I used to care. I used to minute-by-minute blog the whole show, but now I haven't seen any of the movies, and there's nothing that can't wait until the next morning. What used to take hours is now accomplished in a couple minutes of reading.
But I have one question. Why were "A Star Is Born" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the "Drama" category? The Golden Globes have a "Musical or Comedy" category, and these 2 movies seem awfully musical.
From the Daily Mail article: "No doubt many were surprised by the win as Bohemian Rhapsody was generally poorly reviewed with 62% on Tomatometer by Rotten Tomatoes with top critics giving it 48%."
As for not talking about Trump:
It definitely seemed to be a concerted effort as host Sandra Oh previously told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I'm not interested in [talking about Trump] at all. What I’m interested in is pointing to actual real change. I want to focus on that because people can pooh-pooh Hollywood all they want – and there is a lot to pooh-pooh, sure – but we also make culture. How many gazillions of people have seen Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians? That changes things.'
One moment did get political, however, as Christian Bale had one of the most memorable speeches of the night while accepting Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his role portraying former US Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice. He blasted the former politician as he said: 'Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role... I will be cornering the market on charisma-free a******s. What do you think, Mitch McConnell next? That could be good.'

I was hoping that "Creed II" would win. Michael B Jordan is a great young talent, and I feel that his character, Adonis Creed, the boxer showed that big Commie lumberjack a thing or two inside the ring.
How come my favorite movies never get any recognition?
I would think the biggest charisma-free asshole would be Harvey Weinstein.
No one in Hollywood seems interested in making that movie.
"We make the culture" should make a lot of parents proud.
When you make yet another re-make of a movie, you not only have to compete with other contemporary films, you also have to measure up to the versions of the movie that came before yours. This was "A Star is Born 4.0". Enough already.
What they tried to make seem like a choice was probably some sort of contractual mandate. An attempt to salvage tanking ratings. I feel vindicated.
Ann, why talk about this at all? It is impossible to overestimate the unimportance of it to me.
Have you ever considered the hierarchy of intelligence of thought:
lowest level: talk about people
mid level: talk about things (movies)
highest level: talk about concepts/ideas
Ann, where do you fall?
I don’t understand why the Golden Globes were ever so important to spend hours on for people who aren’t in show business. Frivolousness has it’s appeal I suppose.
Hollywood and the Democrats work hand-in-hand with Satan. I would expect them to thank their master.
How many gazillions of people have seen Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians? That changes things.'
What, exactly, does that change?
Also Christian Bale is a well-known asshole, so he would know what he's talking about.
Why do we listen to people whose key skill is to deceive the public into believing they are someone they are not?
Christian Bale is a great actor. I trust his opinions on acting. Everything else, forget it.
Hollywood pushes the Left's narrative.
If it wasn't for the public-figure restrictions, Cheney could sue the shit out of the people behind Vice.
Hollywood should move this year's Oscar broadcast to Wakanda. Most of them already think it exists.
The Golden Globes were fake news even before there was fake news. The "international" journalists were paid to be there by Hollywood and they had no say in the awards or voting. The studios took care of that.
You can tell how superficial a profession is by the number of awards and prizes it hands out (e.g. journalism, arts and entertainment).
My wife and I went to see A Star is Born. The movie was sold out, so we decided to see Bohemian Rhapsody instead. When we made that decision, we didn't know anything about Bohemian Rhapsody and were not big fans of Queen.
The very next night, we returned to the movie theater and saw A Star is Born.
Both of us liked Bohemian Rhapsody much more. We considered ourselves lucky that A Star is Born had been sold out on that first night, thus compelling us to watch Bohemian Rhapsody.
Lady Gaga acted superbly in A Star is Born, but this movie was too slow and too long. It is 2 hours and 14 minutes. About a half hour should have been edited out. The story wallows too much in the male lead's alcoholism.
A Star is Born is not a bad movie. It's OK. However, it's not better than Bohemian Rhapsody, which is an excellent movie.
Is the Movie Dirty Dancing a Musical?
Satan?? Seems like Hollywood gave their soul to him decades ago.
TV Awards Shows: in case the political messages weren’t blatantly obvious in the entertainment, tune in once a year so we can review them in a five-hour cram session.
My wife and I went to see another movie (I forget which) that was sold out, so we decided to watch Crazy Rich Asians, about which we knew nothing.
We both loved Crazy Rich Asians. I recommend it very highly.
The movie shows how the richest people in Singapore live. They are not only fabulously rich, they are very nice people. The movie is delightful from beginning to end.
Browsed through nominees and awards online this morning. Would never watch the show or any award show. Not familiar with most of the movies or many of the actors/actresses who were were nominated. Most deserved award was for "The Americans" which was one of the best TV series of recent years.
The movie shows how the richest people in Singapore live. They are not only fabulously rich, they are very nice people.
I wouldn’t count on that being real at all. And nice people do not put dead fish in young women’s beds, nor do they paint a suggestion that the young woman should just go die in blood on her window.
so, he's saying that it was Satan that gave him the ability to slander and misrepresent someone?
Thanks for the write up, but even though you don't care enough to watch any of it any longer, I'm not sure you need to do the recap. Does anyone care? (it's kinda like the government shut down: the press makes a big deal of it, but really, does anyone in the street care?)
Any republican thinking that the democrat party will ever engage honestly had best put down the pipe. The democrat party is no longer interested in anything but destroying the Republican Party and this country. It is a death match.
Crazy Rich Asians is not a new thing at all.
Out in Asia this is known as the way things have always been.
For thousands of years.
Rich Chinese in Singapore? What a uniquely modern concept!
Its as if the city was not founded on the China-East Asian trade, which was at the time, as it has been forever, conducted by Chinese. The Europeans competed for a slice of this, and for a short time dominated the global-distribution side of it. But the real money was and always has been in Chinese hands.
The surprise, such as it is, is the revelation of cluelessness and parochialism among the American intelligentsia.
Rich Chinese, in my experience, are a mixed lot.
I would not say that they are nicer than any other lot of rich people.
One difference is that traditionally intergenerational wealth transfer is rather poor, so there is less of an "old money" thing, nor is there even an unofficial aristocracy. This is and has always been mainly a society of the noveau-riche.

