Under President Trump, U.S. manufacturers posted their best year in two decades, the government reported Friday.

The manufacturing industry created a net 284,000 jobs in 2018, its best performance since 1997. The Labor Department said manufacturers added 32,000 jobs in December.

Most of those new jobs were in durable goods such as fabricated metals and electronics.

Mr. Trump has made job growth in manufacturing a priority. In 2017, factories added 207,000 jobs, for a two-year total of 491,000.

Confusion abounds.

“The Trump re-election campaign sparked widespread confusion inside the Trump administration and the cellular wireless industry on Friday night when it advocated for a nationwide "wholesale" 5G network, which was 180 degrees from official White House policy.

Driving the news: For months, 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale had been arguing for this policy on Twitter, but had been clear it was his "personal opinion." But now, Politico had a Trump campaign spokesperson, on the record, seeming to present a major government intervention in 5G as the campaign's official position.”

An entirely self-interested suggestion for anyone looking for their next fiction read: Today I Am Carey. Releases Tuesday.

Booklist says: Shoemaker's story of an artificial life coming to terms with its own emotional world finds its place among the long and varied tradition of explorations of robot–human relations, falling much closer to the gentle utopian vision of Asimov than the grim and satirical Sladek. Recommended for any reader, genre or otherwise, looking for a pleasant and engaging read.

Publisher's Weekly says: Kindness, love, and compassion make Carey an empathetic character through which to view Shoemaker’s complex, beautiful world.

Library Journal says: Carey serves as a caretaker for three generations of humans, experiencing holidays, weddings, birth, illness, death, and everything in between. Shoemaker does a fantastic job of showing the meaning of these milestones through Carey’s almost childlike point of view, and Carey’s development as a character is fascinating.

An Alzheimer's patient faces the end of life in the care of an android who can emulate her absent family and comfort her in her delusions; and caring for her sparks the beginning of sentience in the android. After she passes, it joins her family, caring for them through four generations. Through the android's eyes we see birth and death, joy and pain, friendship and work. It's about life -- and an android's memories.

Got an order confirmation email from Amazon today. In it, they tried to push the Michelle Obama book on me. Trust me, they have no reason to believe I'd be interested in that. In fact, I haven't bought a book from Amazon in probably over a year. Why would that be the thing they linked to, when the algorithm would presumably have much better luck selling me ramen from Japan or a new coffee maker? Bias creeping in again, where it's not wanted and not useful.

There have been lots of rumors about the obama admin potentially spying on Ted Cruz as well as DJT, but we will need to see the evidence first for that.

It's quite believable of course, given the astonishing amount of illegal spying on American citizens, congresspersons and Senators by the obama admin.

FISA Court Judge Collyer's report which indicated that up to 85% of all FISA database queries/searches over a lengthy period of time were improper and violated FISA rules is just the beginning.

We had both Brennan and Clapper having to walk back their lies under oath about spying on American's/US govt officials. Brennan was forced to apologize. Under oath.

Of course, the rule at Althouseblog is that as soon as any obama admin official admits something under oath it is immediately labeled as "propaganda" by the usual suspects here.

We just watched a rerun PBS "Nature" show on Yosemite that kept bemoaning the dryness and increasing heat.

One thing they never show is where the snowmelt is before it gets to the waterfalls (which are in dire need of turbines for electricity generation).

I’ve been reading the book Althouse mentioned yesterday, “Early Riser”, really good premise, ice age and hibernation set in the future. There are The Sisters of Perpetual Conception with names like Sister Fallopia, Sister Contractia, Sister Vulvodina, Sister Zygotia, who religiously try to keep the human race from dying out. The population hibernates over the extreme winter and it’s not without danger as the science isn’t quite perfected yet.

Michael K.;

Here in the Sunday Night Cafe', I'd like to apologize to you for the name-calling that I engaged in recently the last time you and I tangled. My apology is unconditional. I am not negotiating anything in return. And as with all good apologies, I say to you I will never do it again.

Now, having made that clear (and that you owe me absolutely nothing in return for it), I would nevertheless like to ask in the interest of honest debate and the interchange of honest information, where did you get the story (a supposed story, that the legitimate press has ignored) that there was a payoff to a 19 year-old accuser of Rep. Adam Schiff in a sexual misconduct claim? I had tried to make the point that the story appears to have oozed out of the QAnon/4Chan fever swamps. That it was such a volatile allegation, at a time when the nation's attention is going to be increasingly focused on Rep. Schiff as Chairman of House Intel, is what really pissed me off. I don't think that any reputable news outlets -- even pro-Trump conservative sites -- have touched the story. It is such a rotten, ugly story that it is even hard to find places where anybody takes it on to debunk it. Snopes.com did, as I indicated previously.

