I knew a couple who had two hairless cats. They were the most hideous things imaginable.

In an animal that isn't currently endangering you, hideousness can be perceived as cuteness.

People love that annual ugliest dog contest. And it's usually won, I think, by a hairless (or mostly hairless) breed.
