“It was [Adi] Shankar’s intention to crowdsource a script that 'in a clever way subverts [Apu], pivots him, writes him out..."

"'... or evolves him in a way that takes a creation that was the byproduct of a predominately Harvard-educated white male writers’ room and transforms it into a fresh, funny and realistic portrayal of Indians in America.' Shankar’s primary hope was that Fox would produce the script as an episode of 'The Simpsons,' but now that he has found what he calls the 'perfect script' and announces the winner of his contest, he told IndieWire that he has heard from people who work for the show that 'The Simpsons' is eliminating the character."

Metafilter.

I don't know how perfect that script really was, but by just eliminating the character with no explanation, it remains possible to bring him back whenever they want and explain it when the time comes.

Compare Roseanne. They eliminated her by killing her off, and now she can never come back... not without a really weird explanation anyway.

You could say "The Simpsons" isn't even giving its Indian character the dignity of needing his absence explained. He just becomes unseen, which is the way pop culture in the old days treated minorities. They're just not there. No explanation needed.

That's what deserves the label "microaggression." And my tag "seen and unseen."

Lots of characters in fiction, and people in real life, go "missing" in lefty dominated environments.....

They're still making Simpson shows?

The Unseen disappear with no more thoughts about them. They are evil and must go. Kind of like the Confederate statutes or changing names on buildings. A leaf out of the Communist playbook.

Solution: Roseanne will run the Kwik-E-Mart

chuck said...

Roseanne could come back as a ghost and haunt the people who killed her. Unfinished business and all that...

buwaya said...

This whole business has been bizarre, from an immigrants point of view.

Apu was an entirely positive and realistic character. There are millions of real Apu's, of every race and origin. These are the strivers who operate little restaurants, groceries, barbershops, taco trucks, donut shops, and etc. They are ubiquitous and admirable.

This removal is the liberal elite telling all these virtuous people that they are garbage.

No "Era of That's Not Funny" tag?

Solution 2: Apu marries Roseanne, then he dies and she "satis" herself on his funeral pyre.

That would show those pesky white males what's-what!

This is the same as telling those incredibly hard-working Chinese people running a dry-cleaners, while putting their kids through UCLA or Berkeley, that their occupation and very nature, their accent and culture, are somehow shameful.

And telling their children that their parents are unmentionable.

I feel a surprising surge of hatred for the management of "Simpsons".

It was the whiny Left that killed off Apu, who was a beloved character on the Simpsons, and treated exactly the same as every other character. His presence was including Indians as part of the American family.

Explain that to Dan, who was killed off in the original Roseanne, but was back in the reboot with no particular explanation.

That was the first thing I thought of. Apu deserves better.

Apu is revealed to be some white dude in "curry face." Megyn Kelly is fired again.

richlb said...

Apu has been integral to a lot of really great episodes (of course I'm talking about the first 10 season - it never reached those heights from that point on). The episode where he is fired from the Qwik-E-Mart is a top 5 for sure.

Slow down! I'm pretty sure this is real, actual fake news because the guy making the claim, Adi Shankar, doesn't work for or on The Simpsons program.

Fernandinande said...

It was ['Simpsons' writer Adi] Shankar

He's not a Simpson's writer, although the linked article tries to imply that he is, so you might want to fix your fake headline.

buwaya said...

This is not a new thing of course.

It goes back a long way, this business of parochial white people disguising their disgust with the ethnic by pretending to sensitivity. The ur-case is old, that of "Flower Drum Song". It is in fact genuine, a collection of true stories out of San Francisco's Chinatown, by a Chinese journalist. It is a Damon Runyon piece out of that milieu, or a "Tales of the City".

"Flower Drum Song" was excoriated and denounced as racist. By racists.

Psota said...

Yeah, God forbid they do something creative like - I don't know - reboot the character by, say, cashing out all of that sweat equity he put into the Kwik-E Mart; buying a bunch of real estate; and becoming Springfield's second richest citizen.

No just have him disappear...

n.n said...

Diversity -- the stereotypes are real. Indians are painted with one color, and any individual is interchangeable with another in the same class, and, in fact, disposable.

buwaya said...

But they are actually going to eliminate Apu, on grounds of "sensitivity".
The Shankar stuff is peripheral.

n.n said...

No Scotsman approves of Groundskeeper Willie

Not all Scottish-Americans... Correction, Great Britainish-Americans are janitors? It's just a stereotype? A diversity class?

William said...

They could have him shot in a convenience store robbery. The shooter, of course, would have to be a white nationalist. The wife takes over the store. She's a feminist. Lots of laughs in this plot line.

that their occupation and very nature, their accent and culture, are somehow shameful

They did the same thing with housewives and mothers: dependents and beasts of burden, respectively.