So I am coming back to you after an unconditional apology, Michael K; what's the deal with that Schiff allegation that you made? Where did it come from and who exactly is backing it? What is it based on?

I accept that you are a competent lawyer but you sure get yourself into a tizzy about stuff. Snopes is well known to be a leftist apology site.

A friend of one of my sons ran against Schiff in his second election. That district had been Rogan's who had been the House "prosecutor" in the Clinton impeachment. The Democrats went all out to defeat Rogan and take the district. Schiff won that race with huge amounts of money. Since redistricting and the Democrats' take over of California, Schiff has a safe seat. My son is planning where they will move once he can retire. California is going down the drain.

Roger Stone on Sunday suggested he has been "framed" by special counsel Robert Mueller in an Instagram post.

The post appeared to run afoul of Judge Amy Berman Jackson's barely week-old gag order barring President Donald Trump's long-time friend Stone from criticizing the prosecutors in the criminal case against him.

Mueller has accused Stone of lying to Congress about his efforts to have WikLeaks release information before Election Day 2016 in an effort to damage Hillary Clinton's candidacy.”

Yep, the Boston Judge in that case ripped Mueller for allowing 2 innocent men to rot away and die in prison for a crime that Mueller and his henchmen knew they didn't commit.

And on the day the Judge released the remaining 2 of 4 men in Prison because of the Mueller henchmen BS, Mueller didn't even have the decency to cross the street to sit in the courtroom as representative of his FBI office.

This is precisely the sort of guy, Mueller, who did in fact hide from Congress the fact that the Putin pal affiliated company that was purchasing our Uranium was up to its eyeballs in criminal activity and active investigations.

Mueller hid that from Congress, which is why the deal went thru.

Followed by $500,000 paid to Billy Clinton for a single one hour "talk" in Moscow with Putin's pals and then, one after another, Putin pal "donations" to the Clinton Foundation, eventually reaching the sweet sweet total of $145 Million dollars.

But hey, what's a little "profiting" off your office amongst insider pals/friends.......?

“Someone in the United States really wanted to Donald Trump to win the Nobel Peace Prize, and reportedly submitted a forged nomination for him to receive the prize – two forged nominations, in fact.

As The New York Times reported, police in Oslo, Norway, have launched an investigation after receiving a pair of nominations from someone in the United States for Trump to win the esteemed honor. The nomination committee announced the apparent forgery this week, which has now attracted the attention of both the Oslo police and the FBI.”

The actor who played "Rollo", the young and cool 'street-smart' friend of Fred Sanford's oldest son, has passed away at the age of 80.

And thus "Sanford and Son" joins the ranks of so many other situation comedies where all the regular and recurring cast members, or all but one, have passed away (the actor who played Fred Sanford's long-suffering son is still alive, and from Hogan's Heroes the guy who played the captured French resistance fighter is still alive, and from Beverly Hillbillies the actor who played Jethro is still alive, and from the Munsters the actress who played Wednesday is still with us - as is the young guy with the Beatle haircut from the later seasons of Are You Being Served?).

Life may be long or it may be short but be kind to somebody today. Or be brave on somebody's behalf. Or send a check to somebody who desperately needs a few bucks. Or just leave somebody alone who wants to be left alone. Life is easier, sometimes, when one reflects on how short it is.

I just wish Inga and Drago would move in with each other so they could just roll over in bed and insult each other. In fact they probably spend more time in conversation than 95% of other couples, so sounds like it would be a marriage made in heaven.

As an interim solution, if you click next to their names Firefox hides the comment, which is what I do with both. Not sure if other browsers do the same. I only endure them to get to Narciso's links, which are usually interesting.

Exactly. The last time the economy in Spain was truly crappy was just coincidentally the last time we had a socialist government. Every 5 - 7 years - when it gets too prosperous around here - the Spanish elect the socialists to give the economy an enema. We always get some nice growth after they're kicked out again, but boy is it shitty in the interim.

Almost 200 posts and no one has supplied the slightest hint of any support for the fake story that there was any settlement of a purported sexual misconduct claim for Rep. Adam Schiff. Nothing. Not a thing from any of you.

What a filthy, phony, nasty rumor to spread. Disgusting.

Complete reversal of Clinton (Bill) era known, widely published facts became the order of the day. Dems have been busy scrubbing the internet for years now. During the runup to 2008 there were lots of pics of Hildabeast Bar hopping with "The Little People". Tossin em down with her peeps. Can't find those pics since after her loss to Obama.

Dear Althouse - Can't we just have a spinoff Chuck and Inga blog? It would make the rest of of the posts ever so much more enjoyable.

