"ABC cancels ‘Roseanne’ after its star, Roseanne Barr, went on a vitriolic and racist Twitter rant."

WaPo reports.
Barr appeared to take aim late Monday at Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Obama, in a tweet that identified the administration official by her initials: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj."...

The social-media rant wasn’t exactly a surprise performance by Barr, who regularly delights supporters of President Trump with her retweets of conservative memes and stories..... But even by her own standards, this latest round of tweets were particularly vitriolic. She started by spreading the false rumor that Chelsea Clinton is married to the nephew of billionaire liberal Democratic donor George Soros, who is a lightning rod for false conservative theories....

Barr later corrected herself, but added another insult. “CORRECTION: CHELSEA CLINTON IS NOT MARRIED TO A SOROS NEPHEW. HER HUSBAND IS THE SON OF A CORRUPT SENATOR, SO SORRY!” the comedian tweeted. (Fact check: Clinton’s father-in-law was convicted of financial fraud, but he was a member of the House, not the Senate.)...
A lot of people work on a show like that. It's sad that everyone can be sent packing when one nutty actor mouths off. Wasn't it the most popular sitcom on TV? Will it move to some other channel?

I feel sorry for Sara Gilbert:
Gilbert, who played Darlene on "Roseanne" and had been largely credited with spearheading the relaunch of the sitcom, tweeted that Barr's statements "do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show."

"I am disappointed in her actions to say the least," Gilbert continued. "This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love -- one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member."
I'll say what Gilbert is not saying: She just got her good work and her rising career shot to hell.

ADDED: "Darlene Is the Best Reason to Watch the New Rosanne."

You missed my point Mary Glynn. I am criticizing and lamenting that in so many cases apology is not even considered relevant or sufficient. I think civilized people accept sincere apologies, and it seems now not just OK but even admirable to refuse to accept apologies— as Jarrett did knowing she would not be criticized for it but rather praised for her “strong stand against racism”.

Barr has (I am quite sure) has done the opposite.

Darwin didn't say that the negro was descended from the monkey; he said all primates were descended from a common ancestor but the negro hadn't descended as far and was closest to gorilla and monkey relatives.

Here's Charles Darwin race in The Descent of Man

"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked (18. 'Anthropological Review,' April 1867, p. 236.), will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla."
https://charles-darwin.classic-literature.co.uk/the-descent-of-man/ebook-page-105.asp

Darwin is saying that the primate order is a chain from lowest to highest: Civilized races, savage races, gorilla. Among savage races, the negro and Australian are lowest and closest to the gorilla, said Darwin. They will die out and hence to intermarry is mix with a lower race, said Darwin. Segregation as we knew it in America was directly based on the belief that these statements by Darwin were "science", unimpeachable.

This led to years of insults and years of terrible laws and all of that is much closer in time than slavery. Actual laws based on those ideas were in effect when I was was growing up - segregation and anti-miscegenation laws. (My family was from the north and never supported any of it as idea or law.) People alive today lived under those laws in damaging, restrictive conditions. So this why you should never consider this type of joke as funny.

And really you shouldn't admire Darwin either. He has a lot to answer for.

What Gramsci did not consider was the prospect of a "long march" changing the ideological outlook of the upper class, but that the hegemony would then lose much of its power to influence the lower and middle.

I don't think Gramsci understood modern pop culture.

We all saw it when Princess Di was killed.

I remember reading at the time, or shortly after, how the British upper class was adopting the cultural mores of the lower classes, a new phenomenon.

This is what we have seen the past 20 years.

The surprise has been the upper classes realizing they are no longer respected.

The lower classes may not have had the money or education or "breeding" to be upper class but they knew it when they saw it.

It's been gone for a while.

That may well be. It may also be about your other observation. Jarret was a symbol of unqualified, divergent progress. When did Barr adopt Trump's lead?

PB&J,

That is an interesting question.
There was a large, underserved (much of it latent) market for material that is repugnant to the great and the good, and grossly violates publicly assered shared values.

And yet, the porno industry emerged to serve this market. Much of it (by earlier standards) of a sort that is backed by MSM broadcast entities and major advertisers. All the nudity and sex in HBO series for instance, would have shocked people forty years ago.

How does that happen?

The answer is that what is or is not repugnant and socially unacceptable is contingent.

I had high hopes for the RoseAnne reboot, and the first episode was pretty good. To call it pro-Trump would be an exaggeration, but after all the other anti-Trump shows on TV it seemed, well, refreshing. Almost balanced.

But almost immediately the show took a big SJW turn, which is why the ratings fell steadily through the spring. TV has done this repeatedly, use a conservative gloss to capture an audience for a show, then rapidly convert to an exposition of lefty talking points, week after week.

So I'm not upset by the cancellation. I already stopped watching. I don't think the tweet was a firing offense, and it would not have been if the left had not made such a huge deal out of it. People have said much worse things about Trump--on a daily basis--but that different. Because reasons.

******************************

Oh. So you're saying that blacks were so economically better off back in the 70's and 80's where all that red-lining supposedly took place? Do you seriously want to argue that blacks had it better then, and worse today?

