Newly released footage of the Acosta accosting.

ADDED: This is an important cultural moment. There is now a comic meme about being physically violent to a woman. Notice how it's upping the violence that makes it funnier and funnier. It ends with a "Road Runner" type image where a bag of "intern feed" is handed to the woman and then a giant weight falls on her. Have we ever seen mainstream comedy like that before? We're laughing at a woman getting crushed to death. And am I the only one who sees the words "intern feed" and thinks of Bill Clinton's semen?

i LOVE that close ups are Now Officially declared: DOCTORING

Ann Althouse said...

This is a comic montage, based on the closeup video that was called "doctored." I have a post about the undoctored original footage where I say Acosta hits the woman. I stand by my observation. I used WaPo's video, but some people in the comments wrongly accused me of using the so-called "doctored" image. The so-called "doctored" image was missing some frames which caused the hit to seem to occur more quickly than it did.

Anyway, this post is about the Colbert show's comic video. Please watch it before commenting!

Must admit I never thought of Bill Clinton's jelly, but then I often try not think of him, much less his junk.

But hey, when the intern is working in the White House, she is non-human. You can get away with it. It being either physical assault or sexual assault.

An accurate Road Runner farce would be:

Acosta sets trap of intern of intern food and ACME safe perched precariously over spot where intern will eat intern food.

Intern eats the intern food, ACME safe doesn't fall, intern happily departs.

Acosta left to wonder why ACME safe doesn't fall, ACME safe falls on Acosta.

What a hackneyed rewrite of history. What the fuck else can lefties get wrong, for chrissakes...

More than this intern, if you are married to someone considered unhuman on the right, then its fair game to assault your home. Granted, Colbert actually complained about this on Twitter, but I guess to be balanced, he then had to make this skit about abusing women is fun and humorous.

One of the party organs crafting "humor" from the work of another of the party organs. The way they wring every drop out of this current centerpoint of attention to ridicule the Bad Orange Man would get a respectful nod from Haydn for industry, if not for art.

Endlessly self-referential. If we need a thought of Big Dog to spackle the farrago together, so much the better. It's his world, and we are all still stuck living in it for a few more fleeting moments.

Ann Althouse said...

"It'says "intern feed" on the bag, like "bird feed". Just sayin'."

Thanks. Fixed. It's more apt as "feed," because it more clearly suggests the "Road Runner" idea of an animal being handed a bag of food to distract it.

What's interesting to me about Acosta is that his behavior does a 180 after one of these skirmishes. He goes on the air at CNN and presents himself in a professional and diplomatic manner. The difference is striking (and phony).

"An internship is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period of time.[1] Once confined to medical graduates, the term is now used for a wide range of placements within businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies. They are typically undertaken by students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field. Employers benefit from these placements because they often recruit employees from their best interns, who have known capabilities, thus saving time and money in the long run. Internships are usually arranged by third-party organizations which recruit interns on behalf of industry groups. Rules vary from country to country about when interns should be regarded as employees. The system can be open to exploitation by unscrupulous employers [and by Jim Acosta]"

I'll judge the video when I see it, but, generally, hitting women looks and feels different than hitting a man. Why is that? Some of it is traditional chivalry but some of it is that women are generally smaller and weaker than men, especially in upper body strength. I've taken note of some examples of larger men taking a physically bullying stance toward a smaller man. (That's something that makes me think of LBJ, whom I loathe.)

How to handle grandstanding reporters who wish to subvert the solemnity of a press conference? I look back to some of the show trials like the Chicago Seven. Perhaps the more maladjusted reporters could be shackled to their chairs with a ball gag in their mouth. Sarah or the intern could take the ball gag out of their mouth to let them ask a brief question. If the question is falls outside accepted guidelines, Sarah or the intern could quickly reinsert the ball gag and whip the reporter. The only downside to such a system is that it would encourage reporters to ask disruptive questions in order to get the full treatment......Perhaps the better way is to have the reporters sit in another room and then have their questions forwarded to their lawyers who are sitting in the press room.

Leftist double standard, same as always.
I would have Acosta invited to the next presser President Trump does, and I would have a retired Navy Seal, or Ranger, or Green Beret, handle the mic. He would watch the President, and when he nodded, the 6'5" 285 military man trained to kill with his bare hands, would have the mic in his hand in a manner of seconds. Chances are President Trump would have the opportunity to nod, a few seconds into a speechifying media type question and cut them off. Yes, you would physically threaten the media with raw size and power. On purpose. For show. Because you're the President, and you can.

