Why is Trump living in a bubble? Is there no one telling him that he may be screwing up his 2020 election (unless he knows that he won't run, if so, why is Pence not worried)?
Why is McMaster not giving him advice? Why is Haley or Mattis not telling him to get serious?
Example: Good he fired Price. Should he not stop playing golf or using govt. expenses? Why can't he force Jared back to NYC for using personal email?
Why is there no one who provides him with Honest/True/Perfect advice? Why are their his enablers, like Clintons? Does it mean when one is POTUS, everyone becomes your enablers regardless?
Perhaps, he knows that 2020 is the year of women - POTUS Warren/Harris, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Amy Klobacher/Warren (if not POTUS)
...an air traffic controller error sent him to his death.
The F-4 was a lot of airplane. Pilots think in three dimensions. Turning to avoid a mountain is kind of dumb when all you have to do is pull straight up while putting the throttles into afterburner.
That mountain was there for millions of years. It will be there after a million more years. Hitting it is unskilled.
Who ever gets over the death of a child? I don't see what is extraordinary about the depth of his experience. Isn't this the norm that you suffer for the rest of your life if your child dies, however he or she dies, whether by the mistake of another, the deliberate intent of another, his/her own deliberate choice, his/her own mistake, or some random bad luck, such as a falling rock or a lightning strike?
"That mountain was there for millions of years. It will be there after a million more years. Hitting it is unskilled."
Yes but the mountain was very close to the base, if you know southern California geography and my recollection is that he was sent the wrong way by the controller and his reaction time was not quick enough.
I know another pilot, the father of a friend, who was directed in error into a canyon north of LA and was killed. His family got a big settlement from somebody, maybe the ATC which might have been a local airport.
Martin was a National Guard pilot and may not have had as much flight time as a regular might have had.
I don't see what is extraordinary about the depth of his experience. Isn't this the norm that you suffer for the rest of your life if your child dies,
Agreed but Dean had a rather dramatic rapid decline from what I read afterward.
My favorite Dean Martin moment is after his trial for illegal possession of a firearm in LA (he started carrying an illegal gun after the murder of John Lennon). As he leaves the court room, there's a scruff of reporters around him shouting questions.
Reporter: " Mr. Martin, do you think everyone should be able to carry a gun?"
Martin: "No. Just me."
The reporters all laughed. If you ever see a film of this, Martin's comic timing is perfect.
I looked at some of the accident report. Evidently they were in the soup, which means they probably weren't in close formation. Usually, when you are in the soup you position yourself one mile in trail using the radar. This was a flight of three.
The leader asked ATC for permission to climb on top, as they were just boring holes in the sky, and not getting any training. ATC advised that they couldn't climb due to commercial traffic conflicting.
About this time, they suspect Dean experienced vertigo, and lost it. The ATC saw he was headed for the mountain and tried to contact them. They had descended 9,300 feet from where they started and slammed into the mountain.
I only experienced severe vertigo one time, and that was in a T-38 at night. It was quite a helpless feeling (nauseous). But you just have to trust your instruments, and not make any rapid changes.
Oh, one other final thought. Since they were in icing conditions, it could be that Dean lost instruments due to the pitot freezing over. Although, this would have been a malfunction, or he forgot to turn on the pitot heat, as the other two planes had no problems.
"Why is Trump living in a bubble? Is there no one telling him that he may be screwing up his 2020 election (unless he knows that he won't run, if so, why is Pence not worried)?"
Based on where things are now — with Trump and with the Democrats — I would extrapolate a win for Trump in 2020.
Dean Paul Martin was in a boy-band with Desi Arnaz, Jr, and Billy Hinsche back around the same time that Gary Lewis and the Playboys were active. One my judge how good (or bad) they were by searching YouTube for Dino Desi and Billy.
Althouse yesterday: Certainly, children's literature deserves analysis. It conveys values. It shapes young minds. Whether a particular book is actually racist (in some blatant or subtle ways) is a matter we will disagree about, but it's certainly a great topic of conversation, and it's a fine thing for Phipps Soeiro to use her moment in the spotlight to get the conversation started. I've had my suspicions about the Cat in the Hat myself (mostly that he seems to represent a child molester, bringing his special kind of fun to the house when the mother is away and successfully covering his traces and getting the kids to keep it all secret).
The Massachusetts school librarian who rejected Melania Trump’s book donation, saying Dr. Suess books are ‘steeped in racist propaganda’, dressed up as The Cat in the Hat two years ago.
How awful. You posted a hetero-normative song by a patriarchal oppressor as a PALATE-CLEANSER?
What next? Genocide? Wearing of MAGA hats? It's a good thing you have already retired, but if you can't be more careful, Those Who Want To Make Life Better For The Downtrodden may have to launch a petition to sequester your pension and divert it to grants for dating outreach for the non-cisgendered.
Tony Bennett's version of "Smile" might be slightly more allowable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7B2_RYZVjs
Evidently, in portraying the Cat in the Hat, Soeiro was not so adept at "successfully covering [her] traces and getting the kids to keep it all secret."