Are you also arguing that "black flight" would have been good, while "white flight" was bad--even though whites were also fleeing murderous urban gangs?

And that by purportedly not being able to live in "better" neighborhoods, those well-off blacks, stuck where they were, were unable to take community action to keep those murderous black gangs out? Is that whitey's fault too?

And that the loosening of the mortgage financing laws, the look-the-other-way Liar's Loans that blacks got in order to help them get into the neighborhoods they wanted to live in (never mind whether they could afford them) didn't achieve anything?

Go ahead -- tell us what needs to be done differently today, that wasn't tried and failed over the past 40-odd years.

Anyone who approves (or disapproves) of the racist policy of ghettoizing black Americans into neighborhoods that the economically advantaged whites didn't want while keeping the ones they were in already "for themselves" should take note of "FullMoon" - who just completely justified the practice and blamed this denial of blacks of any upward mobility in their housing on them as a racial group.

Jews were also ghettoized in Europe, further contributing to their own stigmatization and oppression, as well.

Right-wingers should ask themselves about the degree to which they want to associate themselves with psychotic losers who approve of housing segregation policies and not get rightly called out as racist. Amazing that the Supreme Court did away with segregation on the basis of "separate but equal" not passing muster more than 60 years ago while these psychopaths go on about how segregation in housing availability was apparently according to them a perfectly acceptable practice.

It's nagging to listen to a kid having a temper tantrum amongst adults discussing how to help another kid just because the first one feels too jealous to allow it. It's obnoxious. I won't stand for it and will call her selfish, loser ass out for it every time.

Wow, PP is here winning friends and influencing people again, I see. I note that his attacks on black ghettos seem to have missed the point that said Black ghettos with their rapes etc are all Democrat policies.

I guarantee you I've spent more time in black ghettos that he has. I've lived in projects with constant gunfire at night; bullet holes in my apartment walls. I spent months working all day every day with people in the inner cities. I dealt with the crack addicts, the baby mamas; the society where only women owned or rented houses or row homes, and the men just floated from one girl to the next--no home, no job, nothing.

PP thinks that's all wonderful, I'm sure. But it was his party that destroyed the fundamental values of the black family; his side that proclaimed that all of the problems of the blacks were white people's fault. His side taught the blacks to reject personal responsibility and live on welfare and, bluntly, sin. From Planned Parenthood targeting blacks for abortion to Democrats preaching that it's all whitey's fault so don't do anything but whine and complain and take that welfare because you are owed it to Democrat run rap culture devaluing women and glorifying violence.... the left has done a number on blacks. It's "Acting white" to succeed in school; to get a job and get married and support your wife and children. PP's party is directly responsible for it. Back in the day, Democrats owned slaves, until Republicans ended that bit. Now, Democrats still own the blacks and do everything possible to prevent them from escaping the plantations.

Oh, and I'll bet that PP laughs hysterically at "The Book of Mormon Musical" and it's totally offensive, bigoted attacks on Mormons. But hey, that's different--when a target is rightwing, nothing is too vile, racist, or bad to say or do. Chop off a Republican's head? Shoot them? Put a crucifix in urine? Burn a Bible? PP approves it! Call Condoleezza Rice a monkey; Justice Thomas a "House nigger"--PP is down, man! They are Republicans, so you can't be racist against them! Republicans aren't people.... Ritmo makes that clear. Just like Goebbels will tell you Jews aren't people, so it's not a crime to do whatever you want against them..... Ritmo says the same about Republicans and Conservatives.

There is probably more to this story than what you are seeing on the surface. I didn't watch any of the new episodes other than certain clips of the one that Ms. Althouse blogged that one time, but my impression was that there was a lot of unhappiness at ABC about the story lines Ms. Barr seems to have approved. I am willing to bet there was a lot of pressure being applied for her change the direction of the show for the next season, and she decided to blow it up herself by forcing the cancellation.

I don't think any other network is likely to pick it up, but we will see.

Vance said...

Inga, it's a harsh truth but you must face it: the Democrat party is directly responsible for the vast, vast majority of problems facing the black community. Rage all you want, but it's the stone cold truth. The inherent racism in the left is obvious and deep. Heck, the sole reason for most policies you preach is your racist self.

Yes, you are racist. By that I mean you primarily judge people by the color of their skin, not the content of their character. Blacks are helpless peons who must be saved by noble Democrats from evil Republicans who--Gasp!--want them to take responsibility for their own lives, not blame whitey. Affirmative Action is explicitly racist by its own terms, yet you promote it. Heck, the entire concept of "Protected classes" based on race is, well, racist. What makes a black or indian better than me, such that said minority has more legal rights than I do? Nothing but racist arguments, that's what. "Blacks are inferior, that's why we must give them help to match the white man!" Voting reform? You guys scream that blacks cannot get an id. Really? How... racist of you.

Ritmo's here blathering about how blacks aren't responsible for anything and it's all white Republican's fault. No, it's not. Blacks have far, far more opportunity and privilege than almost any group in history--better health care, opportunities, available schooling and knowledge--yet they don't use it. Certainly they have more than say, some poor farmer crossing the plains looking for a homestead int the 1850's.