As an Italian, I'm going to crowdfund an episode proving that it was really the dishonest Micks or thieving gypsies and not Fat Tony who milked rodents and sold the Squeaky Farms Genuine Animal Milk to Springfield's dim Episcopalian school superintendent.

Geoff Matthews said...

They are taking one of the moral foundations of the show (and Apu is one of the few characters that is far more serious than comedy) and getting rid of him. All because he is a relic of the past.
My family went fossil hunting a few weeks past, and the hotel we stayed at was an independent place run by a sub-continental Indian. Thick accent too. Should he be ashamed?

Certainly not more than those who share Fat Tony's ancestry. And who knows anything about Johnny Tight-Lip's family?

Apu meets all of the attributes found in the Boys Scouts’ oath which is simply a listing of the indicia of being decent, of loving your neighbor – Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent.

And they’re getting rid of him? But are retaining characters who have few of those attributes. Like say, Moe.

First of the week I’ll be instructing my attorney to do the necessary research preliminary to filing a complaint. The elimination of Apu, without doubt, violates the United States – India Treaty on the Proliferation of Convenience Store Owners.

Fernandinande said...

Link?

NYT's April 2018 ‘The Simpsons’ Responds to Criticism About Apu With a Dismissal but it doesn't actually say anything about dismissing Apu - maybe they're dismissing the critics - unless I'm not reading between the lines correctly.

"14 hours ago" Simpsons may be saying goodbye to Apu for good but, along with the "may be", it's just more Shankar nonsense.

JAORE said...

But Joe Biden told me that Apu was legit.

Perhaps Apu could take a NA test, discover he's really a true Scotsman , change his accent and begin wearing a kilt.

JAORE said...

In case anyone wonders about my Biden comment, from Real Clear Politics:

'Biden told an Indian-American supporter that "In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking . . ."...'

JAORE said...

Dammit, NA test should, of course, be DNA test.

Told my wife that South Asians are a bright and industrious people, and there are plenty of South Asian doctors and molecular biologists and scientists and computer programmers and medical researchers. In suburban Austin, where I live, however, the only ones we ever see are running the local c-store. In rural Texas, they run the motels and fry the doughnuts in town after town. Stereotyping does usually have some basis in reality.

The linked article calls him a "producer," and I know that's wrong. I thought I had fixed it. Was he never a writer for "The Simpsons" other than this effort? I guess not. Will fix.

Maybe they could have Joe Biden walk into the KwikE Mart and talk in an Indian accent. Apu could be so insulted he tries to shot Biden but his gun jams. One of Biden's female body guard gives Apu her gun to finish Biden off. The laugh line would be the female body guard saying "Now you will keep your hands to yourself!"

I am starting to get annoyed having to defend things I don't care about. I haven't watched a Simpsons episode in probably a decade. I don't care about Gab. I think Info Wars is stupid. Yet their enemies are so evil that I have no choice.

It is not healthy when I start thinking about a good portion of the population in Hitler vs. Stalin terms.

When I stopped watching, which was probably shortly after the movie was released, Apu was one of my favorite characters. He's flawed, but so is everyone else on the show. He was just a genuine guy trying to make his best in America and what's not to love about that?

Static Ping said...

Actually, Info Wars is Hitler vs. Stalin terms. Gab and the Simpsons are more like Luxembourg vs. Hitler terms.

Not that I am trying to solve their problem that they created for themselves. But would they have been able to quell the mob (yeah, I know), if they got an actual Indian to voice Apu?

They could even find an Indian that owns or works at a convenience store.

Heck, Roseanne wasn't even killed off on Roseanne, she was killed off on The Connors. A second reboot of Roseanne that ignores what happened on The Connors is even less of an issue than ignoring an event of the last season of the original series was for the first reboot.

I may be wrong but....IIRC conservative actor James Woods, playing an FBI investigator, is the first and only person who actually says Apu's last name in a "Simpsons" episode:

"Apu? Apu Nahasapeemapetilon"?

For a good explanation why the show has been no longer funny for years, and when it started its decline, here's a good source:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqFNbCcyFkk&t=548s

Fact is, the audience dropped The Simpsons LOOONG before the present PC pussies dropped Apu.

I'm just surprised that Biden, when commenting about all NJ convenience stores being run by Indians, didn't use Apu's line:

"Please be patient . You will all have plenty of time to be gouged."

Rosanne should have a new show based on getting fired and being abandoned by all her former castmates (who she made millions for). She could tell a story about each one and the unfortunate death they experienced. Then use that to introduce her new family. Call it Roseanne's Back!
