Two links:

Sloop John B Live at Capitol Studios, 2016 with Brian Wilson & Al Jardine. It's simultaneously incredibly charming, & a sad reminder that time comes for us all.

From Ace of Spades, this made me smile.

Well, apparently Jorge Ramos and his Univision crew have been detained in Caracas because Maduro didn't like some of the questions they were asking in an interview. Things are getting interesting.

Always enjoyed the Beach Boys and The Sloop John B was one of my favorites.

Oh, OK. Thanks, narciso. You're on top of things. :-)

Mine too.

Good grief.

“President Donald Trump told governors that the aides to Xi Jinping, the general secretary of the Communist Party of China, were “central casting – glasses, pad.” He then mimicked what he thinks those glasses looked like, making tiny circles around his eyes with his thumb and forefinger.

This is far from the first time Trump has used that phrase. He’s pretty much obsessed with “central casting,” because he sees people as stereotypes, not individuals. This time he managed to offend Asians as well as anyone wearing glasses, all in one fell swoop!”

F people who pay a low-teen tax rate on tens or hundreds or thousands of millions.

Even DJT (during his campaign, but not now) liked this sorta jabber. And, the polling support is bigly.

Anywho, that's not positive. Just popular.

I've thought that this could be held off for another fourteen, or so, years before a meaningful reversal. I think that's still right. For the most part it was non-loons that won the midterms. The AOC and Jew-hater get a lot of PR, but the numbers aren't there.

And, there are backstops, even if the vote tide changes. Lag is built in.

Anywho, even assuming the worst, we got eight years. And, I'm already all ready.

Humanity's greatest technological achievement. One that likely would be prohibitively expensive today, and would require years to relearn how to engineer and do.

When we did it, I gotta believe that God was beaming with pride at his boys.

Donald Trump makes glasses sign. Chinese are all like 'meh'.

You want to really offend the chinese central committee? Compare Xi to winnie the pooh. No really!

Once again another missed opportunity for DJT to really offend the most unfair of the unfairingest old world communist regimes that consistently break every fair practice rule book on planet earth.

He made 'the glasses hand gesture'...how dare he. Outrage. Derangement. Someone call the national guard. He offended the communist central committee. This is an international incident of the highest order!!!

Articles of faith for the left:

1. Anthropogenic climate change will lead to catastrophe, unless humans make massive reductions in consumption of fossil fuels.
2. All problems of black Americans (and mostly Latinos and American Indians, but not Asians) are attributable to racist attitudes of white people, and those problems cannot be solved except by efforts of white people to eliminate racism from their hearts.
3. "Rich" people do not pay their "fair share".
4. Restrictions on immigration into the US are immoral and serve the purpose of preserving or expanding the gap between the world's rich and poor.
5. Orange man bad.

Al is the original Beach Boy whose voice is still in the best shape. Really until the last two years or so, he has sounded pretty much identical to his 60s voice. Brian, Mike & Bruce are definitely much more weathered, though the 2012 reunion tour was still an incredible event.

I guess Brian & Al have buried the hatchet about "Sloop John B". Al, the group's folkie, brought the song to Brian with the beginnings of a rock arrangement with the expectation he would sing lead. In the event, the leads went to Brian & Mike (though Al did get Brian's part on tour).

Al also changed the lyrics a bit and did a version about pirates for a children's book (which my neices liked) some years ago, Sloop John B - A Pirate's Tale. The book includes a CD of Jardine singing the new lyrics.

When the Pet Sounds box set came out, they had a number of "vocals only" versions of the tracks. Here is the vocals only version of Sloop John B.

Brian Wilson somewhat revisited the feel of "Sloop John B" on his recent No Pier Pressure album, giving both Al and former Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin major vocal roles, and they both really nail it: Sail Away.

...So, what happens when banks and credit card companies target people for their political views? Do we need to build our own banks, too?

Activist Laura Loomer, who has already been banned by PayPal, claims she had her account suspended by Chase Bank.