Yancey Ward said...

The Roadrunner bit was unfunny because the meme portrays Acosta as a successful Wile E. Coyote- it cuts against the grain of the cultural reference in a way that just falls flat- it isn't like the intern has a much higher social status than Acosta- she is the "Road Runner" in the food chain of journalism here, and the writers for Colbert know this, but just can't write the scene the way it needs to be written to make it acutally funny. It amazes me how unwilling the Left's comedians are to make fun of themselves. Humor can be used effectively as status raising tool, but a great deal of that humor has to be true self-deprecation- the Left basically fails on this 100% of the time now.

Just watch the correspondents' dinner routines with any Republican President, and then watch those with President Obama- the difference is stunning. I think the Soviet press in Stalin's time probably were more willing to poke fun at the leader than today's journalists were at Obama. People who are unable to make fun at their own expense just seem less human to me.

Word has somehow got around that a split infinitive is always wrong. This is of a piece with the sentimental and outworn notion that it is always wrong to strike a lady. Everybody will recall at least one woman of his acquaintance whom, at one time, or another, he has had to punch or slap. I have in mind a charming lady who is overcome by the unaccountable desire, at formal dinners with red and white wines, to climb up on the table and lie down. Her dinner companions used at first to pinch her, under cover of the conversation, but she pinched right back or, what is even less defensible, tickled. They finally learned that they could make her hold her seat only by fetching her a smart downward blow on the head. She would then sit quietly through the rest of the dinner, smiling dreamily and nodding at people, and looking altogether charming.

A man who does not know his own strength could, of course, all too easily overshoot the mark and, instead of producing the delightful languor to which I have alluded, knock his companion completely under the table, an awkward situation which should be avoided at all costs because it would leave two men seated next to each other. I know of one man who, to avert this faux pas, used to punch his dinner companion in the side (she would begin to cry during the red-wine courses), a blow which can be executed, as a rule, with less fuss, but which has the disadvantage of almost always causing the person who is struck to shout...

Sounds like a cop out. You seriously expect us to believe that you can't imagine the video, "see" it in your mind, exactly the same way but with a male intern? Really?

generally, hitting women looks and feels different than hitting a man.

I agree. That is why we have comic strips where the long running gag is a wife beating her husband. Usually with something heavy:

Maggie and Jiggs Maggie hitting Jiggs with a rolling pin when he comes in late

Snuffy Smith the wife beating Snuffy with a cast iron skillet

Blondie with Ms Dithers beating Mr Dithers with an umbrella

Andy Capp with his wife beating him with a huge purse

Dilbert with Alice's "Fist of Death"

I have never heard anyone complain about any of these. Not you that I can recall.

In domestic abuse, women are every bit as likely to be violent and cause as much injury to their domestic partner (male or female) as men are. It's true also in male-male domestic couples. It seems to be more about domestic relationships than sex

When they go to the police claiming that their wives they used to be laughed out of the station house. They are called "hen-pecked" or "Pussy-whipped" both implying violence on the part of a woman making a man an object of scorn.

Female on male violence in America has always been an object for laughter and ridicule of the male victim. Jokes about male on female violence can be enough to get someone fired.

It just feels wrong to me. If one is wrong, both are wrong. If one is OK, both are OK.

Except for those claiming that women should get special (unequal) treatment.

a) she was not going to sit down next to me, and
b) there was no place else for her to sit.
I stood it (sat it?) as long as I could, and then I got up. She asked what was wrong, and I had to apologize for being unwilling to sit in the presence of a standing woman. Which I suppose is now some other kind of bad manners, but she didn't make an issue of it.

But that is pretty common among women. I am reminded of 'The Sweetest Thing', a female 'comedy'.

Essentially, every bit of humor was a girl being grossed out or embarrassed. Certainly not horribly stupid, or getting hurt.

Same with that Ghostbusters remake. I didn't laugh once. I was not alone.

There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness. There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always--do not forget this, Winston--always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever.'

I don’t always or even frequently laugh at Colbert stuff I see, but this was well done and on point.
