"Democrats will never be pulled down so low that we hate folk. We can’t hate Republicans. We need each other as Americans."

"We’ve got to lead with love. You can’t lead the people if you don’t love the people – all the people."

Said Cory Booker, quoted in "Booker: 'We are not defined by a president who does not believe women'" (The Hill). I clicked through to that because the quote in the headline disturbed me a bit. As a woman, I felt otherized! It's weird to speak of "believing women." We're a huge group — the majority. How can you even think of the idea of "believing women" unless you first imagine us to be a different sort of animal from you, the men? We can't possibly all have the authority to command belief, so which ones of us are really getting the must-be-believed privilege? The ones with doctorates? The Democrats with doctorates? I really don't know, but I suspect that "does not believe women" is an insult and the real question is when do you use it?

I ended up selecting a different quote to feature in this post, though. The one I picked sounds nice. It's an aspiration. It's certainly not true that "Democrats will never be pulled down so low that we hate folk," but swap "will" for "should" and you've got something. "We can’t hate Republicans" is also literally false. You certainly can hate Republicans. You can and do. But to say that you shouldn't is a good idea.

I understand the rhetoric of making a simple declarative statement to express advice or desire. Maybe that's a notable feature of Cory Booker rhetoric. I associate it with adults training children how to act: We don't put our elbows on the table. If the child sees the potential to quip, Maybe you don't, but I do,  he shouldn't say it, but if he does, the old-fashioned mother can respond, Children don't talk to their mothers like that, and he will get the message that a second quip in the same format is not a good idea.

Destroy progressive institutions. Reform liberal institutions. And develop new institutions. The 1%ers, the Left, and colluders (domestic and foreign), took a three-pronged approach to remake America in their image.

Now that the warlock trials are over or simmering, and the "white girls next door" are their next targets, diversity is progressive and they have passed the point of self-reform. It seems like we should and can do better.

I am aware of the plot of the book. Perhaps it did not create hysteria where you live - but it certainly did in several groups of folks out here in Washington. I heard so much bullshit about how the evangelicals were going to do this, without any evidence of course, that I spent less time with some of the hysterical folks pushing the BS.

It should make you wonder why s it being dragged out again? Are not the 'evangelicals' now supporters of Trump? Don't 'we' need more weapons against all of 'Trumps Hate'?

Sure we do. So lets drag out the Handmaids Tail again and gin up some more concern for things not actually occurring, but we need the base spun up to 11.

The biggest problem with a Handmaid's Tale, as much didactic Republican/Conservative Bad dystopian literature of the late 80s/early 90s, is that it takes the actions and trappings of Communism and Totalitarian left-wing dictatorships and puts a conservative or religious figurehead there and pretends "See? Conservatives are BAD!"

You cannot target individuals. Its not a few, but millions, this is a caste we are talking about. You need to deal with institutions.

The people in the shadows will always be there, and will be replaced by more of their kind. They will always be there as long as that caste, their home and instrument, is ready to hand.

I neither hate, nor love, people I don't know. I love a good many people I know well, and have only actively hated one.

I don't love my fellow man as Jesus would have me do. Not if I do not know them. But I will respect, ignore, appreciate, pity, disdain, assist, care, pray for and help my fellow man as circumstances arise.

There is only one person I have ever actively hated. But I do hate highway traffic and brussel sprouts. Hate is too strong a word for a person that views the world differently.

Maybe hate can be reserved for mass murderers and muslims that burn children in cages and throw gays from buildings and rape christians. Those people can be hated for their actions and beliefs. A different political party? Not so much.

Arashi said...

Absolutely. Folks really ought to read some of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's books about what the Soviet Union did to its own people. 'Cancer Ward' and 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' would be good choices. If you want to be really depressed at the inhumanity of communism, I suggest 'The Gulag Archipelago'.

But of course, some folks would take them as manuals to be followed in getting their political wishes.

It is actually a very good book on the subject of what would happen to society when there is a plague or other event that created systemic and widespread infertility.

There is a short story I read long ago called "Mister Adam" about a nuclear accident that sterilizes all the men in the world.

The world decides it is all over and there is a reaction, including social changes that we saw with "the pill."

Then, about a year after the accident, a baby is born in a town in Tennessee. The father worked in a lead mine at the time of the accident and is the only man in the world not sterile.

It is mostly humorous about all the high status women trying to get him to impregnate them.

He gets so frustrated that he stands in front of nuclear beam and sterilizes himself.

Inga would love it.