Enrique Tarrio, the black leader of the Proud Boys, a group that has laughably been branded a white supremacist organization by liberals, was also suspended by Chase. So was Martina Markota. And Joe Biggs, who made enough of a stink that Chase reluctantly gave him his account back....

In their era, The Beach Boys were looked down upon, but their music has held up much better than some of their more critically acclaimed peers. It's kind of neat to be old and see how posterity shakes things out. In his era, Louis Armstrong was considered more as a novelty singer, but nowadays he's bigger than Bing Crosby......I've lived to see liberals praise Reagan for his judgment and sanity.

Have you seen a photo of the staff, Inga? Do you think he was lying?

I saw the Olivia Colman acceptance speech for her Oscar. She was quite funny and endearing. It's possible for an actor to be likable and charming. I just hope that next week she doesn't start opining about Brexit or carbon emissions and ruin the moment.

This time lying wasn’t the issue. What adult, much less what POTUS uses their fingers to make circles around their eyes to mock people who wear glasses, specifically to mock Asians who wear glass. “Right out of central casting...”

You proud of his childish behavior?

Just what you'd expect from the kind of moderate serious, competent, non-hack Dem Althouse likes.

On the other hand, it might just possibly suggest that all Dems are the same after all.

Defendant Paul Manafort's sentencing memorandum (47 pages) [by The Guardian on Scribd]

Meaning I can't cut & paste some of the interesting sections of same (because Scribd garbles them). For example, after many months of solitary confinement, the extensive list of his health issues and the medications he has to take for them may bring tears to the eyes to the sentencing judge. Or maybe Trump's.

The memo does seem to make enough pertinent legal points that (if there were a Las Vegas betting market on his sentence) I'd probably wager 5 years or less.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/feb/25/paul-manafort-leniency-prison

The NYT & WAPO extensively report on and provide Mueller's full sentencing memorandum, but so far only crickets on Manafort's.

Inga will surely agree that The nerds with a note pad and glasses pales in comparison to Melania wearing the wrong shoes (MORE THAN ONCE!)

"President Trump and his wife left the White House to fly to Texas for a briefing on the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, and Mrs. Trump appeared on the lawn in black pegged trousers, black shades, an olive green bomber jacket — and her stilettos, now a trademark. Very much the same kind of shoes, in other words, she has been wearing since long before she joined her husband on the campaign trail."

That they also are part of the identity the first lady brought to Washington — that her comfort level and ability to walk in exactly the kind of shoes that cause other women, wearing more solid shoes, to wince and crunch their toes in imaginary pain was part of her narrative and image from the start — does not obviate the fact that they have also come to represent her remove, for both good and ill. Women in the capital are generally more associated with sensible pumps than teetering patent leather numbers.

This Mrs. Trump understands, which is why she changed into a more suitable costume (I use that word deliberately) for her arrival in Corpus Christi, Tex. The problem is that, as first lady, in an environment as fraught as the current one, there is no such thing as offstage. Even boarding a plane becomes a quasi-official moment in which all messaging, spoken or assumed, is mined for meaning.

The sharp point of the stilettos is that this kind of proactive analysis needs to be applied as consistently as possible across all public appearances (which, when you are in the White House, is all appearances).

The news media has been blathering on about how hate crimes has skyrocketed recently. No stats presented though. Then one discovers it's not hate crime convictions they are referring to, just accusations.

It's interesting, when I was growing up we had zero hate crimes, just crimes.

Crimes have come a long way baby.

When I found Dr. DODO I was in desperate need of bringing my ex lover back. He left me for another woman. It happened so fast and I had no say in the situation at all. He just dumped me after 6 years with no explanation. I contact Dr.DODO through his website and He told me what i need to do before he can help me and i did what he told me to, after i provided what he wanted, he cast a love spell to help us get back together. Shortly after he did his spell, my boyfriend started texting me again and felt horrible for what he just put me through. He said that I was the most important person in his life and he knows that now. We moved in together and he was more open to me than before and then he started spending more time with me than before. Ever since Dr. DODO helped me, my partner is very stable, faithful and closer to me than before. I highly recommends Dr. DODO to anyone in need of help.
