July 3, 2019

It's 4th of July eve. Everybody's in their car, driving, driving, to Washington D.C.... got to see the big man's $2.5 million extravaganza.

No, I'm not going anywhere. Maybe for a walk after I decide this blog is off the ground for the morning, on a morning when I feel you guys are all off and running somewhere.

But if you're looking for conversation, I give you this tidbits:

"Julián Castro calls July 4th parade a "waste of money" meant to boost Trump's ego" (CBS):
Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro...chastised Mr. Trump's administration for reportedly diverting $2.5 million from the National Park Service to the celebration and focusing on a military procession instead of improving conditions for American veterans.

"Instead of addressing something like veteran homelessness, he's spending it on boosting his ego with a parade that's fundamentally about him," said Castro, who served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration....
"Trump's July 4 extravaganza sets a political trap" (CNN):
His latest grandiose photo op appears to be a reflection of his own vanity, obsession with crowd sizes, craving for the spotlight, penchant for military hardware and his flirtations with authoritarianism.

But from the President's perspective, he's on to a winner. Cries of outrage from Democrats and the media at Trump's hijacking of the July Fourth celebrations will not offend all Americans. For a lot of them, it may be a welcome display of the country's strength.

And by serving as the arbiter of patriotism -- as he did during the controversy over kneeling NFL players -- and as a strong commander-in-chief, Trump is also laying a political trap.
From "3 Reasons Not to Worry About Trump’s Fourth of July—and 1 Big Reason to Worry/Other presidents have celebrated the Fourth. It's hard to think of one who has less sense of what it's about" by Jeff Greenfield (Politico):
There’s also a more personal dimension to the Trumpification of the Fourth. Throughout his presidency, he has taken outsize delight in over-the-top celebrations and honors given him by foreign governments, a delight that seems to translate into bizarre foreign policies. Receive the Gold Medallion from Saudi Arabia, and you brush aside the kingdom's murder and dismemberment of an American resident. Enjoy lavish banquets in China, and the brutal crackdown on a million Uighurs goes unmentioned. Get a “beautiful letter” from Kim Jong Un and maybe North Korea can keep its nukes. (And would you really be totally shocked if Kim showed up at the White House to help Trump celebrate the Fourth?)

buwaya,

I enjoy conversing with you because you are perceptive and observant and have an outside perspective on to the USA. And you understand and appreciate Catholic religious processions.

But there is a core aspect of the American grain that you may not be picking up on, perhaps due to residing in a coastal city as an adult and missing out on that childhood experience. de Tocqueville's Democracy in America might explain some of it. Or, on the 4th, take your family outside of the city to a local 4th of July celebration. Go to the small parade and the local fireworks and a local picnic. Go to the local pancake celebration put on by Rotary or Knights of Columbus. That's where you'll see the essence of America. That's the 4th of July.

In Chicago, they used to do the downtown fireworks over the lake on the 3rd, because all of the local townships had their own celebrations on the 4th.

Robert Cook said...

"Frederick Douglass' 'What to the American slave is your Fourth of July?' speech was given in 1852. While an indictment of the Democrats'abuse of slaves, it included a defense of the country's founding documents and the founders. Douglass recognized the United States was a young country and had hope for its future. In a way it predestined Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Both their optimism was justified. Of course, both were Republicans. As Douglass later stated, 'I am a Republican, a black, dyed in the wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to any other party than the party of freedom and progress.'"

Of course, neither party today is what it was then.

yes! One year we didn't make it to the fireworks on time. Were driving on the highway round the city near O'Hare. As we drove over hills could see all the many local firework celebrations going off around the city. Happy Fourth!

"Which is my point. You are not one America.

I don't believe or see that. Most people don't spend all of the 4th in a large city. They might go into a big city for the evening fireworks, but most don't. Especially people with kids. Go to a town or even a small city to see the 4th. You can't watch it on the screen. It's always been a neighbourhood celebration.

“What’s worse than the partisanship is the central place of Trump in the celebration. The national holidays of the U.S. simply aren’t about the aggrandizement of the president, and it’s an excellent tradition that presidents typically haven’t taken part at all in the Washington Fourth of July events, much less hijacked them for their own use. It would be bad enough if Trump could be trusted to deliver a bunch of bland patriotic clichés in his planned address to the nation – even if all he did was read the Declaration of Independence – but the record is pretty clear that he isn’t capable of speaking to the nation’s democratic heritage, or in fact giving any kind of speech without his usual bluster and braggadocio. At any rate, the great leader presiding over a militaristic celebration of himself and the nation is what happens in authoritarian regimes, not in democracies.

