Why is a "Holocaust denier poised to claim GOP nomination in Illinois race for Congress"?

Here's the article in the Chicago Sun Times.

The answer is not that the GOP is skewing Nazi. It's that there's a district in Chicago that's so irretrievably Democratic that no serious Republican candidate will run, and this weirdo is the only Republican candidate. So he'll get the nomination. Arthur Jones is one of these perennial candidates, running repeatedly, with no hope of winning. He's run in this district in 7 elections, and he ran for Milwaukee mayor way back in 1976.
“Well first of all, I’m running for Congress not the chancellor of Germany. All right. To me the Holocaust is what I said it is: It’s an international extortion racket,” Jones told the Chicago Sun-Times.... “And given the fact that I’ve got no opposition in the primary, OK, I win that one (the primary) by default all right,” Jones said during an interview in a coffee shop in Lyons....

Jones told the Sun-Times he is a former leader of the American Nazi Party and now heads a group called the America First Committee. “Membership in this organization is open to any white American citizen of European, non-Jewish descent,” he said.
Should this be used against the Republican Party? Sure, if you're into taking whatever comes your way and incorporating it into ruthless propaganda for your party. Ironically, that would be Naziish.

I would bet that denial of, or indifference to, the Holocaust, is very common in large swathes of the more “urban” areas of Chicago. Maybe this guy would have more luck running for governor.

"Should this be used against the Republican Party?" Is anyone doing that? The article seemed pretty even-handed, made it clear that Republicans aren't supporting him. More of a curiosity.

We are quickly coming to a time where, in areas with majority POC/immigrant electorates, the Democrats can run blatantly anti-Semitic candidates. Ten years or less, I’d happily bet.

@traditionalguy, are you proposing that the GOP assassinate Jones? Because there is no legal way to stop him from filing as a candidate.

I might note that Jones is fringe candidate, meanwhile a hardcore antisemite is the Deputy Chairman of the Democrat National Committee. Says a lot about the newspapers that that little tidbit is buried while the fringe candidate is front and center.

Exactly my impression as well.

Is there a Republican Derangement Syndrome Derangement Syndrome tag?

I'll certainly admit, that the Republicans need to be extra careful in today's general media and social climate. Large elements of the media love to caricature Republicans as retrograde, racist, tycoons, etc. We can't afford many Roy Moores, Todd Akins, Steve Bannons, etc. The party has had a pretty good record of shutting those people down in the past; but obviously it has become more of a problem in, say, the last two years and perhaps that is what Althouse was trying to express without saying so explicitly.

It does not matter. Something will be found, and made much of, exaggerated into some critical controversy.

You are not dealing with an independent press but with a coordinated propaganda system.

I am a broken record on this, but it does not change this fact. You cannot avoid the propaganda machine by denying it material. It has an infinity of material. In fact by going along with the machine you are being herded by it.

You can only
a. Create an equal and opposite propaganda machine.
b. Destroy or at least credibly threaten the owners of the propaganda machine.

I don't know what to say. Because I don't know what you are saying. Akin and Moore won primaries. To the horror of the people who are mostly responsible for paying the Republican Party's bills, and getting more Republicans elected. And they both lost; the lost winnable races.

Akin probably gave us 12 more years of Claire McAskill, and another (D) Senate vote. And Roy Moore did the unthinkable; he turned Crimson Alabama blue for a statewide election.

In both cases, almost exactly as Mitch McConnell predicted.

There is a portion of the Republican primary electorate, in many places, that needs to wake up and learn a few lessons. They have had enough of them.

And this isn't an "establishment GOP" thing, and it isn't about rejecting Republican primary results. Case in point; Richard Mourdock in Indiana. Mourdock is a good man and deserved to win. He was hammered unfairly by a biased media, in large part spilling over from the idiot Akin. The Republican Party never requested Mourdock to relinquish his nomination.

The real GOP establishment opposition, is to shithole candidates.

But I doubt there is any logic at all to "diversity".

The RNC has plenty of cash on hand. They should try to recruit a normal person to run as well. That person would win the primary and thus diffuse the Communist Party line propaganda. Oft times the opposite. Mention them and get called an anti-semite.

