"Is Kirsten Gillibrand right that she's more open to changing her mind than Trump?"

John asks, after watching her CNN forum, where she claimed to be "able to admit when you're wrong and ... to grow and learn and listen and be better and be stronger," which "is something that Donald Trump is unwilling to do."

John writes:
So, Gillibrand says she's changed her mind again and again, while Trump is unwilling to change his mind. But wait — by her own account, she changed her mind because her job changed from representing a relatively conservative district in upstate New York to representing the whole state, which is more liberal.

Well, Trump has also changed his views. He used to be pro-choice. Trump admitted in 2015: "At one point, I was a Democrat. As Ronald Reagan changed, I also changed. I became much more conservative. I also became a Republican."

In 1999, Trump said he wouldn't want to ban "partial-birth abortion": "I'm very pro-choice. . . . I am pro-choice in every respect."

Trump said in 2004: "In many cases, I probably identify more as a Democrat. . . . It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than under the Republicans." As you can see in that video, he said in another video (I'm not sure when) that he was "liberal on health care."
John observes that both Gillibrand and Trump have changed their minds and it seems as though in both cases, it was to suit their political ambition. I agree. It's just politics, not some aspiration — as Gillibrand insipidly put — to "be better and be stronger."

"Be better" reminds me of the Melania Trump slogan "Be best," which I see she was accused to stealing from Michelle Obama, who said "Be better." So Gillibrand uses the Democratic version of the maddeningly generic exhortation.

Dunno. Why would anyone think that Donald Trump refuses to change his mind? To me he seems to follow Scott Adams' description that he "pushes on every door". If it works, good. If not, try something else. Constantly changing his mind.
Is this just an example of Trump = every negative thing?

Anyhow, isn't the common liberal meme that Trump agrees with whomever talked to him last?

When your "principles" are fluid, changing your mind is part of the racket.

Having a principle is akin to having a North Star (a Pole Star; a Polaris) from which you draw guidance.

Trump actually does have a set of principles.

So, yeah, change your mind a thousand times, back and forth, you go for it, girl!

Since she comes from Upstate NY and positioned herself as a moderate, any mind-changing will likely come from a position of sanity to left-wing box-checking.

Trump is a pragmatist. He is not an ideologue.

Different things are important to him.

I find myself agreeing with his list of things. They are just more important.

Right now the only thing that matters is cleaning up the traitorous cabal that spied on the political opponent of Hillary Clinton including the man who was most central in weaponizing the federal government against it’s citizens.

Wow, that's quite a list. What's Trump's?

- Renegotiate trade deals to keep jobs from going overseas
- Denuclearize North Korea
- Reinvigorate the economy by removing barriers to investment
- Keep rapists and drugs out of the country

Hmmmm. Kristen's list looks pretty air-filled in comparison.

It's not as much as she changed her views, it's that she changed her views instantly and utterly at the moment when it suited her. As much as I believe in such things as instant conversion when there is some sudden epiphany, that's not what happened here. She's essentially admitted she is a rank opportunist who will tell you whatever you want her to believe. Her positions are 100% negotiable. She is completely phony and proud of it. This actually may be fine for the Democratic primary voters who seem to like ciphers, but it does reflect a person of very poor character.

As for Trump, it has never struck me that he has strong principles either, which is why I was very hesitant about him before the election. Honestly, I'd rather have someone else, but at the moment there is no one else. I cannot spare this man: he fights.

Trump has renegotiated two trade deals. One with S. Korea and the new NAFTA. Neither was a significant change to the status quo. Especially after he called NAFTA "the worst deal ever", I don't know how anyone who believes this could call the new deal anything but an abject failure.

North Korea has not denuclearized and negotiations have stalled.

The economy is doing well but appears to be slowing.

He hasn't kept drugs or "rapists" out of the country. In fact in March 100,000 people entered illegally and April looks to be worse. And by diverting customs agents to processing asylum claims, he is making it easier, not harder to smuggle drugs from Mexico.

Aside from admitting it when you are wrong, which is a routine adult behavior, these others are meaningless virtue signalling tropes.

One of Hillary's big mistakes, especially vs Trump, was to come up with a clear and articulate description of why she was running for the office of POTUS. Gillibrand is headed down the same road - as are Harris and all the others.

Back when liberals were open-minded, the joke was that some were so open minded that they did not know how to argue their own side in a debate.

Now the Left doesn't try to argue. They just accuses the other sides of racism, White nationalism, sexism, xenophobia, transphobia, cultism and lack of elite credentials (you know, the Deplorables).

They still do not know how to argue their own side in a debate. Journolists and DNC officials get together on talking points so that people like Inga know what to cut and paste.

It is a sad decline of civilization that we are witnessing.

"One of Hillary's big mistakes, especially vs Trump, was to come up with a clear and articulate description of why she was running for the office of POTUS. ..."

Whatever, the real reason is, she, like all other candidates, is power hungry and greedy. Whatever she wants to do is to benefit herself first.

Trump, however, does not lie about his ambition.

Hence, we are amused when the Fake Media breathlessly accuse Trump of lying. Every politician lies, the Fake Media lie.

It's a fair point that John Althouse Cohen makes.

Of course it is one thing to have an ideology, with changing views on issues as different evidence arises.

It is another thing altogether, to have no ideology at all, and to base your changing views on the swings of popular culture and popular media.

I still think that one of the most revealing little tidbits about Trump was the subject that led reporter Michelle Fields to try to ask Trump a question after one of his most notorious pressers in Florida. It was the occasion on which she was grabbed by Cory Lewandowski, leading to another kerfuffle.

The question that Michelle Fields wanted to ask Trump was about Trump's oddly uninformed comments following the Supreme Court oral arguments in Fisher v University of Texas. Lets's set it up in reverse order, last thing first:

In his reaction to the story, Trump criticized Justice Scalia:

https://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/263074-trump-scalia-affirmative-action

And that was what Fields wanted to ask Trump about when she was grabbed and stopped. It was going to be a really good question, asking Trump why he had criticized Scalia.

What seems to have swayed Trump, was Trump's getting his information from mainstream media. For an example, here is this LA Times report on the Scalia questions in oral argument (which ironically include a reference to Trump, who actually -- later -- criticized the Scalia comments):

https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-scalia-race-20151210-story.html

But if Trump had been smart and informed about conservative judicial philosophy -- and he obviously isn't -- Trump would have known this:

https://fedsoc.org/commentary/blog-posts/justice-scalia-and-mismatch

And therefore, Trump wouldn't have been in the weirdly stupid position of criticizing Scalia (as if Trump knew better), whom Trump would later praise effusively when it came time for him to nominate SCOTUS justices himself.

My question to all the Dems in 2020 is this: if Kim Jong Un started lobbing missiles over Japan again, what are you going to do?

Because I don't see a cogent answer coming out of any of them.

All this, "What are your priorities?", "Should rich people be taxed more?", "Does white privilege exist?" and "How are you different than Trump" is the typical softball questioning from a warm and embracing media.

But now through his tax releases, we know this previously hidden fact, that he is a millionaire himself, about him. Will he change his mind about millionaires and billionaires? Are they policy failures? Or will it turn out that socialist leaders can be rich in a, shall I say, in a PURE way?