Nations that have nothing but military hardware to brag about center their celebrations on tanks and warplanes. The U.S. traditionally celebrates what Jefferson called “the pursuit of happiness” – both the private happiness of personal enjoyment and the public happiness of a shared political culture and a tradition of civic, including political, participation. Trump doesn’t seem to understand any of that as central to the U.S. That he’s inflicting his politics on the military is dangerous; that he’s inflicting his vision of the U.S. as a military nation above all else is dangerous, too.

For those of us who appreciate the real spirit of the Fourth, the whole thing is just indescribably sad.”

If we have generals complaining about saluting the President, those generals should be fired immediately.

Of course, since Chuck is here praising anti-American stuff (hey, who is surprised?), all I can say is Go USA, and Go Trump for forcing every miserable leftist and neverTrumper to declare their open hatred for America and celebrating Independence Day. Typical 4th - Very local:

Morning: Put up a flag.
Go to a pancake breakfast or a local run or both.

Parade: Kids get small American flags to wave. Some kids march in the parade as Scouts. Some kids decorate bicycles with flag colors and ride in the parade. Candy thrown.

Picnic: Have a picnic with friends and family. Put out a flag cake, or apple/ cherry pie, or both. BBQ. Hammocks, sports outside. Adults sitting around talking while kids play in the yard or the park.

Swim: Some 4th picnics and BBQs are at lakes or pools. Some people go to the pool or the splash park or the lake to swim after the BBQ at the park.

Evening: Fireworks! Go to the local fireworks celebration at dark. (Some set off their own fireworks.)

Sleep!

I still recall my frustration when an Army ROTC recruitment event at my college featured an Apache attack helicopter, which we students could climb into and imagine flying. The ground crewman who helped me into the cockpit said to me, as he did to all who took a look, "If you can get it started, you can fly it. And it's ready to go, right now."

I climbed all over and through a decommissioned Sabre jet in my city's park growing up. I checked out the bottom hatch on a Sherman tank at an armor museum. I stood in the gun turret of the USS North Carolina and manned (well, boy-ed) a .50 cal anti-air gun at its rail every summer at the beach. I've fired guns from muskets to ARs at the range. All of this educational entertainment gave me a finer appreciation of what people did in our country's history.

If you want to get a sense of America's past, climb King's Mountain on a summer day, stand in the cornfield at Antietam, walk the path of Pickett's charge, look for the damaged buildings in Richmond that exist to this day, and visit a Civil War or WWI or WWII or Korean or Vietnam cemetery. We stand now, where others stood for us.

"Even Eisenhower was no longer a general while he was President."

Of course. My husband's grandfather was friends w/ Eisenhower and went to school w/ him.

The Capitol City will plan it's own celebration for the local citizens. If they're happy with it, they are happy with it. The 4th is a local celebration planned by citizens. It's not a screen event. It's local and participatory. It's always been that way; it'll always be that way.

The relationship citizens have with the United States is not mediated by anyone else. It's a direct connection. Just as Puritans saw their relationship to Christ so do Americans see their relationship to America. No mediation needed. That's why the 4th can be celebrated without the participation of any politicians. If the politicians want to march or speak at the parade, that's fine. But that's not the essence of the holiday.

Bilwick said...

You know, this whole dispute reminds me of the movie "American Carol" which was a moderately good take off of Christmas Carol, with the Scrooge character a send up of Micheal Moore. His big issue in the movie? Protesting the 4th of July. Also perving on girls. Amazing how prophetic that movie is in hindsight, as we have leftists right here at Althouse protesting the 4th of July and celebrating it. And of course the "MeToo" movement caught almost exclusively leftists in its righteous burning crusade.

I suppose next we'll have to watch out for ACLU zombies trying to take down plaques of the 10 commandments at courthouses.....

4W, you are correct about all the local celebrations. I do not see that as a reason not to have a national celebration.

Chicago used to have a St Patrick's Day parade downtown. Then the gays insisted on intruding politics. You know what ?

The remnant of Chicago Irish now have their own parade on Western Avenue as most of those still in the city have moved south and west.

The national celebration didn't used to be political. I remember big celebrations almost as big as the 1976 one.

What has happened is the Vietnam War has poisoned US politics, just it poisoned academia when leftist draft avoiders stayed in grad school to avoid the draft. Lots of them ended up professors and favored more leftist grad students.

Plus the draft ended and that destroyed a common experience among American men. It was a terrible error of Johnson, one of many he made, to fight that war with draftees.

Celebrating the 4th of July by showing the military might and prowess of the United States is entirely appropriate. Our history is Military.

Speaking as a descendant of Revolutionary War ancestors....We fought the British, one of the premiere military powers of the time. And kicked their asses. We did it through the military that was cobbled together with volunteers. Most of whom were using their own weapons. (Hence the Second Amendment)

My mother’s paternal line had a captain in the CT militia (my mother was a DAR member), and my father’s served in a VA unit during the Revolutionary War.

