"After he and his wife divorced in 2015, she sued for custody of their children. Mr. Lee has magnets inside his ears which act as headphones; shortly after his divorce, he attempted to implant his shins with foam armor, which ended in swelling, burst stitches and removal. His children, he wrote in a GoFundMe raising money for legal fees, 'used to think I was an awesome dad with super powers, but now they have been told I am a self-mutilating parent with a problem and that they are victims for seeing the stitches in my legs.'"
From "Magnet Implants? Welcome to the World of Medical Punk/'It’s not good enough to talk,' says Jeffrey Tibbetts, a registered nurse whose home plays host to Grindfest, an annual meetup of biohackers. 'You should be taking action. That’s kind of our ethos'" in The New York Times (which chose not to allow commenting on this crazy nonsense).

I wonder if during my lifetime, we will come back to a time where it is okay to be judgmental about abnormal behaviours.
Heinlein's The Crazy Years. Later than he predicted, but actually even crazier.
He needs a GoFundMe for legal fees, with all the rapacious personal injury lawyers eager to take any potentially winnable case for a contingency fee? Doesn't sound like he has much of a case.
Foam shin pads? Screw that I want adamantium.
Titanium would be just fine.
There are bone replacements now that improve bone density and strength.
William Gibson was prescient. All of those people would fit nicely into his Sprawl novels from the 1980s.
Even Robert Heinlein's "Crazy Years" weren't this crazy....
Why is this any less self-actualizing than transgenderism?

The left considers anyone who owns a gun to be abnormal. They feel free to judge.
Its odd to feel a bit of California nostalgia about this.
This sort of thing, in other technical-artistic directions, was once much more common. Its nearly gone in fact. Its all bizarre in a familiar way.

i've often wondered why the NYT allows comments on some articles and not on others
His body his choice and all that but what about the doctors who are enabling this?
Why is this kind of medical (mal?) practice legal?
John Henry
>>now they have been told I am a self-mutilating parent with a problem
Maybe they were told that because he's a self-mutilating parent with a problem?
I agree 100% with the others upthread re: judgement. Good judgement used to be considered a life skill, and a sign of maturity.
Now, it is a character defect.