So why don't they have success? It's because of Democrat policies and attacks on black culture. Teaching them to wait for a handout; that they aren't responsible, and a towering sense of false oppression. It's not racist, it's cultural--that's the reason the blacks are in such poor shape. Same thing with Palestinians and Jews: Racially speaking, they are quite close. But Palestinians are leftists at heart--no work ethic, no personal responsibility, blame everything on someone else. And their society is violent and poor. Jews figured out that no one else would take care of them except themselves. And they turned a desert into a paradise.

My ancestors were kicked out of places with barely the clothes on their backs, and exiled to a desert. No one wanted us; in fact they sent troops to kill us. Your ancestors, Inga. Yet we made the desert blossom as the rose.

Kick out a bunch of millennial leftists into the wilderness and they'd be dead in 2 days. That's what leftist and Democrats have wrought.

It's not racist, it's cultural--that's the reason the blacks are in such poor shape.

The significant thing in all this that Inga and most white Democrats are totally unaware of is that this is a phenomenon of American blacks and not seen in blacks from Africa or even the West Indies. The latter also have a history of slavery but they were not burdened by a Democrats Party that assumes they are stupid and incapable without the white Democrats telling them what to do, especially how to vote.

Mostly it is American black culture.

The other consideration is that, aside from the violence, white British from north of London, especially the Midlands, have a similar cultural collapse. The common factor is welfare. In Britain, it is called the Dole.

Arguably the stupidest, most obliviously philistine comment ever made on this forum. Layers and layers and layers of stupidity and mindless destructive barbarism in two short sentences. A veritable mille-feuille of stupidity and philistine presentism.

Damn, y’all! There’s some hitting going on in this thread.

@chickelot @browndog. YES! What made Roseann suddenly go off on Valerie Jarrett, who was instantly and apparently correctly identified by the initials “vj”? It’s a Hound of the Baskervilles moment. There is a dog that’s not barking just yet.

Valerie Jarret merits an end-to-end colonoscopy. Something about that situation is not right. O is so dependent on her that she lives with them? Karl Rove may have been called Bush's Brain, but did he move in with the family in Midland? Someone like CTH should drill down and see what there is to see with her.

And I maintain that her face is trés evocative of the 70s PotA makeup, unless you prefer to liken her physiognomy to an insect's. Barr cut too deep, is all. Hope the cast are all protected by contract and get paid.

similar cultural collapse. The common factor is welfare

Specifically perpetual welfare or smoothing functions, which are profitable for the redistributors, spiritually destructive for the receivers, and financially progressive -- as in debt -- and economically liberal -- as in divergent -- for everyone else.

Some of us knew who Rosanne was the entire time and this latest stunt changes nothing.

She's a loudmouth bitch. Always has been. Always will be.

From the Rubin Report interview with Roseanne in 2016

Capitalism is on its deathbed. The solution is socialist solution. Such as stop lights, streets, and I believe healthcare. You pay your taxes to get something. In a decent socialist structure one receives healthcare or something for their taxes. Schools. They don’t turn around and pay their taxes and pay for school too! This is (What we have is) national socialism. I don’t like that one. That’s not a good system. Because it’s based on vampire capitalism. And that’s what’s dying and it should die. Stop trying to prop it up. It’s supposed to die because it doesn’t work. When they say free markets, they mean free markets for slavers. It doesn’t matter which one of them wins, it’s the same bullshit, a duopolistic fundraising arm of the prison military industrial complex. Brexit was the hero’s cry, the rebel yell and I love it.

BLM — I have black teenage males in my family. What’s going on with them is true and real. It happens too often. It happens to Hispanics too. They’re locked up hand over fist.

Q: so how do we get some smart people—?
A: You don’t. You have me that’s it. That’s all there fuckin is and I’m tired of people not seeing that.

Fake leftists are fuckin anti union. I’m an old socialist. Everything is a labor issue that can be solved.

If Trump wins, the only good part you know is it’s gonna be so great for comedy. I mean, the jokes will write themselves. I think laughing is good for the country. They don’t have no Obama jokes - people whisper them. Few of them are funny. Some are funny.

(At the end, she talks about peace through meditation to get rid of the programming or bullshit.)

My argument is the value of the human beings in the neighborhood determines the quality.

"The value of the human beings in the neighborhood."

Just think about that phrase that rolled off of "FullMoon's" tongue, everybody. "The value of the human beings in the neighborhood."

So IOW he thinks that in more destitute or violent neighborhoods the people aren't worth very much - financially, and therefore morally.

THere's your right-wing social catastrophe in the making. He downgrade the "value" of people based on the desirability of their neighborhood. They have less worth to him.

Sara Gilbert should have shown a little class. Something like "I've known Roseanne almost my entire life and I have never known her to be racist in all those years, but what she said was hurtful and I certainly can understand people being upset by it. Roseanne has apologized and I hope Valerie Jarrett will accept the apology. I wish ABC had given us the opportunity to invite Valerie to be on the show and we really could have made it a learning opportunity."