I have commented here before that my grandfather grew up with the Civil War historian Bruce Catton in Benzonia, MI, who wrote in his autobiography “Waiting for the Morning Train” that he was inspired to his life’s work by watching GAR vets, including my GG grandfather (grandson of that CT militia vet) march, including, specifically, on the 4th of July. That grandfather, similarly inspired by the veterans marching, got a battlefield commission during WW I, and ended up retiring from the Army as a Colonel, in 1947, after serving on a Nazi War Crimes Tribunal.

My point is that martial displays on the 4th of July are not the least bit new, but have been a routine part of American life since at least the end of the Civil War.

I'll try not to weep with envy into my scotch this afternoon while enjoying the view from our deck and of the river below. Plus the wide open expanses of pastoral beauty. A view that is unmarred by delusional liberals too, I might add :-)

This is bullshit. I have denounced and disassociated myself from the Antifa several times (mostly because you and others, particularly Michael K, continually accuse me and others of not denouncing left wing violence). Apparently, your memories suck because I have to denounce it so many times.

Of course when there is violence on the right (and rightists have killed a lot more people than the Antifa or the idiot who shot at Scalise), you deny that the perpatrator was a conservative.

My disparaging Trump “voters” doesn’t seem so likely since I was a 2016 Trump voter. My disparagement and sarcasm is aimed at Trump fans. I can’t fault anyone who voted for Trump as a least-worst alternative since that is exactly what I did in November, 2016. I voted for the Republican nominee like I always do.

I’m just mad that it was such a shitty choice. I’m angry at the primary voters who made Trump the nominee. And I am contemptuous of the people who are now fulfilling Trump’s own sarcastic insult that he could shoot somebody in the middle of Fifth Avenue and his base of supporters would still vote for him.

I am looking for any and every way to not be a Trump voter ever again.

Do I regret my vote? No. We got Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. The he one campaign promise that Trump fulfilled, with the absolute least credit to him.

What difference does this make even if it were genuine rather than insincere and made only to defend against criticism as you admit? Many antifa leaders and members are known but keep their jobs in education and media. Meanwhile non-leftists are fired for voicing mainstream opinions Damore, Williamson, Eich. In fact the left has gotten journalists investigating antifa which means it's riskier to your employment to oppose antifa than it is to be antifa. The left has controlled each of these outcomes and the process functions exactly as the left desires regardless of whether some fraction of the left opposes it.

Bullshit. If you don't believe me will you believe the ADL? Just this week the Charlottesville killer was sentenced to life in prison. We also had church burnings in Louisiana this year and Mosque attacks in 44 states since 2005 (as well as an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin where the attacker apparently didn't know the difference between Sikhs and Muslims).

To bring together armaments and history, and who can own what: in about 1994 or so the Miss'ippi National Guard had a family day at Camp McCain (no relation to the sailors AFAIK) that included live fire demos by modern and WABAWTS ordnance.

The SP howitzer was great, but the real show for me and my friends was the civil war pieces.

There was a mixed battery of smooth and rifled guns, which fired different ammo at various targets. They probably shot off several score rounds, and the most memorable part was the shot tearing through the scrubby pine and brush downrange--eerie howly clangy noises that went on much longer than I expected in some cases.

Tomorrow we do nothing we wouldn't do on any Fourth, and maybe less since I am in a post-op state. Well enough to put the flag out, and well enough to eat some BBQ, and well enough to wish you all well.

Oh those elitist Quakers!

“Lemon Meringue Fun Facts. Lemon meringue pie is a type of baked pie, made with a crust usually made of shortcrust or shortbread pastry, lemon curd filling and a fluffy meringue topping. Also it is prepared with a bottom pie crust. The meringue is placed directly on top of the lemon filling. No upper crust is used.

“The Quakers generally receive credit for inventing lemon custard in the late 1700s. Philadelphian Elizabeth Coane Goodfellow, a pastry chef, businesswoman, and cooking school founder, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1806, expanded on lemon custard and invented lemon meringue pie.

August 15th is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day.

Lemon trees bloom and produce fruit year-round. Each tree can produce between 500 and 600 pounds of lemons in a year.
Add the juice of one lemon to an equal amount of hot water for an anti-bacterial gargle.

Food historians say lemons have been in cultivation around the Mediterranean from as early as the first century A.D.
High in vitamin C, lemons prevent scurvy, a disease that causes bleeding gums, loose teeth and aching joints. To this day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor can have one ounce of juice a day.

California and Arizona produce 95% of the entire U.S. lemon crop.”

Remember, on one of the many many occasions where lefty Chuck let the mask slip he literally defined republican electoral victories as "disasters".

And he has done nothing for 3 years so much as insult every Trump voter over and over again.
