My wife drove along that highway a few times, visiting friends in the area. The blocked highway is the worst effect here, it has cut off quite a lot of residents who now have to make a very long detour back to "civilization"; it makes a lot of the region much less livable. Its also going to be difficult to restore that route, as any fix will have to take lava flows into consideration.
A bunch of years ago a friend of mine was touring the Big Island with his wife. They were walking on top of old lava tubes near where the volcano sends its lava into the sea, when suddenly a small tree growing atop the old lava burst into flame. My friend was still thinking "Well would you look at that" when a crack opened up between him and the tour group -- not a large crack, and he had no trouble jumping over it, but the crack was filled with hot lava. Could have been a lot worse for him.
How about the racist Sen Schatz who advised the world that citizens of Hawaii are not “Hawaiians” unless they’re brown. A white US citizen that lives in Hawaii is merely a “resident of Hawai’i”.
As fast as that lava was moving, why didn't someone just go move the car? Looks like a good twenty minute window before the lava got there. Heck, just throw a chain on it and tow it--even if it ruins the tires and does nothing for the transmission; that's sure a heck better than getting it swallowed by lava.
Wonder if insurance will cover the total loss of the car?
Oh, and doesn't Obama come from Hawaii? Where is he?
After all, he is God, isn't he? He promised that his election would heal the earth. So why hasn't he stopped this lava? Surely a man who can stop the oceans from rising, like he said and the left told us incessantly, wouldn't be fazed by a small lava eruption.
Property prices already figure in the risk of volcano, so they're unaffected.
The Pompieans agree.
My aunt inherited her parent's property at Holdens Beach, NC. It's been underwater and un-housed since Hurricane Hazel. She was paying $0.95 in annual property taxes in the 90's.
Assuming this is a Lava "Cafe" I am going to post this by Roger Simon about what I also think is happening in politics today. It may be wishful thinking, but the Dems have been so busy "resisting" that they have very little to offer in the upcoming election. Do rational people really want a return to the Obama era of America groveling while the economy stutters? I don't think so.
Hawaii has a majority Asian population, Chinese, Japanese and Filipinos, all as brown as the native Hawaiians. But they aren't Hawaiian, or even part Hawaiian. All are haoles too.
Andrew McCarthy does a really great job eviscerating the fallacious arguments for redacting the portions of the House Intelligence Oversight Committee's dealing with what Comey and McCabe literally said in closed door hearings in March of 2017 and later in December, respectively.
Those redactions have no innocent explanations- they were only done by someone attempting to cover up the fact that Comey has been lying publicly about not saying it in March of 2017, and I think it likely that Comey was lying publicly because the original 302s were altered at some point after that March testimony to conceal the agents' original analysis of the interview. I strongly suspect that the recusal of Contreres from the Flynn case is connected to this issue in some way, and it explain's Judge Sullivan's order that all exculpatory evidence be given to either Flynn and his attorney, or given to the judge himself. I am will to wager that the battle is over those original 302s.
I remember that the Romans went through a period of making their Emperors Gods, while said Emperor was still alive.
One of them (a sane one) demanded to know what was he supposed to do when some peasant prayed to him for a sick cow.
That guy had more common sense than Barack Obama. Or King Canute, who literally commanded the tide to stop.... then sent his troops to attack the tide, to stop it.
Except in actuality, King Canute was using that as an object lesson on how little power he truly had.
The left, and barack Obama, never learned that lesson. So I think that these Hawaiians should demand that King Obama, healer of the world, come and reverse the lava.
Maybe he can do what Xerxes I did, and whip the lava to make it behave. Xerxes had the Hellespont whipped because his first bridge fell.
"Most homeowners policies provide coverage for property loss caused by volcanic eruption when it is the result of a volcanic blast, airborne shock waves, ash, dust, or lava flow. Fire or explosion resulting from volcanic eruption also is covered.
Direct, sudden damage to your vehicle is covered under most automobile insurance policies if you have comprehensive coverage at the time of the loss."
There could be an innocent explanation, but I'm thinking the owner of the Mustang was well aware of the terms of his coverage.