I met Dean Martin (and Johnny Carson) when they were smoking in a corridor outside of the Arie Crown Theater in McCormick Place, when I was leaving the Auto Show in the same building. It was 1970 or 71. I told them I was a big fan of both of them, and Johnny Carson told me to "Go fuck myself, I don't believe a Goddamn word you say." Dean Martin said something like "Slow down, Johnny. He's not one of those Vietnam protesters that were here before. (SDS types, I guessed) That's not an Army jacket he's wearing--and he looks like he's in high school (which I was). [Side note: Carson and Martin had been supporting US troops in Vietnam at that point, and America's involvement.] Martin shook my hand and said it was always nice to meet a fan, and asked questions about me. He seemed like a really nice guy. Carson continued to glare. I apologized for disturbing them before a show.
"Sway" is my current favorite among his songs. It's one of the many songs he made his own. If you don't see the magic in Martin, go back and do some looking. He was the real deal.
"The leader asked ATC for permission to climb on top, as they were just boring holes in the sky, and not getting any training. ATC advised that they couldn't climb due to commercial traffic conflicting."
I remember some of that. That base is on the approach to LAX. At night you see a row of landing lights all the way east as far as you can see.
"Johnny Carson told me to "Go fuck myself, I don't believe a Goddamn word you say."
This is why I would never, ever speak to a celebrity.
"He never got over the death of his son " On Yom Kippur , in a panel discussion, we heard from a parent whose son died very unexpectedly. The child passed out and died three days later - he had a brain tumor - angioblastoma I believe. The father talked about how his life changed and the sadness and grief and guilt he continues to feel, every day. He said it is not a matter of getting over the loss of a child but learning to move forward in spite of it, and that some people simply cannot find a way. He uses his terrible experience to help others who are going through the same thing. He reaches out to parents who have lost a child. I knew this man had lost a child but I did not realize that they had no idea his son was so ill before that incident. He is living every parent's worst nightmare.
Prof: I consider you an expert and so I will not disagree with your political assertion about Trump and the Democrats.
BUT, if I were a member of the Senate/House/Governor's Mansion dreaming of WH, I would be optimistic.
Why?
- Americans are tired/overwhelmed by Trump mistakes. People in private are embarrassed. (Trust me, we polled.) - Diversity is gaining ground - more women and minorities (African-American/Blacks, for example). - Immigrants will never vote for GOP (example, DACA relatives or Muslim American wannabes) - 2018 will be a test for 2020 turnout. Expect Media (led by NYT, CNN, WaPo, NPR) to actively/openly invite voters to talk to their outlets (basically GOTV operation). Success in 2018 will be doubled-or-tripled in 2020. - Expect more serious investigations on Trump and GOP and nothing in parallel for Dems (example, Warren, Harris, D. Patrick, A. Klobuchar, etc.)
Think today is October 2019 (two years ahead). What do you see the front page of NYT or WaPa? Trump is finished. He won't run. If he can see the 10/2019 NYT front-page, he must be having a nervous breakdown.
FYI: What if NK's Kim does something foolish. Voters will reject GOP in a heart-beat!
“Dean Paul Martin was in a boy-band with Desi Arnaz, Jr, and Billy Hinsche back around the same time that Gary Lewis and the Playboys were active. One my judge how good (or bad) they were by searching YouTube for Dino Desi and Billy.”
They had one song that got on the radio, “I’m a Fool.” I don’t remember any others, but they got a lot of articles in Tiger Beat and 16, which were the main two magaziines that covered rock music from the teen fan perspective. I read those with great passion, especially for coverage of Herman’s Hermits, The Monkees, and The Beatles.
I read a bio of him, and recall that it said his career reached a point where he had so much going on that the money was rolling in, day after day and didn't stop. TV records, movies, even books. It was awesome.
And he was wise enough to distance himself from Frank's mob pals, even though the relationship turned frosty. Haha what did he need Sinatra for anyway.
Thanks, Professor. I never tire of this song, which I have been listening to since I was a kid (growing up near you, in the Brookside neighborhood of Newark). If you can stand another video, someone set the song to Laurel and Hardy doing a dance in "Way Out West", and it really works quite well: Memories Are Made of This - Laurel & Hardy
Ann - re Herman and his pals, Peter Noone and Bob Dylan both have done radio shows, surprisingly Peter Noone's is much more interesting and heartfelt, at least that is the way I see it. It was really disappointing that Dylan though it was a good idea to do a show on "coffee". I get why he would do that, but, really? Who does he think he is , Jerry Seinfeld? Why not just do a radio show about things that are important to him without the "here is my show on coffee" shtick. I mean, who is he, Paul Lynde playing Uncle Arthur, full of passive-agressive observations?
I love Johnny Carson's public persona and choose to ignore the undoubtedly true reports that he was an asshole in real life.
I met Ed McMahon and quite the opposite, he was absolutely charming and gracious. I was a kid and we were having breakfast at Brennan's the morning that he was going to be king of Bacchus at Mardi Gras. We waited until his family had eaten their meal and then my sister and I approached for autographs, He invited us to sit at their table and chatted while he signed menus for us. My Dad was wearing a silver top hat (we were all in costumes) and that night when McMahon's float passed us he spotted Dad's hat in the crowd, pointed straight at us and heaped a pile of doubloons down at us.
