Mrs. Barbara Bush has died. What treasure she was.

I've put up a new post for discussion of the death of Barbara Bush.

Please use this post for anything else, notably Lady Bird Johnson.

Potential buyers of FiveThirtyEight were told it was losing about $6 million annually on revenue of about $3 million, according to one person familiar with the sale discussions. A person close to ESPN said the company doesn’t break out FiveThirtyEight’s financials separately and believes the site has been valuable to ESPN as a whole.

So they’ll make it up in volume...

If they don’t make money it makes one wonder why it’s still around? Some other motivation?

Ontario has wildflowers too.

Book "Ontario Weeds" by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food has the list.

Lady Bird was an interesting woman. Lyndon was terrible to her all through their marriage. Caro's boom is filled with anecdotes of his crudities to her.

She was also an awful mother to her girls who were often baby sat by staffers when Lady Bird went out to her husband's affairs.

He continued his affair with Helen Gahagan Douglas until she went back to California.

Caro's book, of course.

Lady Bird, a wonderful woman, especially to put up with her husband. I’ve been in Austin during bluebonnet season, beautiful. What a legacy she left Texas.

Rouhani, Erdogan, and Putin meets to discuss matters of mutual interest, and Assad is not invited.
Trump bombs downtown Damascus, and Russian and Iranian anti-missile defenses are not activated.
Putin sends message to the Arab League suggesting that maybe everybody in the ME can get together and work something out peacefully.

I think Trump maybe is doing all right with Middle East diplomacy, but needs to work on keeping Nikki Haley up to date on breaking events. Maybe they could use soundproof booths with secure phone lines like Pruitt's.

Things also seem to look up in the East with President Moon and The Fat Kid talking about a peace treaty. Uncle Xi must have spoken quite forcefully to the Kid?

Maybe Trump's crude and simple minded diplomacy is doing all right here too?

SCOTUS is considering whether online businesses should be required to collect local sales taxes and forward them to -- whom?

Amazon and Walmart might be able handle this, but it would not be cheap even for them, and the complexity would presumably kill just about every smaller business.

Could a compromise be worked out so that only the state portion of the sales taxes was collected? 50 states and the territories with tax rates set and published annually would be manageable, while keeping track of every local government changing their rates when they feel like it would be impossible for any reasonably sized firm. Not to mention which address is in which jurisdiction.

But SCOTUS can hardly go there, can they?
And Congress would not be much better. If Congress start legislating about state taxes, the screams about states' rights would be deafening, to put it mildly,no?

Lady Bird did a nice job beautifying the shores of the Potomac. Didn't she also push keeping billboards at a distance from the interstates?

Over 68 years we saw Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush2, and Obama stay dug In waiting on a restart to a going war with NorthKoreans. That was 816 months. But in 15 months Trump ended it in a cost less victory.

Stable genius is a stable super leader too.

If this is for real at all, Xi and Trump are looking to defuse the situation - not "victory."
They just don't want The Fat Kid playing with matches and causing an explosion that burns them.

I'm sure there would be screams about state's rights from people who care about their own private interests, but not from people who care about the Constitution. Arranging for the payment of sales tax for goods shipped across state lines seems to be the quintessential regulation of commerce among the several states.

But yes, the proper way to regulate that is a difficult issue. And while it would be difficult for a small to mid-sized business to deal with that on their own, it would be fairly easy for FedEx or UPS to offer that as a service for any goods they ship.

What?
Variable postage charges, and the USPS or UPS/FedEx knocks on your door and tries to collect?
Or you buy online, but do not know what the bill is until the package is on the way and the seller knows what it was charged for postage and charges you accordingly?
Good luck with that!

How about the seller charges a set amount, based on what they expect average sales taxes to be, then pays the state/municipality the specific amount after the fact?

I don't believe businesses are required to itemize the sales tax out on their receipt/invoice for the customer, they're just required to pay the government a certain percentage of what they collect.
