Oak Park and River Forest High School will spend $53,794 to redo its yearbook because 18 students made the "OK" hand sign.

Newsweek reports.
“I want to be clear that we are not making any presumptions about students’ intent in using the gesture,” [Superintendent Joylynn] Pruitt-Adams wrote. “Regardless of intent, however, there is a real and negative impact. Many students, not only our students of color, experience this gesture as a symbol of white supremacy. Potentially subjecting our students to this trauma is simply not acceptable.

“We are concerned that the gesture will become more closely associated with White supremacy in the future. Publishing the photos in question could not only harm students today but could subject students to potentially a lifetime of questions or penalty from colleges, employers, etc.”

As reported by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the OK hand gesture being linked to white supremacy started as a trolling campaign by users on the controversial message board 4Chan. The “Operation O-KKK” campaign was launched to trick people into thinking the gesture—frequently used by President Donald Trump during his public speaking—was meant to promote white supremacy as the fingers spell out WP (white power).

"The 'OK' symbol hoax was so widespread in the spring and summer of 2017 that a number of people on the far right began deliberately to use the gesture—typically making the sign while posing for photographs uploaded to social media—in order to continue the trolling and spread it further,” noted the ADL....
Pruitt-Adams sounds completely lucid. The effect on the observer matters — OK may be experienced as a white power statement — and the students doing the gesturing — even if they just meant "okay" — could find their reputations damaged in the future. And yet the "OK" sign and the great American word "OK" ("okay") are a damned important part of our speech. And if we reject it now, then, going forward, all those past images of simple positivity will become confusing and subject to misinterpretation. And it seems this big, artificial move — changing an important part of our expression — is all about destroying Donald Trump. But nothing destroys Donald Trump! All efforts at destroying him destroy something else! Stop being do damned destructive... OK?

The only people who can buck this Red Guard moment are those with nothing to lose.

People misunderstand the circumstances of mockery.

Kids mocked the zeitgeist back in the day (see Mad magazine, etc.), because there was no cost in doing so.
There were no consequences. The butts of the jokes took the jokes.
You could make careers of it, businesses, like Mad magazine.

That’s no longer true. There are lifelong consequences for everything, potentially anything, that turns into a socio-cultural issue.
Imagine being condemned to a second-class existence, ten years later, for a bit of innocent fun at fifteen.

"On consideration, the administrator made the right call. "

The right call would be to have no yearbook at all. There's no telling what sign or signal may in the future be considered so horrendous that it can make an innocent person worse than a monstrous criminal. That's what happened to Nicholas Sandmann -- there was no crime he could be charged with, no legally sanctioned punishment for his terrible act of being, and no avenue of atonement available to him short of total self-denunciation, so the only solution for the Left was to ruin him comprehensively for the rest of his life.

It was a BETTER than leaving things as they were, but not RIGHT.

This is a cultural problem without a path to a political solution.
Not within the scope of the US political process anyway.
And the problem is the state of mind of the decision-makers that run your institutions, private even more than public, and the people in the channels to become their successors.

At a certain social status, these people are your neighbors, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, friends of your wife or children.
These are the people who purged Brendan Eich and Linus Torvalds.
The situation is difficult.

How you are going to purge those millions of powerful people I don’t know.

The problem is in your universities that are indoctrinating your entire leadership caste in a particular religion (mores et cultura). It comes from the top down, and these people, who run your institutions, also impose the consequences on those who offend or rebel.

The public schools and those who run them are downstream by some distance.

The "rock on" gesture is either white supremacist or demonic.

The "peace" gesture resembles a "v" and is secretly pro-war or in progressive times social justice.

The "ok" gesture is an inverted "PP", that is anti-abortion or pro-life. An inverted "ok" is actually pro-choice, pro-death after conception, pro-genocide after the first six weeks, and anti-women after the age of viability.

The middle finger, the longest finger, is used in some cultures in lieu of the index finger to point.

The thumbs up gesture is actually a steeple. Unclench the fingers, and inside are all of the people.

