Why do we even know or care about George Conway? Well, because his wife works for Trump, and he likes to pop off publically against Trump. But Trump pops back.

I think Trump has decided that Kellyanne's husband's actions have made her position with the administration untenable, and George will take the fall when she leaves.

Is a wife supposed to work for a man who clearly, publicly disrespects her husband? No. (The same rule would apply if the roles were reversed because primary loyalty must always go to your spouse.) If Kellyanne stays, George is humiliated subject to repeated taunting by Trump whenever he opens his yap that that she chose Trump over him. If she goes, Trump has framed it so that George will be blamed for sabotaging his more successful wife -- again humiliating George.

One of the things I really hate in our modern media landscape is when commenters ascribe emotional reactions to public figures without really solid evidence of their feelings or reasons. This happens with Trump a lot - how often do you see a headline stating “Trump rages” about something, where all he did was crack a (as Althouse frequently points out, often very funny) joke about it?

I don’t know if that’s happrning here, but I’m skeptical that Mr. Conway is really so consumed with jealousy as portrayed. I’ve certainly seen no evidence of this, and the implication (that a man can’t handle a successful wife) is quite sexist.

A year and half ago a friend of my gf's ended up coming back to the Midwest from D.C. because, in her words, "his opportunities for advancement within the dept. had dried up and the dept. itself was shrinking."

He eventually found a job in the private sector but it's gotten me thinking...how much of all this animosity towards Trump (from both sides) is the fact that his unexpected election basically queered the job opps of an entire - and massive - cohort of professionals of all levels around the country?

Libs and Dems were expecting a huge windfall of promotions and increased bureaucratic positions nationwide under Hillary. A lot of people purported to have angled for jobs in Trump's admin (and are now actively working against him like Cohen et. al.) would have also been just as likely to serve the anointed Dowager Empress of Chappaqua.

End of the day, all these people really care about is continuing the their-hand-in-your-pocket-to-their-mouth bureaucratic lifestyle, and big doody-head Trump messed that all up for them, the big meanie!!! Now I have to go home to Litchfield!!!

What's up with all those people tweeting at Trump's feed. Twitter is a cesspool of wasted time, and emotion. We really need to care less about politics, but I guess that's only a conservative/libertarian view. I feel bad for some people who are so consumed with hatred of a guy who simply, in a very short time, has made their lives demonstrably better, and by some measures better than ever. What do they want, less jobs, lower wages, higher taxes, more human trafficking, more women raped trying to get here?

He still has a pretty sharp pants crease compared to Hillary, so what's the beef?

In the podcast Scott Adams talks about this and says:

1) What is PDJT supposed to do, let Conway attack him ("Trump is mentally unfit!") and stay quiet?

2) Fire KellyAnne Conway because of her Husband?

No to both in my opinion. KellyAnne is apparently doing a fine job for PDJT.

Scott also supposes that President Trump cleared the attack with KellyAnne first. "Hey, I've got to hit back at your husband. Here's what I'm going to say. If this gives you a sad, then you'll have to get him to shut up. I go after anyone who goes after me.

As much as I support Trump, the guy has got to learn when to stop with the incessant tweeting. George Conway maybe a brilliant lawyer but as a husband he is an ass. Is Trump right with respects to his remarks about Conway's jealousy of his wife? Yes. Does Trump need to add to her personal problems? No. George Conway is beclowning himself and Trump should just step aside without comment.
Same with McCain. Tweet the facts without the commentary and let it go. The facts speak for themselves.

Chuck said...

This is an outrageous story and I cannot believe that Adams is wading into it. Trump's campaign manager popped off about how Trump had never met George Conway and the next day Conway was doing his newspaper interview about how many times he had met Trump, replete with his personal letters from Trump dating back more than 10 years.

Does Scott Adams care abut facts, or is he completely lost in the world of Twitter insults?

And oh by the way; George Conway is about a hundred times better at Twitter insults than Trump or Adams or Brad Parscale.

I don't find Conway's insults entertaining or witty; he has merely trotted out the old Narcissistic Personality Disorder thing again, and last fall was organizing conservative lawyers against Trump.

The man seems in some way to be eaten up with rage, and gives a very strange reason for attacking Trump (to spare Kellyanne from his--George's--attacking her). His tweets are so bitter I'm surprised she goes home at all, but she has four kids to raise so she has to.

As to whether Conway wanted a job with the Trump admin (he says no, Parscale says yes), I have no idea, but he didn't look thrilled standing around at the inaugural balls holding Kellyanne's wrap while Trump was kissing her hand.