Then a few months later, babies are being born all over. The sterilization, except for the poor guy who did it to himself, was temporary,

Those were the days I read science fiction.

The conservative, American conservative, ideology, is founded on the rights and responsibilities of individual men and women. It's not, for one, an adoption of Evolutionary Theory (The Handmaids Tale), but rather choice, sex, and life. Normalization of redeeming behaviors, tolerance of most behaviors, and rejection or suppression of others that violate dignity, life, and value.

Strictly speaking, the Left is fueled more by contempt than hate. bagoh20 said...

Fredder: " An bagoh20 thinks armed insurrection is the way to prevent a dystopia."

I'll attribute your misunderstanding to the normal lazy thinking of a leftist.

My comment clearly argued that citizen armed self-defense would prevent counter-constitutional insurrection leading to dystopia as depicted in "A Handmaid's Tale". Gun owners are the most Constitutionally informed and Constitution respecting of any large group of Americans. They have the desire, will, and means to prevent such an insurrection.

My comment in no way called for violence against political adversaries, but against those who might try to use violence to take away human rights, which is always how it's done in the end.

The quantity and vileness of left-wing calls for violence currently far outstrips those on the right, and those from the left come from high status individuals with large platforms and even government authority. If you examine all the recent politically motivated attacks, like the attempted murder of a bunch of Republican congressmen at a ball game, you will see that the left also dominates the field of actual political violence.

Your need to see yourself as above both sides blinds you to the differences that matter. Seeing a dog and a wolf as the same thing put you at serious risk of turning your back on the real threat.

Once you understand that you cannot achieve such a thing, that the leftists are unreachable for any number of reasons, only then can you begin to formulate a strategy for taking them on.

Similarly to how the scales have finally fallen from the eyes of many republican moderates who realize that if the lefties can engage in the character assasination of Kavanaugh, literally no one is safe, even though the republican moderates wanted desperately to believe it was just about Trump.

And even though the lefties have called every republican standard bearer "literally Hitler" going back to 1947 with Truman and Dewey.

I think if the Democrats take a beating in the midterms, the onky thing it will do is convince them to get even more viloent - and that is not going to end well for anyone or the country.

None of you listened to Kavanagh’s pathetic and disturbing temper tantrum apparently, or it was justified in your eyes. So, when men get upset, it’s justified in the Conservative mind.

In Ingaland women can scream and assert absurd nonsense - like that deciding a case invalidates the experience of someone involved in a different case - with nothing negative attaching to those doing so. But anyone who opposes this nonsense is showing "fear" and "hate". Anyone who speaks against the absurd is having a "tantrum".

This is very similar to her position that asserting women opposing due process hate men is "extreme" even though she routinely asserts the corollary, that supporting due process means hatred of women (which includes their wives and daughters).

There just isn't any standard she will apply generally. Every difference of opinion proves her opponents extreme and crazy even though she believes essentially the same things.

On the contrary.

Far from recognizing where its all heading, the dem/lefty leaders are the primary instigators of this typical lefty mob and herd and unthinking and unAmerican mentality.

The lefties want desperately to destroy all of our institutions and our history and our constitutional safeguards because those are the necessary steps towards allowing them to create their latest version of their utopian Brave New World.

Which, of course, would inevitably and inescapably deliver the same results as all the other lefty "utopias".

Now, inevitably, when the Inga's of the world create some hundred or so fictional and hoax accounts of Trump assaulting women, it's all going to look very very familiar to the people sitting at home.

Several family members of Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner have had their names and home addresses made public, and Gardner’s wife has received a “gruesome” video of a beheading.

A spokesman for Gardner has confirmed to The Daily Caller News Foundation that his family has been doxxed and graphic footage of a beheading was sent via text message to his wife. The Colorado senator — who has invoked furor from liberal activists for voting in favor of now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh — first revealed the doxxing to Fox News.

“The tweet is accurate,” Gardner press secretary Casey Contres told TheDCNF Sunday, also suggesting that his office may go into further detail at a later time. (RELATED: Capitol Police Arrest Ex-Democratic Staffer Suspected Of Doxxing GOP Senators)

Gardner is not the first Republican senator to be doxxed amid the Kavanaugh nomination frenzy.

Jackson A. Cosko, 27, a congressional staffer who most recently worked for Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, was arrested Wednesday for releasing the home addresses of Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham, Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch. Cosko has been charged with making public restricted personal information, witness tampering, threats in interstate communications, unauthorized access of a government computer, second-degree burglary, identity theft, and faces up to nearly 50 years in prison.
