"Number one, the camera of history is rolling. And it is on videotape now. And we will be able to see exactly what history is showing here."

Said Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-NY) on Jake Tapper's "State of the Union" this morning (transcript here). It's all on videotape now. That amused me.

What was the topic? Oh, the panel was invited to talk about Senator Corker's statement "We are in a strange place. It's almost, it's becoming a cultish thing, isn't it? It's not a good place for any party to end up with a cult-like situation as it relates to a president." (We talked about that a few days ago on the blog, here.)

Jake Tapper was so into Corker's idea that he teased it before the commercial by saying, "Everyone, stick around. We're going to take a very quick break. Look into my eyes. What do you see? I'm the cult of personality."

I wonder what percentage of Tapper's audience just thought he was being pretty weird as opposed to realized he was saying some lines from this old song:

Lyrics printed and annotated here. The lines that follow the ones Tapper quoted are: "I know your anger, I know your dreams/I've been everything you wanna be ohhh/I'm the cult of personality/Like Mussolini and Kennedy/I'm the cult of personality." Kennedy! Also mentioned in the song are Stalin and Gandhi.

Anyway, Rick Santorum was also on the panel, and he said: "I would just say any president has a cult-like following within -- to say Barack Obama didn't have a cult-like following. He had absolutely a cult-like following --" Then he got cut off by Jennifer Granholm, who interrupted him and invaded his space like mad. (That lady is on fire. Earlier, talking about separating migrant parents and children, she said — with big passionate gestures — "You could drive nails through my hands. You could whip me on my back but do not take my children away.")

Meeks followed Santorum's effort to include Barack Obama in the idea that there's a "cultish thing" around a President:
MEEKS: Number one, the camera of history is rolling. And it is on videotape now. And we will be able to see exactly what history is showing here. Barack Obama when he was president, there were Democrats that did not agree with some of the things that he said. For example, TPP, they spoke out about it. They didn't reel it in. Even (INAUDIBLE) to immigration. There were members of Congress, Democrats who said -- and pushed it more on DACA, to create DACA.... But the Republicans here is yielding everything and the Republican Party no longer exists. It is the Trump party. We are losing our values. And when we took our oath of office it wasn't to a president. It was to a country. We are on a dangerous —
Obviously, there are Republicans who don't agree with some of the things Trump says. What's the real distinction here? Shouldn't a party reshape around a President if the President's any good? What compliment is it to Obama to say he didn't recreate the Democratic Party?

I'm pretty sure Jennifer Granholm's tv handlers give her too many meds before she makes tv appearances (or speaks at the DNC).

Of course, the criminal justice system does so all the time, and for good reason.

Ann, Trump can lead chants of “Lock Her Up” and repeat over and over to his followers that Hillary Clinton is a criminal and not a peep from you about Clinton Derangement Syndrome. But if there is any criticism of Trump you go into a tizzy.

Ann, you are intellectual dishonest.

The cult thing is mostly projection.

Sure, there are die-hard Trumpists.

But: O got more cultish adulation from Dems than Trump from GOPers, Trump gets a lot of flak from the Trump-hating cult of NeverTrumpers and Dick Durbin Republicans, and the Resistance is more cultish than anything we deplorables think or feel about Trump.

MayBee said...

Aside from that, there is almost nothing more worthwhile for our country than a panel of partisans arguing about whether or not the President has a cultish following.

Right?

Divorce also does that.

Also: sending soldiers to fight in wars does that.

THe Democratic party was very much reshaped under Obama. I don't know if he did the reshaping or not. But he ran as a moderate in 2008, and his supporters insisted he was moderate. In the last election, moderates like Jim Webb looked ridiculous trying to run against Bernie and Hillary's new progressive identity.

Yes indeed. It is time for that grifter to face the music. As for Corker, apparently he thinks only cultist support American nationalism.

Corker is part of the cult of Washington. They're about as bad as the Rajneesh. Tennessee is awake though and Corker is now a political Loser.

Well there was pussy grabbing; then there was Russian collusion; than there was Stormy Daniels (don't hear so much about her these days) and now it's Corker with the Cult.

I don't know nor much care what the next Anti Trump meme will be. I just know that one will come along as night follows day. It's not a new phenomenon.

As a young lawyer in the late 60's I talked with a secretary who'd been with the firm since it opened its doors in the mid 1920s. She was secretary to one of the founding partners during the 1930's. Each morning the partner she worked for would dictate a letter excoriating FDR as a fool, a buffoon, a traitor to his class etc. She'd take it down in shorthand along with the rest of the day's correspondence. In the afternoon she'd put the letter to FDR on his desk and ask him if he wanted to sign it. He never did. But the next morning, he'd dictate another letter to FDR.

That's fairly harmless. Contrast that with the cult of Hollywood and a washed up actor gainng a standing ovation for saying "F Trump" or a low talent comedienne holding up a severed head of the President. That's not so harmless.

I, for one, was happy to see Corker go. Not because of what he says about Trump, but rather for his role in the Iran deal disgrace. Good riddance.

But when you can cite a specific actus reus and a mens rea (even if it's not required under the statute) it isn't derangement, it's called probable cause to prosecute.

If I recall correctly, the Obamas dominated the magazine covers on the racks for a year.
The total media coverage of the Obamas was quite amazing. And all of it worshipful.
In contrast, though Trump has had plenty of coverage, he has uniformly been painted as the antichrist by all the mass media with any money behind it. The contrast is about as stark as can be.

This TV show is just more of the same.
And, as I always note, not one person there is speaking a personal opinion.
These are scripts, or at least prepared talking points almost certainly given them by their management.
They do not really discuss, there is no dialectic, no point-counterpoint as in Buckley's Firing Line.

