"The king of Thailand has married the deputy head of his personal security detail, and given her the title of queen..."

"King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 66....  has been married and divorced three times before and has seven children. A royal statement said: King Vajiralongkorn 'has decided to promote General Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayudhya, his royal consort, to become Queen Suthida and she will hold royal title and status as part of the royal family.'... In 2014 Vajiralongkorn appointed Suthida Tidjai, a former flight attendant for Thai Airways, as the deputy commander of his bodyguard unit. He made her a full general in the army in December 2016."

BBC reports.

From stewardess to general to queen! That's a heck of a career path.

Women like that stuff. The King of Thailand is revered, but it might have been the previous one. Anyway he stayed out of politics and tried to reconcile everybody who was squabbling about the issues of the day.

If by "like" you mean the way people like to see suffering in human beings they're in danger of envying.

I meant women like powerful men. As far as I know the current king isn't a tyrant about it.

Anna didn't become queen. She kept a young girl from becoming another concubine.

Lèse majesté is illegal in Thailand, but it must be a difficult transition in that country from the beloved, long ruling king to his more or less wayward son. The king stayed out of the squabbles to an extent, but I wouldn't say the previous king stayed out of politics exactly: with the govt turmoil of the last nearly two decades, and especially since 2014, he was a significant force of stability. The new king has already involved himself in politics more aggressively than his father, getting into a little squabble with the militar junta a couple of years ago.

I imagine making his consort a full general was part of his squabble with the military junta.

The woman looks so unhappy in that photograph. I don't find the king appealing at all. I don't think the story of her ascension is nice at all.

It's good to be king, and even better to be king by divine right. From what I've read, though, many of them have unhappy and thwarted lives. You would think that kings, pornstars, and celebrity chefs would be content with their station in life, but so many of them come to bad ends.

Mary Beth corrected me, saying ...Anna didn't become queen
Oops! believe it not, i've NEVER seen it :)
Thanx for straightening me out!

He does not seem like a nice man. And being his wife is a bit dangerous, both because he has a wandering eye and because of what he's done in the past to former wives and their families (and his own children).

Caligula made his horse a senator. If he really was a god he would have made a senator into a horse.

Probably a sound move on his part. Better a queen than head of his personal security, especially if he has a roving eye..

Isn't the King of Siam supposed to be bald?

The photograph of the new queen prostrate and raising her hand in supplication to the king-- even with it obvious that the entire court present was also doing the ceremonial prostration-- must have incited several dozen fits of apoplexy in the feminist activist camp.

A bit like Melania Trump. I get the why, but some of these accessions must be a bit mind-blowing to the women involved. It may not be all beer and skittles but, fuck, the stories you'll be able to tell!

We've been to the old Thai Palace, where there's a covered walkway so the King could go visit his harem without anyone seeing. Ah, those were the days when being a King meant something.