As one of the respondents on Twitter pointed out, Trump is incorrect here. Trump didn't turn George Conway down for a DOJ job. Conway announced that he wasn't interested in a DOJ post at that time.

That isn't so clear from that Politico piece. No formal nomination had occurred, and he withdrew himself from consideration. It could have been that he got tired of waiting, or got a sense that the offer wasn't coming.

It's also notable in that article that he expressed strong support for Trump at the time. So something happened (sour grapes?) that made him turn against Trump.

James K said...

Get a grip, Chuck. The tweet Adams quotes is Trump's, who says he "barely know[s]" Conway. Trump has met and corresponded with thousands of people over the years, I'm sure many of whom he does not know well. And even if it's a bit of hyperbole, so what? That's "outrageous"?

I don't know how ANY two people can possibly stay married or in a relationship when one of the pair is publicly undermining the other's ability to be a success.

George by constantly making slanderous accusations about his wife's boss in public is doing nothing but making her ability to do her job difficult if not impossible. They can disagree and argue in private, but what he is doing is bringing their rift public and virtually slapping her in the face.

Why would someone do this to their spouse? Lots of reasons and none of them very good. The lack of respect for his wife is appalling.

Yes. George can hate Trump. That is his right Does he also hate his wife? It seems like it.

Why they’re still married is a mystery. Who knows maybe Kellyanne was that anonymous anti Trump op-Ed writer who said they were staying only out of a patriotic motive. Why Trump keeps Kellyanne on is strange too, maybe he likes causing trouble in others’ marriages, as has been rumored. It’s anyone’s guess as to what is really happening.

“In pursuing a friend’s wife,” Wolff wrote, “he would try to persuade the wife that her husband was perhaps not what she thought. Then he’d have his secretary ask the friend into his office; once the friend arrived, Trump would engage in what was, for him, more or less constant sexual banter.

“‘Do you still like having sex with your wife? How often? You must have had a better f*** than your wife? Tell me about it. I have girls coming in from Los Angeles at three o’clock. We can go upstairs and have a great time. I promise ...’

“All the while, Trump would have his friend’s wife on the speakerphone, listening in.”

The Eighth Airforce would lose 33% of the B-17's to interceptors and 3,000 men in a mission over Germany when they were not using Fighter Escorts but relied on their own formations and guns. Then the American geniuses overruled the Dogma and added drop tanks to the new P-51s and that turned things around. Soon German Luftwaffe ran out of living fighter pilots. And it was just in time for D-Day.

Trump is the American Genius turning things around today. Lesser men just accuse Trump of narcissism because he wins battles they only lose.

FTR: Narcissism is not someone publicly running a strategy game in which he is the winner. It is a very mean minded controlling force being exercised over a small group of people that the narcissist demands play small roles in his self image game. If one refuses to play a small role, then he throws them away.

That necessarily results in control by fear that can only work in small groups and which builds up a bad reputation as people leave. But Trump has made and still has many thousands of friends and still has close family members supporting him. And he especially values the smart women. That makes him into a genius and not a narcissist.

In a healthy marriage, one is loyal to the spouse before the job.

I find the spectacle cringe-worthy. No one knows what goes on in someone else's marriage. We do know this: they have children. The father is contemptuous of his wife's boss. He says so in public. The boss has has insulted the wife's husband. The children can read all of it. Yuck.

Hypothetically, I would suggest marriage partners agree on major decisions. I do not think it's a good idea for a husband or wife to hold contempt for the job of their spouse. Nor is it healthy, for the long term health of marriage, for the boss to insult one of the spouses. My advice for marital health: Do not accept a job held in contempt by your spouse. If your spouse hates your boss, and insults him in public, for the sake of your marriage, you might want a good job. Or, you might choose your job over your marriage, if you're ok with dumping your husband for your career. Strongly suggest your look for a new job if your boss insults your spouse.

Chuck @ 2:49 PM: From what I've seen you're absolutely right on this point.

OTOH, trying to get the last word in a dispute with Trump is a futile exercise. The old cautionary tale about wrestling pigs comes to mind.

But on yet another hand, Trump, for all his evident, ridiculous, embarrassing faults, at least seems to be looking out for the interests of Americans, as opposed to our enemies. Such as like his predecessor, the smirking Marxist puke mediocrity Obama, he of the magically protective tan.

Yes, that's an argument in the "but what about" style, but please note that I have not disagreed with the substance of your post, rather its emphasis on what I consider a relatively trivial foible. He seems, just by instinct, to get much of the big stuff right.