When I reflect on my teenage self (and I was a straight arrow), I realize that I would have lain awake nights trying to figure out how to get that OK sign into any school publication.

Why? Not because I was a white supremacist, but because I and every other boy I knew wanted to show how idiotic some adults were, particularly the authoritarian and officious ones.

I wonder if Althouse, who had her own run-ins with school authoritarians on the subject of (ahem) skirt length, didn't share at that age some of the live-for-today, to heck with the principal's office attitudes the the OPRF 18?

Well, it is important to save the children from future blackface Halloween costume incidents, but online vigilantes have been ridden hard and put away wet too often. They are awful. They should be ignored, but we are stuck with them.

She could not get a transfer for years because nobody wanted to go there, Finally, the SAC changed by retirement and the new one did not realize the replacement problem and let her transfer to LA.

The black gangs are starting to find the Chicago suburbs now and crime is spreading.

While that may have been trolling, shoe color has been used to denote gang membership. I was once at a bus stop in the vibrant side of town, when a black kid, an estimated 12 years old, asked me the following question. "Excuse me sir, but does your blue-colored athletic shoe mean that you are a Crip?" His respectful tone indicated that he wasn't trolling me.

We are throwing away the exceptionalism, the incredible experiment in human potential that has been The United States. "When you indulge this stupidity"

The trouble here is that it is not "you" indulging stupidity.
The mechanism here is that of a hue and cry, leading to persons in high places making decisions to institutionalize the demands of those making the hue and cry. These mainly take the form of official and semi-official sanctions, or the threat of sanctions, by private as well as public institutions.

"You" are out of this loop. You are not the leadership caste making these decisions. You do not control these institutions. You are not the gatekeepers to employment by Apple or Google or Goldman Sachs.

There was a suburbanization/building boom after WWI, but nothing like what happened after the Big One. Millions of upwardly-mobile twenty- and thirty-somethings had seen too much destruction and wanted to BUILD STUFF, not destroy it-- and where better to start than residential housing?

What they are telling me is that whites, by their very presence, trigger an inferiority complex. They way they keep going on about White This and White That is starting to make me wonder if maybe whites ARE superior.

Somalia was a wakeup call, you couldn't dismiss it or rationalize it away. Imagine if you took your friends to your great grandfather's village in Scotland or France only to find your second cousins still squatting in a mud hut trying to remember which hand to eat with and which to wipe with.

And then an entire 6 weeks in America was dedicated as Euro History Month where they belabored the point that Liam O'Conner's invention of fishing reels rivaled splitting the atom.

You would be insecure too.

The dark side of this is that getting Whites to identify tribally is a really bad idea. There is a story, I don't know how true, of a young Black Panther recruit getting impatient with the movement and cornering one of the elder members:

"Why don't we just pick up a rifle and go to war against the whites?"

My own studies pretty much confirm his judgement

I think people commenting here simply don’t understand the degree of poison in this culture. Something like this will be used against these teenagers, it can ruin their lives.

Why aren't we ruining the lives of the instigators? The SJW that got a Harvard Dean fired for representing Harvey Weinstein in court has now set her sites on The Harvard Lampoon. Why is she not a pariah?

Conservatives continue to play a Prevent Defense for 4 quarters and congratulate themselves for only losing 3-0. For 16 games straight. Then they trade their 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the promise of future negotiations.

I'm getting sick of all the outrage porn clickbait. Madison Ave is destroying the country. Even the right-wing sites are dipping from the honey pot. Talk talk talk. Either pick up a rifle or STFU.

Speaking of Honey Pots, Amazon has a lovely collection starting at just $19.99. Remember to use the Althouse Amazon Portal for all your shopping needs!

I'm just not that into physical contact

I understand completely. And where I was raised there are limits. For example, it's considered rude to extend your hand out for a handshake with a woman.

I'm curious though, how do you brush them off?

Fen: awkwardly. I'm actually a pretty big, gregarious, and apparently "huggable" fellow, but it gets old.

I'm a big fan of sexual contact, to be sure, but behind closed doors