The learning curve has been slow, but people finally realise they can trust Donald Trump to do what he promised them to do. Corker comes from the easily confused voter era of the big talkers doing the exact opposite of what they said to get votes. Trump has blown away the Congress person style always for sale. They see this strange Trump who cannot be bribed like it was always done as a Cult like demi-god. When run up against trump, they see the coronation of Napoleon that was cited in the earlier Apeshit Video post.

Our leftist friends here are, mostly, very much like these TV talking heads.
With a few honorable exceptions.
They do not engage, there is no dialectic. There is no discussion.
The fundamental qualities of honesty and sincerity really do only go one way, I have observed.
This is true in all venues, gold-plated professionals to anonymous internet posters.

I am reluctant to call this a Manichaean struggle, of dark versus light, but too often it seems that way.
The last flickers of light going out, in a twilight world.

Trump today, minding the cult:

Other cults: JFK (during his life, but even more so after his murder); Jimmy Carter (very briefly; the clay feet showed up pretty quickly); Bill Clinton (until this month when -- maybe -- #MeToo caught up with him); Teddy Kennedy, the "Lion of the Senate" who could neither drive nor dive); His Nobelness Obama.

Obama's supporters talked about how smart Obama was.

Guess which one gets accused of running a cult?

Sorry, I've seen this movie before.

The Reagan Presidency.

All the Press and the RINO's did for 8 years is yak about the "Teflon President" and the "Reaganuts" who accepted ANYTHING Reagan did - despite the fact that he was an "amiable dunce" and "Right-wing extremist".

This is all fun in a way. But - in another way its incredibly stupid. Trump - and the people who support him - want policy changes. Foreign Policy, Immigration, trade, etc. The RINO's, and the Democrats don't want change. So, why aren't we talking about policy instead of all this BS about "Cults"

The reason is: The Left-wing MSM doesn't want an actual discussion about policy. Because they might lose. So, we get all this NONSENSE about "Authoritarianism" and "Cult of Trump" and "Blah, blah, blah".

Elections have consequences & a lot of Republican Congressmen can't accept that. People like Flake and Corker don't want to Represent their voters. Well, too bad.

Re the Obama Cult, I remember going into the local Barnes & Noble the day after the first Obama election, and as I came through the main entrance there were the faces of Red Diaper Barry and Mrs. Red Diaper Barry staring at me, in an Orwellian scene, from the dust jackets of at least twenty books and half a hundred magazine covers. I've lived through a lot of presidential elections and have never seen such a display before or since. Just for balance they should at least have had a similar display featuring Mr. and Mrs. Trump so that "liberals" could get a solid Two Minutes of Hate in.

Maybe because it's true ? She violated most of the statutes about espionage and military secrets.

Kids went to prison for doing less than she did.

There are more reports coming which will provide even more facts about her crimes.

Keep tuned in, if your brain can hold a thought long enough.

I don't think Dems consider their devotion to Obama cult like. When the object of your devotion is a messenger from God sent to redeem America from its sins, such devotion is not cult like. They are simply giving the man his due.........It is perhaps useful and edifying to take this moment to reflect that the Rev. Jim Jones was an ardent supporter of Democratic causes. You don't see any pictures of him standing and embracing well known Dem politicians, but they exist.......Dems are far more at risk of falling into a cult. All this earnest talk of a higher morality should be left in Church. Government does not deliver us to the promised land.

Hillary Clinton is a criminal. Has been since at least the days of cattle futures, probably well before. How do you think she got her hands on half a billion dollars, she just gives really good speeches? Seems like her speeches aren't worth so much now that she's not in a position to sell out her country. At a minimum she's rotten with corruption and she may well actually be treasonous. She's lucky it isn't "String her up!".

As a native Tennesseean, I have found Corker to be a mealy mouthed disappointment. He and Flake are both checking out before they get Eric Cantored, I expect. Real weasels. Also, I saw Living Colour front The Rolling Stones at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in 1990 which was about the time that song was popular. I drove from West Tennessee and stayed with friends in Dallas. It was my first time in Texas although I now live here. In Austin tonight for an early morning hearing downtown and then I'm on to Houston for another hearing Tuesday. I'm hoping the Cubs beat St. Louis tonight for the sweep and retake the lead in the division as Milwaukee lost earlier. I timed my arrival at the hotel for the start of the game on ESPN. In other news, I saw were a minor track star liked the pathetic tweet in which John Legend attacked Paul Ryan's Father's Day tweet and I tweet told minor track star that I would not be following him anymore and hope he never wins another race, which is an absolutely true statement. Several of his track buddies and others leapt to his side but I got a surprising amount of support from the audience and they got real quiet when I posted the offending tweet. I think many were reflexively coming to the aid of their buddy and didn't really know why I confronted him. It was a pretty entertaining afternoon although I was afraid one of those short dicks was going to dox me or something before it was all over. That would be inconvenient. Damn. Cards just went up 2-0.

HEEELLLLLOOOOO?? Which legislation have republicans passed without any Nay votes from Republicans???

The Democrats are much more likely to lockstep.

Most Republicans I know think Trump is odd, and wish he'd shut up some of the time. However, having Hillary in office was horrifying. Trump is actually doing a great job in terms of the economy, jobs, decreasing regulation, tax cuts, etc.

Have public school children been taught to sing songs of praise to Trump? Have pictures and murals of him been put up in public schools? Not that I know of, but they were for Obama. Saying that there is a Trump Cult is a projection of his opponents.
