"Revelations that as many as 20 deputies at the Compton station have matching skull tattoos revived concerns by watchdogs that gang-like groups are operating within the department."

"Villanueva has signaled a mixed attitude toward the tattooed deputy clubs. He has said that cliques could be a sign of low morale, but he added that some of the most honorable officers he’s known have been part of the inked groups. Villanueva recently visited the East Los Angeles station, where he once served, wearing a shirt bearing the station logo of a boot with a helmet on top of it — a symbol McDonnell had discontinued as part of an effort to rid the department of potentially toxic imagery."

From "In historic upset, Alex Villanueva beats incumbent Jim McDonnell in race for Los Angeles County sheriff" (LA Times).

The la county sheriffs have a bit of an us vs them attitude. They have to serve in the county jails before they are assigned to a station. And that reinforces an us vs them idea. Plus the headache if they arrest, but it’s very hard to get charges pressed. Especially with decriminalizstion stuff that got passed. Plus over crowding that gets sentenced effectively halved.

Villanueva is a symbol of lawlessness in a city where some gangs of thugs are more equal than other gangs of thugs, until they aren't and other gangs of thugs become more equal.

If the media did its job with any integrity, people would know why LA and Chicago are crime ridden hellholes.

Why are they crime ridden hellholes?

Given the prevailing atmosphere, I'm surprised not to see in the article a discussion of whether these tattoo groups correlate with race.

There was a time when most people would assume only that the deputies went out drinking together.

The real story here which everyone is avoiding is why so many election results are being overturned by late ballots.

The top ex guy, McDonnell, was brought in from outside (LAPD), and was not very effective from what I read. This was after another scandal in the jails, with again basically gangs of Deputies.

LA County Sheriffs patrol unincorporated areas of LA County and contract cities. Plus securing 18,000 inmates per day.

Areas they patrol:

I believe the sheriffs have also had a lot of payouts/lawsuits.

That attitude is akin to saying that businesses are like unions. It gets us nowhere.

Police work tends to attract a different kind of person than Social Justice work. But nothing stopping the Social Justice folks from signing up to be police.

Colin Kaepernick should join the Baltimore Police Department. Show everyone how’s it done. But he won’t. Police work is incredibly stressful. Social Judtice work is incredibly easy.

That's a Guinness-level coincidence.