Who do you want? Reagan? Jefferson? Still irretrievably dead. We have to go with the President we have. If the international cocktail party circuit and lefty cool kids don't like him, tough noogies, I say.

My point is that Trump's uncouth manner infuriates many people. This makes sense, because Americans are (in the main, outside of the political class) very polite and accommodating people. Someone with better manners would ignore George, let him have the last word, and move on. But that's not Trump's style.

The job of the Presidency is to faithfully see to the execution of the People's laws, and to preserve the Constitution. It is my opinion that, for all his faults, Trump is doing a better job at that than any president since Reagan. If you want an inspiring personal icon, vote Democrat.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Isn’t George Conway a Republican and a conservative?

That is rather beside the point....irrelevant.

The issue is that Kellyanne's husband is going out of his way to actively destroy his wife's career. By insulting her boss....not just some guy...but he BOSS, he is making her look bad and putting her in a very awkward and difficult position.

It would be the same dynamic if she were working in a restaurant as a waitress and he came in and loudly insulted the boss and told everyone the food was rotten. He is shaming her, embarrassing her and denigrating what she is doing.

Why he is doing this is speculative. (I have my guesses) The fact is that he IS acting in a way detrimental to his wife's current and FUTURE career prospects. Selfish and purposely harmful to his wife.

Birkel said...

Remember when courteous country club Republicans like HW Bush and W Bush let other people consistently get the last word? Well that gave us two liberal Justices, President Clinton, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Reid.

Those two pansy assed big government Republicans never found a hill to die on. They surrendered every domestic policy if Democrats objected. And Democrats were smart enough not to object when big government Republicans created massive bureaucracies.

Meanwhile, Trump has reduced federal employees. He has engineered a reduction in legislation. He has resisted foreign entanglements more than any recent president. And he has overseen 3.1% GDP growth for the last year. Trump repudiates all the self-anointed elites and they hate him for it. Screw those big government non-conservative Republicans.

Conway shouldn't have started the tweeting. This tweeting is some of the most advanced forms of passive aggressive marital arguing I've seen. It's stunning. In an ideal world, husbands and wives should talk out disagreements privately. Hopefully, the spouse is supportive. But, if he could not be convinced to support the job--- a career is less important then a marriage. After talking, if it's clear the husband is not OK with the situation, for the health of the marriage she could have quietly resigned.

Now, of course, it's too late for this couple to act in a mature way. Her boss has said: “I barely know him but just take a look, a stone cold LOSER & husband from hell!” & the wife supports that statement. "Husband from hell?" Is this couple play-acting? Are they the most passive-aggressive couple I've seen in my life? I don't know, but it sure is bizarre. For a normal marriage, I'd predict that a a wife cannot support that sort of statement from anyone and expect the marriage to survive. Maybe it's a theatre performance? Perhaps the marriage has, over the long term, been passive-aggression central?

If these jokers didn't have kids, it would be more psychologically interesting, and less cringe-worthy.

"I just want to lay it on the line, that the country deserves better, the McCain family deserves better, I don’t care if he’s president of United States, owns all the real estate in New York, or is building the greatest immigration system in the world. Nothing is more important than the integrity of the country and those who fought and risked their lives for all of us.”

Kellyanne is a Catholic in a marriage with four children. That's something not easy to break up. She'a a prolife voice in the White House, I suppose that's why people work on her husband to get him to undercut her by attacking Trump. But George Conway is a good conservative also. It isn't a Hollywood simple situation.

"I'm curious as to why you think that Kellyanne should resign from her career because she and her husband disagree? Why her? Why does she have to fold and quietly fade away away?"

oh, I agree entirely there is nothing "healthy" going on here. Conway's tweets were a betrayal of his wife. At this point, the situation is FUBAR'ed and I cannot see a good marital solution. She is damaged by her husband's tweets. Her family and children are humiliated in public. Their father is named a "cuck" in public by her boss. How does she forgive her husband? (Betrayal on Conway's part.) How does she remain in a job where the boss publicly humiliates the father of her children? There is no good marital solution at this point.

BEFORE her husband began to tweet, they should have sat down and talked. He should have voiced his concerns. She should have listened to his concerns, and gave her comments on the advantages of the job. A spouse should not reject concern and go on one's merry way.

Hypothetically, in any marriage, after talking it through -- I believe a spouse should find another job if the husband or wife is not comfortable with the job or boss. Why? A job is just a job, but a marriage is forever and eternal. It's wrong to divide family loyalties, and denigrate the unity of the family. This marriage has children, and their emotional best interest should be kept in mind. Staying in a job, despite the spouse's objections, is not a recipe for a healthy marriage and family life.