You and me both, ma'am. Not a bad start to a manifesto, really.
I mean, I know nice people like you don't have those, but that's a tiny piece of a sentiment that's more widespread than most realize and that will play an ever-larger role in national politics. I think it will, anyway.
"Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role"
You mean, it's true what they say, that Hollywood is a satanic force?
Don't forget to buy your "I Really Don't Care, Do U?" merchandise using the Althouse Amazon portal.
On Rotten Tomatoes, A Star is Born has a 90% score from critics and an 81% score from the public. Bohemian Rhapsody has a 62% score from critics and a 92% score from the public. The Hollywood Foreign Press went with the public rather than the media elites.

Mitch McConnell is boring as shit. At least Cheney has gravitas.
Lady Gaga with a spoon
There were more wars saved and created during Obama's administration, and immigration reform and abortion zones in social justice zones, than previous administrations. If anything, the war in Iraq was sustained under Clinton, concluded under Bush, and was revived and redistributed under Obama. Hopefully, Trump will be more careful about his choices.
There was also Close who offered her belief that her mother's life was "sublimated" to her father's will. That's fine. That's her perception, and perhaps an accurate observation. An anecdotal data point. She then proceeded to generalize about relationships between men and women. We're not children anymore is not limited to sex, and most adults should be and are (were) capable of reconciling their interests.
I used to care. I used to minute-by-minute blog the whole show, but now I haven't seen any of the movies, and there's nothing that can't wait until the next morning.
I also apply this to the Tony Awards, the Emmy Awards and the Oscars.
Vice is a musical?
I don't care about awards show. Maybe I am too old to get excited about them. Use to love watching for the movie info. Later I watched for the clothes and Joan Rivers. Now I just look at the clothes on the internet.
While I was watching a PBS documentary about Carol King last night, Lady Ga Ga was saying this at an awards show.
"As a woman in music, it is really hard to be taken seriously as a musician and a songwriter"
I have a morbid curiosity in regards to Hollywood. I'm amazed at how much they are willing to burn for their causes. Vice has made $30 million, which is half its production budget. On the Basis of Sex, the second RBG movie of 2018, hasn't broken $4 million in ticket sales. On the other hand, Gaga's movie sold $390 million worldwide on a $36 million budget.
Why were "A Star Is Born" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the "Drama" category? The Golden Globes have a "Musical or Comedy" category, and these 2 movies seem awfully musical.
The studios decide which category they go in. A few years ago, "The Martian" was in the comedy category.
The GGs have a problematic history. They are given out by a very small, self-selected group of critics, bloggers, and photographers. They do not have the same ethics rules as the Oscars. There have been events surrounding some awards that have the appearance of bribery. For a long while, the awards were decided by a meeting of the board members, not by a vote.
If Christian Bale were to develop painful a bowel cancer because of his satanic inspiration, would people care?
I saw A Star Is Born on the big screen with my three adult daughters and we were all blown away by Lady Gaga's performance, not to mention Bradley Cooper's. Unapologetically classic Hollywood, the film manages to retain the best aspects of the 1970s and 1950s versions while rooting itself fully in the present.
That was rude of Bale to insult Rachel Maddow's mentor and hero like that.
As Rachel says, "Endless War Against Muslims For Big Oil...Forever!"
And it's as drama as drama gets -- tragedy is the very definition.

