballing here, but if draconian gun possession laws were passed and rigidly enforced, you would see the biggest disparate impact in the history of disparate impact studies.

With all due respect, mayor, what "tougher gun laws" would have prevented this incident? Specifics, please.

Jim,

I'm right there with you. You might have some survivalists in their forest compounds reacting poorly. But areas with a high amount of illegal gun ownership would see a remarkable uptick of police on civilian violence.

Fernandinande said...

The fake news is doing the suppressing, for your own protection; the "authorities" are doing the mislabeling, for their own protection.

Just read the Orwellian jargon, spin and politcal damage-control added to the police "Incident Report" at 10am the next morning (in bold).

Is it "fair to say" this addendum could be read critically as the shooting being minimized by public officials as no big deal because it was one of them who was shot, and this incident could have "easily" taken place in another neighborhood "blocks or miles away" where it'd be even less of a problem?

...While not minimizing what could have potentially been a disastrous outcome--multiple shots fired in a crowd, terror and fleeing [but wasn't that literally, precisely the actual "outcome" of the events?] -- this sanctioned event was heavily vetted with multiple entities and staffed across the board with personnel from a plethora of public and private partnerships.

Events of this magnitude are planned a full year in advance, starting with systems improvements from looking at "after incident" reviews that begin immediately after the concluded incident and strategic templates are flexibly adapted to meet emergent needs and issues right up until and through the staging of the event.

"Shake the Lake" has been a "family-friendly" venue enjoyed by thousands over several years now and it would be fair to say that the confrontation which took place last night is an anomaly, an outlier, and is not the defining narrative for this annual event.

The confrontation which occurred could have just as easily taken place blocks or miles from the venue and it is unfortunate that the reckless and dangerous behavior which resulted coincidentally transpired in the midst of a crowd of people who had just enjoyed a beautiful night of music, food, fun, and fireworks. I commend all of the protective service personnel and the site organizers, their staff and volunteers for confining the flash point and directing people to safety.

"Rhodes-Conway used the incident to blame the Republican-controlled Legislature for its failure to pass tougher gun laws."

In other words the shooter was Black. Whenever Blacks commit crimes the Republicans caused it. Presumably because the Republicans were the ones who freed the slaves and because if the Democrats had prevailed in the Civil War, then the Blacks would still be slaves and wouldn't have access to guns. Or logic to that effect. Anyway, makes sense in Madison city hall.

Indeed. Contrast it with the four current and fairly straight-forward robbery "incident" reports:

Suspect(s)
-Suspect # 1: African American Male,
-Suspect # 2: African American Male
-Victim 43-Year-Old African American Male-Madison, WI

Suspect(s)
1) Male, black, 17-18 years old, ...shorts and black hooded sweatshirt
2) Female, black, ...
Victim(s) Female, 75 years old

Suspect(s)
Male, Black, 18-24 years old, 6'0", black hooded sweatshirt
Victim(s)
Female, age 69
A brief struggle ensued and the suspect knocked the victim to the ground before taking her car keys. The suspect tried to take the victim's vehicle but could not figure out how to operate it.
(I blame public schools!)

Officers were contacted in the area of Whitney Way by an individual that was robbed and beaten. The victim reported while walking westbound on Schroeder Rd at Kessel Court he was approached from behind by an unknown individual described as black male, 30's, 6ft 4 inches with short black hair, a goatee and a gap between his two from teeth.

a weapons offense is carrying, or accidental discharge. The Police said, "It is believed the individuals involved were known to each other, and this was not a random act."

which makes it ADW in my mind. Or attempted murder, depending on your Penal Code

I have no doubt that is was a black shooter since there is no description of the shooter or the victim.

That’s your problem. You brought a black to a public event. Mayhem always ensues.

They need some “Black Control Laws.”

Cities have rights? What are they? This is something I was unaware of. What document defines them? What if a cities' "rights" are in conflict with a citizen's preexisting rights recognized by the Constitution? Who has the greater right, the citizen or the amorphous city?

Every time a gun is used illegally it is like a dog whistle to the left wing lunatics that we need more gun laws. The idea seems to be that this time the new laws will be obeyed. Suuuuurrrre.

Some of them fantasize about gun confiscation. Prohibiting alcohol didn't work, and I am reasonably certain that the same people who want to prohibit private gun ownership themselves ignored laws prohibiting marijuana and cocaine. But this time it will be different.

Yup.

I think you missed one:

"multiple shots fired in a crowd"

Odd syntax, normally you would say "shots fired INTO a crowd", that's the usual boilerplate you get. But they chose to say "shots fired IN a crowd", I believe it was intentional, to convey that shots were fired INTO a crowd of bystanders, like a terrorist attack, when that's not really what happened.

You read "fired IN a crowd" but come away as if you had read "fired INTO a crowd". I think the author deliberately intended to deceive.

God I'm so long-winded, no coffee yet. Some please clean that paragraph up and make it concise? Thanks.

Interesting that I had to wade through a search page of Google pearl clutching hyperventilation to find the original text. So much for that "conversation" about race. You can tell he's over the target by the attempt to discredit him.

Many decades ago, I was getting some stuff from my older brother, that he had taken from our grandmother. We were at his place, a crummy apartment by the airport, in the parking lot, when there was a commotion a few yards away--a black guy came running crouched out of the next building and scrambling among the cars, and there's three or four faint-sounding pops, and then everyone is crouching as the guy's girlfriend threatens to keep shooting.

Hell, I was leaving anyway, but not before noticing that almost all the black guys around had their pistols out.
