It's the Era of That's Not Funny.

I've been saying it with my tag since November 17, 2017, but here's Drudge, noticing that John Waters has noticed it:

The Waters link goes to a June 28th piece in Vulture, which I blogged on June 28th, here. I've already quoted the relevant stuff. Asked if Trump makes him laugh, Waters said:
Never. But neither do most of the Democrat character candidates running now either. And you could argue it’s not a funny time, which is true.... There are 40 [Democrats] that are going to divide it all up. You know, the gay one I like. I’d vote for any of them, even though it would be really hard for me to vote for Elizabeth Warren who has never once said a funny thing in her entire life....
But what's this other story?! "MAD Magazine to Cease Publication." I click through to the article at comicbook.com and it begins with an update: "Details have emerged regarding the future of MAD magazine following the end of original content later this year." There's a link, and I click through to another comicbook.com piece:
MAD magazine will not be completely closing down, as previously reported -- although most of its new content will cease, and availability for the iconic humor magazine will be reduced... Rather than closing up shop, the plan at present is to continue publishing issues that will feature reprinted classic MAD pieces, wrapped with new covers art....

The venerable humor magazine, which launched in 1952 at EC Comics, relaunched in 2018.... The 2017 reorganization and subsequent 2018 reboot both struggled with finding an identity for MAD in an increasingly satire-saturated world.
So maybe it's not the Era of That's Not Funny. Maybe it's the Era of Too Much Funny.  We're told "MAD struggled to find an elusive niche," and it "doubled down on lampooning the Trump administration." But that didn't work! Too much competition, and you lose all the pro-Trump readers. But you can't do pro-Trump humor. You alienate the anti-Trump readers, and Trump himself does the pro-Trump humor so well that you have to compete with him. By the way, are conservative humor publications ever good? For example, The Babylon Bee? Always bad.

Home of the brave you bet your ass. We know. Denver loves America, as it always has and always will no matter how fake the news.

YEAH USA!

Boy these neighbors know how to celebrate!

How about this? Humor is no longer about finding laughter in our common human folly but about scoring points, of declaring the comedian is the smart one, the superior, the top, over the fools he mocks. Millennial humor won't last five years; it's already a failure at the box office and book shelf...

Althouse humor seems a bit posh for my tastes.

Babylon Bee brings a smile to my face.

The Calvinist dog was clever.

The Imperial AT-AT was another winner for my tastes.

There was an article about conservative comics, about how they have to tone it down so they don't get black listed at clubs. And the ones that do well, have found conservative gatherings pay better, than the comedy club circuit.

Roseanne Barr was banned due to her politics. I believe she represents more of the archetype Trump voter to Hollywood, and she dissed Valerie Jarret, Obama's Rasputin, oh the horror!. And her ouster did cost ABC a lot of money. And perhaps that is why their President left soon after. But, think of the virtue signalling!

Another star that got sidelined for a while, even with great ratings, was Last Man Standing with Tim Allen.

Red Dawn's redubbing was an example of how Hollywood Kowtows to the Chinese.

Richard Gere has had fewer roles due to being blacklisted by China.

James Wood and Brendan Frasure both seem to have been blacklisted for being conservatives.

Those of you who want to counter my extreme position on conservative humor.

@Althouse, it is good that you recognize that you sometimes take extreme positions. You describe yourself as neither right nor left, but I think you are fooling yourself.

My bet is that Althouse thinks Chelsea Handler and Kathy Griffin are a laff riot.

So you are a humorless Progressive?

The Babylon Bee must strike too close too many times.

It's been said that MAD stops being funny when you start to notice girls, which for me was the mid-1970s. (It took quite some time after that for them to notice me, however...)

The Bee can be hit or miss, but they often give me a good laugh. But then, as an evangelical, I'm in their target market. The Bee is best when they're skewering stupidity in the Church.

De Gustibus, I say.

But I really miss The Door (a.k.a. The Wittenberg Door" - the world's only religious satire magazine). I was a subscriber from college until age 50 when they went belly-up. Atht eheir best, they sliced like a F-ing hammer.