He was method acting a bad guy role and was so successful there was collateral damage.
He did it for the art.
" it is really hard to be taken seriously as a musician and a songwriter"
(when wearing a meat dress)
"The Golden Globes have..." Seriously, shouldn't that be singular? Isn't it the Golden Globes Award show, or Award Committee, or some such? When referring to The Golden Globes do we think of a single agglomeration of globes, at least until they are dispersed, or do we consider each individual globule, with two or more being plural?
I love Christian Bale, and I intend to see Vice, but I'm sure it's pure propaganda. I hope it's entertaining propaganda.
I used to believe the smear. I used to listen to Thom Hartmann and believe what he said about Cheney. I'll watch the movie for shits and giggles.
ps; When actors win awards they give political speeches. Why not have politicians give script readings when they win elections? "Thank you, Iowa--and I will now read Blanche Dubois from 'A Streetcar Named Hillary's Bank Account'."
Baleful comments like those about Cheney doom the upcoming Oscars to even lower viewership ratings. It is what they wish for in their nihilistic dreams.
Isn't A Star is Born just a remake? I don't think any remake should ever be up for any reward other than "Best Remake".
If Cheney were Satan, would you mock him?
Hey I turned the TV off after watching Da Bears lose on a bad bounce, and my Chargers duking it out with Baltimore. Who cares what happens in that incestuous awards ceremony in Hollyweird? I know, I know, horses for courses and everyone can eat the sort of hay they want. But for me--the Golden Globes, the Oscars, the Emmies? Meh.
Christian Bale is without a doubt our greatest actor. And while I detest Hollywood’s politics, I would think the primary author of the Iraq War might be ripe for conservative reassessment right about now.
A few years back, the LA Times ran a story detailing how corrupt the Golden Globes are. They're bought and paid for by the studios, and the journalists behind it are hackier than the White House correspondents.
Oscars at least are voted on by the Hollywood community, so there is at least some judgment involved. Imperfect, but human.
The Globes are strictly about the cash. There is absolutely no reason to treat it as anything other than contemptuously.
Ending the Iraq war was clearly a mistake. It was sustained under Clinton, it should have been maintained under Bush, then Obama would have Gaddafied Hussein and redistributed the conflict and people.
I don't particularly like Cheney much. I think he is very accomplished. We have lots of people like that.
I don't like self righteous liberal assholes who abuse their influence. I doubt I'll be seeing any more Bale movies. But I don't see many movies period.
Isn't A Star is Born just a remake? I don't think any remake should ever be up for any reward other than "Best Remake".
It's about the third remake, and not nearly the best. John Waters says they should only remake the bad movies.
I take some satisfaction in finding out this morning that the Golden Globes were on last night.
The Golden Globes are the finest award money can buy, as Pia Zadora found out in 1982 when it was bestowed on her.
Earnest Prole said...Christian Bale is without a doubt our greatest actor. And while I detest Hollywood’s politics, I would think the primary author of the Iraq War might be ripe for conservative reassessment right about now.
I see your point and for all I know, Bale did a masturful job playing Cheney. But now that I know his intent, I'll pass.
One moment did get political, however, as Christian Bale had one of the most memorable speeches of the night while accepting Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture

Liz Cheney response: "Satan probably inspired him to do this, too."
I'm glad none of Harvey's minions gave one of those truth to power speeches......For people who claim to be reflective and self-analytical, it's amazing how few of them realize what self righteous assholes they look like when they get political. Cardinal McGarrick (or whatever his name is) cannot use his pulpit to preach against the evils of premarital sex without looking like a jerk, and Meryl Streep should not use her platform to tell us how to get better people.
I saw the Black Panther movie. It was pretty good so far as special effects and action sequences go. I guess Wakanda is no bigger a crock than Camelot or Sherwood Forest, but does everyone there have to be noble and brave, including the villains?......It's possible that someday I will see at least the first half hour of A Star Is Born or Boheme Raps, but not if it involves leaving the house. I need the safety and reassurance of my remote control before undertaking such a risky commitment of time.