It appears that Schneiderman, although he didn't whack any chicks (which in no way is a disqualifier on dem side, in fact, potentially a resume bullet) he did threaten to kill several women.

"They allege that he repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent. Hurry up and wait for your house to be destroyed by a molten slug. But they probably have to assume a sudden deadly spew as at Pompeii. OTOH, who took the video?
The footage was kind of like watching a monster movie - slowly the beast crawls forward, igniting trees, houses at its edge, crushing cars. Black on top with a lava lamp stripe and lumpy ... like a toad. Not fast but who's going to stop it? Then - seeing those vents all in a line because they are on the East Asian rift - I had a very bad feeling. But it was fascinating, I have to admit.
The lava seen in the two videos is called A'A lava. pronounced ah,ah. Its much slower, and when cool, is very rough to walk on. Most of the flows around Kalapana , which was the last lava flow to damage homes, in 1990 i think, and one smaller one in 2010, were mostly A'A lava. the lava you have seen in many eruptions is the smoother lava, which moves much faster, has less debris in it. It is thinner, hotter, than the thicker A'A lava. It is called Pahoehoe lava. Land is cheap on the Big Island, for obvious reasons. the homes you saw, on Maui for instance, would be 600,000 to over a million each. I'm sure those homes, and land were under 500,000 each. As to why the grid? it is more profitable to buy a large piece, and plan it out so that maximum return is possible. the large tracts were usually ranch land. The lava will remain that way for thousands of years. The first growth often times are the Ohia trees. Which has a beautiful flower, Lehua. Noni, and ferns also grow. It can be as soon as 30 or 40 years, or much longer. Rain , wind, etc break the lava down, but it takes thousands of years. So you might own the land still, but it is pretty useless. Big Island also has one of the highest rates of ashma in the country. On Kona wind days(south winds) it reaches maui, and it is like LA on a really bad smog day. But it is sulphuric acid base, so it really plays hell with people.
Hawaii volcano destroys 21 homes, spews lava 200 feet in air By CALEB JONES, JENNIFER PELTZ and SOPHIA YAN Associated Press PAHOA, Hawaii — The number of homes destroyed by Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano jumped to 21 Sunday as scientists reported lava spewing more than 200 feet (61 meters) into the air.

Reading further, the third paragraph begins: Hawaii officials said the decimated homes were in the Leilani Estates subdivision....

I've walked over active lava tubes.
And, stood directly over where the tubes dump into the ocean. And, went back at night to really see the bright redness.
Anywho, will be staying on one of the islands w/o lava this X-mas.
That is surreal.
I wonder what this does for property prices.
Oh, man, that sucks. Someone lost a nice Mustang. Hope it's insured.
Some serious global warming there.....
Someone should have broken into the car and tried to hot-wire it.
If you had to choose, this is a much better type of eruption than a Strombolian one.
Fun Fact! Gollum wouldn't sink into the lava, he'd just float right on top and fry.

Truuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmpppppppppp!!!
Turns out, building a house on a volcanic rift probably wasn't a good idea.

Well, it is a hot market.
Shouldn't the government offer subsidized volcano insurance?
The can make millions of tourist-shop ashtrays out of that stuff.

That car was parked there deliberately for insurance claim purposes. I have seen the same thing in Galveston when a hurricane is roaring in.

Even if it is, technically, quite hot.
The cover image of the first clip is a mirror image of the actual footage. Why'd they do that? Was it so important to have the text on the left?
CNN is busy working on the Stormy Daniels angle of the Hawaiian lava flows...

Change "could be" to "is", and change the conjunction to "and"!!!
This is no different than parking your pick-up truck on the train tracks, but it is much more spectacular!
Either the Mustang owner was a world-class idjit to leave his car parked there, or he really wanted that insurance money.
Maybe the Mustang ran out of gas. I was waiting for the fuel tank to blow, but it didn't. Then again, if this is CNN, the car was probably fake.

My love's eruptin' like a red hot volcano
Fire, oh volcano, over you
I gotta lotta lava love locked up inside me

Knock you in the head
Kick you in the lava bed
Over you, hot lava

Keep it burnin' here at home
t's burnin' up in here