Perhaps if the family was in a economic crisis, it's a justification to stay in the job despite the spouse's disagreement. But jobs, even extraordinary jobs, are, in the end, just a job. Marital spouse takes priority, in every case. The unity and protection of the family takes priority. (And, if not, why would he/she be married to that person? If one doesn't value the counsel of the spouse, why does the marriage exist?) There's a lot of other worthy things to do in life. More important to protect the marriage then work at a specific job for 4 or 8 years.

But all of this applies to a real marriage. Perhaps Conway wants to live separately from her husband, or perhaps the marriage is in name name only? Or maybe they are a dysfunctional couple who fights passive-aggressively & the kids ignore it? I don't know but it sure is weird.

Kellyanne Conway is the first female campaign manager to win at the Presidential level.

Naturally, all the, like, totally woke, totally, lefties/LLR's, but I repeat myself, recommend she should quit.

I’m surprised it took Trump this long to respond...

Yes. McCain was a liar and an open border enthusiast going back decades. He had, at one time, a Mexican national as his advisor on immigration. Then, come re-election time, he switched scripts and promised to vote for the fence and to repeal Obamacare. He never meant it and, once re-elected, he went right back to his own plans. Kelli Ward gave him a hard time in the primary so he lied extra hard.

The dossier was just the latest in his back stabbing, Trump was goaded into his comment on "I like heroes who weren't captured." Watch the video. It would have been better if he had kept his mouth shut but that is who he is.

I don't know why Conway picked this fight but he did. Maybe he was angry about moving to DC.

It sure is. I would either divorce him or he her. That marriage isn’t worth saving unless one or both of them removed themselves from the situation. And he being humiliated by her boss and she not defending him but siding with the man who is humiliating her husband and the father of her children, cannot be good for their children to witness. An ugly and toxic situation.

George's wife is working for a virile, charismatic, good humored, gentle ,energetic blue eyed blonde Adonis, leader of the free world who has permission from his gorgeous wife to pleasure Playboy models and porn stars with his mushroom headed weapon.

How must Boy George feel when as he rolls out of bed and shuffles into the bathroom to be greeted by his sad reflection in the mirror?

No doubt each time he feels the need to attack tweet Trump, it is preceded by a failure to perform his husbandly duty. Sad!

I have never, ever heard anyone claim that Trump was "goaded" into the asinine and obscene joke about preferring people who weren't captured. Trump wasn't goaded into it and unlike a lot of Trump's off the cuff stupidities, that one was practiced and intentional on Trump's part.

The line was stolen by Trump. It was originated by Al Franken, back when Franken was a comedy writer. It was later picked up by Chris Rock as well, in his standup routine.

The line was all along a case of Trump picking up something that he thought was funny and might make him look clever, provided nobody remembered who actually wrote it.

My only question in the end is who is more odious; Al Franken or Donald Trump? It's really hard. I will at least have to give Franken credit for writing his own "jokes."

Rusty;

"Regarding your comment, Salon did not call Trump “a stone cold liar.” I did that.

What Salon did wasn’t even any original reporting. It was a summary, and a very well-written and concise one at that, of what had already been published, including at least one of the original Trump—to-Conway letters.

I don’t give a rat’s ass if you think Salon is left-wing. We all know that it is.

What you are supposed to do if you don’t like the story is to say what exactly is wrong with the story. In detail. But you can’t do that because it is all true and accurate with hyperlinks to back it up."
Pure speculation on your part, but what of George Conways behavior? Isn't that the gist of this thread? Sorry for leading you astray.

Interesting point: people who proudly self-identify as Smear merchants never have to be goaded into saying whatever it takes to defend the indefensible on the left and attack anyone on the right who dares fight back against the left/LLR's.

Just an interesting observation.

What if Twitter moderated tweets like Althouse is doing here?

I think it would perfectly reasonable to delete Trump's nasty tweets such as his bitter attack against George Conway. One benefit to letting the president say whatever he pleases - no matter how crude and offensive - is that it reinforces the public's perception of him as one crude dude.

"That marriage isn’t worth saving unless one or both of them removed themselves from the situation."

They have four kids. I dunno - maybe this weird passive-aggressive/aggressive interaction works for their marriage? Whether it works for their kids is another question. I wish they would take it out of the public square. It's cringe-inducing.

This name calling is so tiresome. Why doesn’t George Conway focus on making good policies, if he’s such a notable conservative. He’s wasting valuable access.
