Misread headline that puzzled me: "Ambassador says Trump wrong, quits."

I was all: So how did he say it? Troohmp? Tahrump? Tramp? Tromp? And why quit over that? Yes, it's embarrassing, but man up, ambassador.

It is a man. It's James D. Melville, the ambassador to Estonia. And he didn't mispronounce the President's name. He expressed the opinion that Trump is doing the wrong things, The Journal Gazette reports:
“For the President to say EU was 'set up to take advantage of the United States, to attack our piggy bank,' or that 'NATO is as bad as NAFTA' is not only factually wrong, but proves to me that it's time to go.”...

Melville is a senior U.S. career diplomat who has served as the American ambassador in the Baltic nation and NATO member of Estonia since 2015....
That is, an Obama appointee.

I like the way this Journal Gazette article just rambles on to other topics: "Merkel reworking asylum procedures... Campus hopes to save some ash trees... Deaf puppy rescued from crevice..."
Volunteers erupted in cheers as the pup – named Toffee – was pulled out of the narrow hole around midnight Saturday with the help of a snare and some food. Toffee fell into the inches-wide space around 5 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters, cave rescue crews and plumbers joined the rescue effort, lowering nets, snares and food to try to retrieve Toffee.
Toffee!!

That happened in Huntsville, Alabama, not Estonia, and the food used (I read elsewhere) was sardines. The puppy is an Australian Shepherd mix, so again, not Estonia-related. So here's a picture of an Estonian hound:

According to Wikipedia,
The Estonian Hound’s development was announced by an ultimatum issued by the Soviet Union’s Ministry of Agriculture and Economy in 1947, which ordered every Soviet Republic to establish a local breed of hunting dogs to replace the large breeds of hunting dogs bred at that moment. These large dogs were blamed for the rapid decline of Estonia’s wildlife population; it was established that only dogs with a maximum height of 17 inches were allowed to hunt. The result was a very agile and hard driven breed that has enjoyed tremendous popularity since then: the modern Estonian Hound. After Estonia regained its independence, the Estonian Hound was proclaimed the country’s national dog.

White (blue?) Australian Shepherds are prone to deafness.

"The breed was given the name Estonian Hound. The breed was introduced to the 2nd Soviet Cynological Congress in 1954."

The Wiki article about the generic brown dog was copied from the reference-free article linked above, and I'm calling bullshit on the whole dog story because the only mentions of the "Soviet Cynological Congress" are stories about this dog; copies or translations of that same article.

Obama ambassador quits. Trump blamed.

Trump hasn't had time to get rid of all the deadwood at State. Nice of this fellow to help out.

Speaking of newspapers, here in Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Journal, our sole newspaper for the last several decades, has been steadily losing content as staffers retired or quit and were not replaced. It has now also apparently given up any fig leaf of "non-partisanship" and has gone "full Monty" Democrat.
You have to hand it to them. When your readership is already steadily shrinking, is just the time to abandon any attempt to appeal to half the population!

True, the EU wasn't "set up" to take advantage of the US but it did in fact do so--with our support! We liked it better than the alternatives. Keep Germany busy, prevent WWIII, promote peace & prosperity.

But Trump is right to question, however crudely, the Cold War premises of our international relations.

Of course, the whole notion that they follow rules, in the "rule-bound" international order etc. etc., and that Trump breaks them is nonsense: they were just caught cheating with Airbus, Merkel ignored EU immigration rules, France has broken budget and debt rules, and of course the NATO 2% "commitment" is a joke.

Remember when the left was so hopeful about the electors being unfaithful and that they would NOT give the Donald their vote. Oh the joy, the rapture at the announcement of one of the crowd stating he would NOT follow the norms. Surely in a time that demanded justice many more would follow.

It was only by reading the entire article that it was finally revealed the unfaithful elector was a Hillary pledge.

I saw several stories on this ambassador and the "Obama appointee" was only noted deep into the article, not mentioned directly (appointed in 2015) or skipped altogether.

There are many ways to fake news without directly lying.

That name gave me a flashback to an earlier life. How did you come accross the Journal-Gazette? A Ft. Wayne, Indiana newspaper.

30-odd years ago, when I bought this house, I could stand out front in the morning and hear the splat-splat as the paper hit every other driveway down the street. Today, I am the only subscriber up in my end and can barely hear the next one hit if it is a quiet morning.

Or an "is".

Mary Beth said...

Of course, that depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

So few people received the local leftist rag, the Palm Beach Post, that I have to walk an extra two blocks to find a house to steal it from.

So this newspaper relegates Ambassadorial outrage over Trump in Europe to the importance of rescuing a deaf dog.

Good.

Longtime Ace commenter Cuffy Meh was part of the Toffee rescue. He had been taking a twitter break, but he posted about Toffee.

Even the Orange County Register seems to be going left.

Maybe the only people left working for newspapers (with the honorable exception of my friend, Bradley Fikes the Science reporter of the San Diego Union) are left wing journalism grads who have no other skill.

Next step is barrista.

Re Merkel It appears that she is just about done. "Angela Merkel’s position as German chancellor became more precarious on Sunday after her interior minister rejected a European deal on limiting immigration as insufficient, threatening her government."

I don't know what they do in Germany if they can not form a government. I assume they have to have another election. Given the way things are going the "leader of the Western World" - or is that Justin from Canada - is about to become a haus Frau.

German elections are every four years. We may have the historical highlight of seeing the Germans unable to form a functioning government in this four year stretch. I am not sure that's healthy and it sure makes you weak in any negotiation.

If Merkel nee Kasner is removed from office she can fall back on Quantum Chemistry, where she has a PhD. I don't know if she has an habitation.