The other day someone pointed out that the non-Jewish camps were not "death camps" because inmates were worked and starved to death slowly, over years. In real death camps people were murdered quickly and relatively humanely. (to the extent that murder can ever be humane) somehow, this perso seemed to think, this quickness made it worse.

I have lived in the Illinois 3rd District for many years. The Chicago Bears have a better chance of winning the Super Bowl next year than a Republican does to win the 3rd District. The incumbent - Daniel Lipinski, son of his predecessor William Lipinski - actually is not as far left as your average Democrat (he opposes public funding of abortions, for example). So of course he's facing a far-left challenger in the primary, which is unusual for him. But there is really no functioning GOP organization in the 3rd District and really not much of one in the state overall.

Big Mike said...

Both were horrible obscenities, but what that poster (Young Hegelian, I believe) was essentially true. Extermination camps were designed to kill huge numbers of people very quickly. Most Jews were only at Auschwitz a few hours, because they were sent directly to the gas chambers.

Gentiles were more likely to be worked to death in labor camps and yes, you can certainly argue that that was a more terrible, crueler death. But you had a slightly better chance at survival.

The Nazis had no problems killing Slavs, but exterminating the Jews was their top priority. After the Jews were extinct, they would have certainly continued to slaughter the Poles and other Slavs, so they could use their lands for the Greater Germany they envisioned. There is no doubt Nazi rule was more harsher and more terrifying in Poland for the average gentile than it was in, say, Vichy France. But the Jews were still their main target. The Nazis, thankfully, ran out of time.

Democrats want more people like Nazi's in our country.

And we don't say democrats are Nazi's. They are Stalinists. Stalinists and Nazi's totally get along most of the time.

Exiled,

I agree about the two types of death camps and the people who went into them. I think it is a distinction without a difference. Both camps were intended to kill all the inmates. One type quickly, the other slowly.

How much chance did one have of surviving the drawn-out death camps? If they had not been liberated by the allies, do you think anyone who went in would ever have gotten out alive? I doubt it. Everyone who went into either type camp was under a terminal sentence. Life without the possibility of parole.

My point yesterday, and for many years past is that we hear almost daily about the 6mm Jews murdered in the camps. We hear almost nothing about the 6mm non-Jews who were also murdered (albeit slowly, if that makes a difference) in the death camps. NEVER FORGET

At best, we hear about "some" or even occasionally "many" non-Jews murdered. Never about the massive, 6mm, number. Most people are surprised or dubious when I talk about it.

I say 6mm but it was not really. It was more like 5.5-5.7mm total. Just like the Jews were also in the 5.5-5.7mm range. 6mm is a rounded number in both cases and should be fine for most purposes. At that scale a few more or less hardly makes a difference in the horror.

One thing I am unclear of here is the relationship of Holocaust denial to being a National Socialist.

Many National Socialists are not deniers. Some think it was not done ruthlessly enough and there should have been more.

Some deniers are not National Socialists. Does the mere fact of denial make them so?

Besides the fact that the guy is a denier, what else is there about him that makes calling in a National Socialist ("NAZI") correct?

First time I ever heard of him was in this post and I don't care enough about it to look him up.

In general, it is hard for me to equate "Republicanism" with National Socialism. The two ideologies are pretty much diametrically opposed. It is far easier for me to equate the progressive ideology with National Socialism. Hardly a sliver of daylight between them. Look at the agenda of LaFollette's National Progressive Party of the 30s that copied the National Socialist party line almost word for word. Even down to the "Circumcised swastika" as the Wisconsin Historical Society calls it.

Then Hitler started invading other countries, National Socialism (and Fascism) went out of fashion in the US and the NPP disappeared. Perhaps that is why it is hard to find info on the NPP other than the WHS.

I will always be interested to hear any progressive explain how US progressivism is different from German National Socialism or Italian Fascism. Few even try.

This is muddled Ann at perhaps her worst. Her view is that the only reason Republicans are running a Nazi is that they have no one else to run. And no conscience, either.
