"You fight for your country and they call you racist. But the days when those kind of insults work is over."

"You recall the evening of the American election, the traditional medias were shocked. They could never have believed that the Americans had finally voted in their own interests.... The establishment media are the dogs of the system. Every day, we become stronger and they become weaker. Let them call you racists, xenophobes or whatever else, wear these like a medal.... God bless America and vive la France."

So said Steve Bannon at a conference of Marine Le Pen’s National Front in Lille, France, The Guardian reports.

Marine Le Pen is estranged from her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, who founded the party, but he's quoted in the article:
“I think Bannon’s OK … but it’s not exactly the definition of de-demonising [the party] and it’s a bit of a paradox given that Steve Bannon was supposed to be Trump’s most radical adviser,” he said. “But who knows. She [Marine] may end up coming round to my way of thinking.”
The Guardian says Jean-Marie was "thrown out of the party for xenophobic and racist comments," so I'm inferring that "my way of thinking" means leaning into the kind of rhetoric that got the party demonized in the first place.  Let them call you racists, xenophobes or whatever else, wear these like a medal...

AND: Here's yesterday's post about Steve Bannon's mission in Europe.

Think what you may about Steve Bannon, but he makes too very important points.

1. “The establishment media are the dogs of the system.” Watch CNN or MSNBC for any 15 minutes during the day (if you can stand it) and you will see wild speculation, lies, gossip and pure advocacy. Worse than dogs. More like jackals or hyenas.

2. The charge of racism is the last refuge of the scoundrel. How does one defend against it? Who can see into another’s heart and mind? This charge is frequently used without any basis in fact and really shows how desperate the Left is. They’ve got little on Trump so it is racism, sexism and catting about. Allegedly. The Left is all about tribalism and global warming.

One is not a racist because one wants to enforce our laws and keep our borders.

Is he aware that a majority of Americans voted for Clinton, and that the Republic was saved only by a quirk in its 18th Century Constitution, a quirk insisted on by the small states that did not want to be dominated by the large states?

The majority voted against their own interests. That shows the effectiveness of the brain-washing programs in our public schools and universities.

I think that Jean-Marie sort of missed the point.

Bannon wasn't advocating racism or being a racist. He was simply saying that we cannot let the Left Mau-Mau or otherwise intimidate or shut down honest, factual speech with spurious charges of racism. If we cringe and go fetal every time the Left throws the R word at us, we're toast. That doesn't mean one should be an actual racist.

It all depends on who does the calling. The accusation is mostly on the lips of the enemies of democracy and freedom, ergo the charge has become a badge of honor. Being the chosen enemy of "Antifa" is a good thing.

The Left has a similar playbook in France as the US.

1. Allow massive influx of unskilled foreigners into your country - not to assimilate, but to provide cheap labor.

2. Do nothing about the inevitable social friction and crime, because multiculturalism trumps all.

3. Label anyone who objects as a "racist."

Rinse, wash, repeat.

I don't think the point eluded him. It's just that for people like Le Pen père, making everything all about himself and what he thinks and what he wants *is* the point. "Enough about the topic at hand, let's talk about me". The press is more than happy to oblige.

I taught at a large urban university for several years.

At one of our faculty meetings, our Campus Director brought up the uncomfortable fact that, although most of our students were black, most of our faculty were white. She the followed up with this (paraphrased):

Don't worry about being called a racist. Almost every member of our faculty has been called racist at one time or another, including me. All it means is that you did something that someone didn't like - like giving them the grade that they deserved. Just continue to do your job in a fair and professional manner and we have your back.

She was a very smart lady. I only got called a racist once. It was for giving someone the grade that they deserved. She had my back.

Aunty Trump: Watch the video if you doubt that there is a crazy guy in Seattle who supports Trump, people.

Guys, you really need to find a better talking-points source. Lame and desperate is no way to participate in the political fray. If you want to win you're going to have to find a better strategy than airing your private support-group therapy sessions in public. You want to persuade people who don't already agree with you. Consoling each other with carefully-curated prog-chum that normal people with broader perspectives don't give a shit about is not a step toward that goal.

Unless your goal really is just wanking. In which case, get a room.

If you think your “freedom” isn’t inextricably linked to the resources that make up your (and everyone else in the country’s) quality of life, then you’ve never read a history book. Never understood one, anyway.

mockturtle said...

Cracker is also correct. While I agree with all that Cookie asserts above, I believe, unlike Cookie, that these things are not necessarily negative and are probably essential. History has shown the the world has always been controlled by a few major powers. This will never change and the US needs to be one of those powers.

That's another way of saying that our freedom is dependent on helping the already bloated corporate entities feed on as much of the world's wealth as they/we can grab. Nonsense. If you haven't noticed, we're objectively less free than we were 40 years ago, and a domestic police state is being implemented in the name of "saving" our freedom.

This is a planet with finite resources. If we continue to wage war under the pretense of "fighting for our freedom," while really trying to gain advantage over every other country in the world, we are going to fight ourselves into another world war. (We've already started it on a small scale...in the hinterlands, so to speak.)

Rather, we should be working cooperatively with other countries to find solutions to the problems that every nation and all peoples face, to avoid ecological and military cataclysm.