Unless you have something substantive on the phony Adam Schiff "settlement" claim, why don't you just sit this one out?

Your personal attacks and clutter are adding nothing.

Your right Chuck. SNOPES does a perfect job of creating a straw man, and doing a thorough thrashing. Any monkey at a keyboard can pick an internet posting and disprove it. Micheal K made clear it was a rumor, and the people need a list of all the congress critters that have used the slush fund to pay off hush money.

That's the story. Does SNOPES say that's a hoax?

That's the story you should be chasing down.

At this time there is more evidence against Schiff, than we ever had against Trump. Zero reasons to launch any investigation.

No, it started out with Michael K reporting as fact that there had been a settlement for Schiff. Nothing about any "rumor."

And that is what Snopes went after directly; the fake, concocted story that there had been a settlement for Schiff. Snopes' reporting was a model on how to take down one of those faked rumors.

And again I say -- because I want to grind on this -- none of you have come up with a scintilla of evidence that there was ever a settlement for Schiff. Your suggestion that the phony rumor about Schiff makes it imperative that there be a full disclosure of House settlements is much like Donald Trump's claim that there needed to be an investigation of Barack Obama's birth certificate. A hoax, in search of some supporting evidence.

I do want to note something here; and that is that Michael K is not the only Althouse commenter to have trafficked in the Schiff phoniness. Others have as well. Each and every repetition of the story deserves the harshest condemnation.

I know I used my catchphrase "... you can talk about whatever you want," but you can't talk about WHOEVER you want, HOWEVER you want.

I do not accept back-and-forth comments about an individual named commenters, including the comments by the person that gets named over and over again. It is STUPID and BORING and it drives good people away. I will not let you ruin MY forum with that crap. I can't possibly monitor and delete everything in this category, but you have to help me or YOU are part of the problem. So my time was wasted this morning deleting a hundred comments that shitted up this cafe and I feel wronged by so many of you, including the asshole who took the time to write that I am not enforcing my new rules.

I agree.

These people are manifesting that they don't care about me. They are not good faith commenters. They're not about free speech, having fun, or getting serious. It's either trolling or some idiotic narcissism (and some game of responding to every single person who names you every damned time they name you, the back and forth that drives the comments up to 200). I regard it as intentional destruction of the blog I've worked on for 15 years.

Jim, this is one of Althouse's "café" posts. As stated on the front page: "At the Sunday Night Café... you can talk about whatever you want."

And what I wanted, was an answer to my unfinished business with the claim that a large sexual misconduct claim was made on behalf of Adam Schiff.

For my part, I comment on only a small percentage of Atlhouse's daily blog posts. Most of her posts have no comment from me at all. And in the vast majority of comments pages where I do post, my first comment is directly related to the subject matter. After which, a large handful of Althouse commenters attack me personally.

This time, on this "café" page, I am taking on the Adam Schiff rumor and I am asking others to stay out of it unless they have some substance to add. And naturally if anybody wants to talk about something entirely different I have no problem with it and no standing to object to it.

Adam Schiff is going to be in the news a lot in coming weeks. And insofar as Trump supporters want to knock Schiff down, I want to make them as uncomfortable as possible if they traffic in the phony "settlement" story.

iowan2 said...

Chuck all of your whining is pointless. Politics is mostly unsubstantiated rumor. CNN and MSNBC program the stuff non-stop. They have no facts.

You think the activity is a grand honorable endeavor.

Chuck is the self identified President Trump SMEAR merchant.

Start haranguing the media to get a list of all the congress critters that have used the congressional slush fund. Exactly like President Trumps taxes, all we can do is assume that Schiff did sexually assault an underage boy, until we see the the list of slush fund congress critters, it's a fact.

Still waiting for that first fact the FBI used to launch an investigation, that included capturing political campaign communications, and inserting spies into a political campaign.

Ann Althouse said...

The stuff about Schitt is fine.

But here's something I need you to do, including iowan2 (at 6:29): DON'T NAME ANOTHER COMMENTER WHEN YOU'RE DISAGREEING WITH HIM, ESPECIALLY IF THE NAME IS CHUCK OR INGA. I do not want to see these 2 names repeated over and over again. It looks like a pointless, childish game. If you seriously want to argue on the substance, quote the person and disagree with the material posted. Don't make it about the person.

I'm not banning all name calling, but I am vigilant about any name that gets repeated in back-and-forth fashion, as happens with Inga and Chuck. I don't care WHY it happens with those 2 names and I don't want to talk about it. I'm just saying I don't want to see it any more. And don't start up again with the topic of sockpuppets, which was repeated over and over in comments I deleted.