What you fail to understand, Mock, is that by the standards of the Left, you *are* a racist. Your DNA test proves it. By denying the charge, you accept its validity. You are joining the mob. "I am one of you! The *real* racist is Jupiter! He doesn't even deny it!"

Le Pen understands this. The French have a song, "The animal is very bad. When attacked, it defends itself!" The animal is racist.

Robert Cook said...

"I remember when vagrancy was a crime and there were curfews."

Vagrancy still is a crime in some places, officially or unofficially. Today, however, an unarmed vagrant (or even a non-vagrant) can be shot down by a police officer if the vagrant (or non-vagrant) doesn't respond quickly enough or in he right way, or if the officer "feels threatened" by him.

When police serve warrants today, as often as not, rather than appear at the door and knock, a SWAT team smashes in unannounced with weapons drawn, often in the dead of night. To "protect themselves" the armored SWAT officers often shoot down any pet dogs they encounter in their violent invasions of private homes.

You spectacularly missed the point, Bob. Ask the average American what freedom means and I’ll happily bet that watching what he wants to watch, eating what he wants to eat, and driving where he wants to drive, will have more to do with his answer than anything in the Bill of Rights. And clearly you, to some degree, share this mindset or we wouldn’t even be communicating like this. The stupidest phrase a Leftist ever uttered is, “No Blood for Oil”.
And, frankly, complaining about the intrusiveness of government is bizarre coming from someone who’s been an apologist for the totalitarian Left in these pages. I agree that government is far to intrusive but, Jesus, strive for some ideological consistency.

I'm not sure that's accurate. Cookie often employs the rhetoric of the Left, but only to critique the status quo. I think Cookie is pretty much against the status quo, whatever it is, and believes that all governments are tyrannical scams. At least, I don't recall his ever saying a good word about any actual, existing government. He doesn't climb out on the anarchist limb, but neither is he willing to specify what form of government he would support. This enables him to criticize the behavior of all governments on moral grounds, without having to defend any government on practical grounds.

The greatest political problem America faces is California. When, in recent political history, has single-party domination ever been a good thing? I can cited several bad examples: Jim Crow south dominated by Dems; urban mayoral politics dominated by Dems; In Mexico there was the PRI. Of course in communist and fascist states, there is single-party hegemony.

The single-party style of government established at the state level In California must be opposed, lest it spread to the rest of the nation.

I think all government can become tyrannical scams, but I think government can work well. I sure hope so, because in any society of humans numbering more than two, government of some kind is necessary. It can be government that dictates to the people how to live, believe, and behave, or it can be a government where the people decide through proxies (their representatives) how they will live, behave, and believe, and how the problems of society should be addressed. When government is captured by tyrants or by greed-mongers, the people are not served. To the extent our government serves corporate interests, it is in the hands of greed-mongers, and our interests are not served by corporate interests.

"Cookie is an idealist, bless his heart. ;-) So far as freedom goes, I really can't think of a country with more freedom than we have. Certainly none in Europe nor Asia. I've never been to Africa. Maybe they exemplify freedom there."

It's not about whether we are "better" or "more free" than any other country (or all of them)--however "better" may be quantified. It's about whether we are as good as we can be and should be, whether we live up to our stated ideals. My criticizing another country is pointless, as I am not a citizen of another country, but of this country. I want the country I live in to be better and to live up to our purported ideals. When our country speaks of "freedom and justice" but perpetrates mass murder and torture in our greed-wars abroad, and when we support tyrants abroad, and when we abuse our own citizens at home, it is scant comfort to say, "Well...we're better than all the other shithole countries on the planet!" (This is a meaningless claim, as there are so many aspects of any country--good and bad--that one can factor in when making the appraisal, and what may seem "good" or "bad" or important or unimportant to some observers may be seen in the reverse by other observers. On many data points--child mortality, life expectancy, standard of living, etc., America is not at the top of the list of countries in the world, and is pretty low on some...on the 2015 W.H.O. ranking of countries by life expectancy, America comes in at 31, just above Cuba at 32.)

Robert Cook said...

"But we were talking about freedom, were we not?"

Well, that's one of the data points that makes up the whole pie of a country. If many of the other metrics are sub-standard, what good does "freedom" do us? And, what does "freedom" mean? How do you know we're more "free" than any other country in the world? By what metric? Perhaps we are, but I don't take is as a given. As long as Americans are being put into bankruptcy through medical costs--even people who have insurance--we can't really say we're "free," can we?

One catastrophic injury or illness can plunge a hard-working American into financial ruin. The "choices" available to someone in financial ruin are considerably limited.

Robert Cook said...

"If you’re able to complain about living in a police state, then you really aren’t living in one."

You're assuming all police states are alike. We're not like police states run by strongmen such as Stalin or Pinochet or Mao, etc., where criticism of the state is taken as criticism of "dear leader," which cannot be tolerated. Here, our complaints don't bother anyone, because they don't care, they just ignore the complaints. They get mad when someone reveals their dirty secrets, or gets in the way of them getting rich, or otherwise materially impeding their ability to do what they want. We're just the rabble, and even mass protests effect no change in the status quo; what's someone griping on a blog. Just someone emitting digital hot air.

However, this police that that you think isn't incarcerates more people in sheer numbers and as a percentage of our population than any other country in the world. And this is not because all our prisoners are violent monsters and dangers to society. (Some are, of course.)
