Colbert mocks Maddow.

Good imitation!

Colbert should steer clear of the v-necks. It's not his thing. He also looks like a lot of older men when they age and become more strangely feminine-looking. Maybe he's had work done, but he doesn't seem the type. I think he looked better with the beard.

To add: I've always believed that comedy can't choose sides because comedy, in its best and purest form, is honesty.

That was good stuff. He did a better humor skit than SNL has done since their old Caribou Barbie days.

Humor is hard, and remember the saying that the one you cannot ridicule is the one who rules over you. Good news is that Madcow does not rule over NBC.

You know you've screwed up when the loyal tribe makes fun of you.

I didn't see the Maddow thing. Maybe that's why I didn't laugh.

Colbert never had a beard, or perhaps had one only briefly. You may be thinking of John Stewart.

Also, he typically dresses in shirt and tie and jacket. He was aping Rachel Maddow here.

Are we done discussing the tax return yet?

When I divide Trump's tax from line 63 by his income on line 22 I get an effective tax rate of 77. 6%.

The closed captioning shows "has been murder by Donald Trump" when he says, "has been heard by Donald Trump".

OK! That was funny.

NB: By taking the Alternative minimum tax route, his deductions become irrelevant. Now, and he need not show interest payments to his Friends, especially the ones with the oil wealth, Nuclear Missiles and -40F cold winters.

The only Maddow I have seen is election night. She goes from euphoric to severely depressed. Condensed tp ten minutes or so on you tube, should be used as example of bi-polarism. Colbert does exaggerate the mannerisms pretty good,

I suppose Maddow got a lot of new viewers with that 1040 broadcast, some who may stick around and raise her ratings, and value.

What would the liberals have Maddow do? Quash the story because it might benefit Trump? Credit her for letting the chips fall.

Drago said...

Yikes!

"lifelong republican" Chuck is not going to like that! Maddow is one of his key "go to" folks for incisive political commentary.

David: "What would the liberals have Maddow do? Quash the story because it might benefit Trump? Credit her for letting the chips fall."

Yes because those are the only 2 choices: quash the story OR pull a Geraldo/Al Capone Vault maneuver.

Nothing in between was possible.

Well played David.

FullMoon, if you have a link to the election-night Maddow meltdown, give?

He's doing an impersonation of a woman.

Colbert should steer clear unless he's going to treat all libs the same way (because they've all done really stupid things). His turn is coming.

I've never seen the person he's imitating so I don't have to watch it.

A woman who always seemed to me to be impersonating Stephen Colbert... or maybe Elvis Costello, not 100% sure.

Re. Above on AMT ... "taking the AMT route"?

When did AMT become optional?

Last I heard you either have to or cannot pay AMT, depending on your tax specifics.

Known Unknown said...

But Maddow is doing a quasi-impersonation of a man, so it's a very circular weird thing there.

Robert Cook, call your office!

Funny, Ann, I would have said that Colbert was doing a long-running, successful imitation of a man.

Eli Manning cutting a fart.

SNL should do a skit with Maddow, Brian Williams and Dan Rather breaking news.

Yancey Ward said...

Fullmoon,

The two minute video is fucking hilarious if you watch it after watching the 30 second one. The night of the election, Maddow had to have been sitting there and thinking about how she could ever show her face on television again.

I'll have to take his word for it. Maddow has always been horrible, and her utterly inane template of slightly bemused highbrow mocking irritates me to no end. Ugh.

I find her arched eyebrow most annoying. It's like watching a brain-damaged Mr. Spock.

Couldn't find my favorite, where she slowly descends into meloncholy. Cuts to a newsguy announcing that Trump has won a particular state, then back to Maddow saying don't worry, ain't gonna happen, Over, and over again- ends with the crying face. Not kidding, hilarious in kind of a "guy dives off rooftop, misses pool" sort of way. Being one not to enjoy another person;s misery (except ChucKs)
I avoid the head chopping, auto wreck, run over by train sort of things, so I didn't bookmark it.

The "scandal" is Trump's apparent advocacy for getting rid of the AMT. Without it, he "would have" only paid 5% (or something).

FullMoon's 30 sec. clip of Maddow is a reminder of how terribly wrong the pollsters were about this election . . . either that or the Russians really did hack all the voting machines AND all the paper ballots.

The Godfather said...

I should have said Maddow's 2 minute clip. The 30 second clip is just for fun.

Colbert has been on fire with all the political material available for satire these days. Nice to see him satirize liberals when they deserve it.

Drago said...

R/V: "Nice to see him satirize liberals when they deserve it."

Nice to see him satirize a liberal, once, when they deserved it.

Be sure to let us all know when he offers up satire on someone from the left a second time.

Something tells me he won't make it a habit.

Slightly OT, question for Trumpists: did DJT ever tout his massive tax payments? If not, how do we account for the Trump that didn't brag?

Bob Loblaw said...

Maddow's chin is more masculine.

Drago said...

Sebastian: "If not, how do we account for the Trump that didn't brag?"

This is no time for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle style theorizing.

MikeR said...

"What would the liberals have Maddow do? Quash the story because it might benefit Trump? Credit her for letting the chips fall." Are you suggesting that she went into this big buildup without ever seeing what was in the "tax return"? Boy was she disappointed!
I can't credit that she could have been that foolish.

rehajm said...

how do we account for the Trump that didn't brag?

A few possible explanations:

He was too busy
He did and you didn't notice
He didn't find his income brag worthy
He's smarter than advertised and accepted advice not to discuss his taxes
He's dumber than advertised and he doesn't know what taxes are/has trouble with numbers/forgot to brag about it

Quaestor said...

Althouse didn't get the metadata on that one.

Laugh it off. Damage control.

The Godfather said...

Asked above: Why didn't Trump boast about paying a lot of taxes? I recall that he said he paid a lot of taxes, but he boasted that he paid less in taxes than he might have had to pay if he hadn't been so smart. That's what he's proud of, and presumably he hoped the voters would like to have him bring those smarts to solving the nation's problems.

Blogger rehajm said...Are we done discussing the tax return yet? When I divide Trump's tax from line 63 by his income on line 22 I get an effective tax rate of 77. 6%.

The adjusted gross income (AGI)(the denominator) includes the regular loss carryforwards available to 2005 and was excluded since it isn't 2005 income. The AMT is computed in a separate system where certain deductions are not available or are based on different rules, even including a separate loss carryforward, and the higher of the two is the resulting tax liability.

So your percentage is "correct" based on AGI, but not on 2005 income.

rehajm said...

So your percentage is "correct" based on AGI, but not on 2005 income.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, but to the point: his effective tax rate for the year is and should be based on total income (or AGI), not on '2005 income' as you call it. Not even the IRS makes that distinction.

Also, were other presidents calculated using the same standards? Apples to apples?

rehajm said...

Since they didn't have his AMT details they must have extrapolated his AMT income, then made a guesstimate based on that?

Until they start mocking obama, the Clintons and faucahontas they're not really putting skin in the game.

"Slightly OT, question for Trumpists: did DJT ever tout his massive tax payments? If not, how do we account for the Trump that didn't brag?"

That's easy. This is the return where Trump paid the most and he leaked it on purpose knowing some lib would be really stupid and make him look good. The other returns are probably him pulling every shenanigan in the book and paying less.

Next question: Who cares?

Blogger rehajm said...Since they didn't have his AMT details they must have extrapolated his AMT income, then made a guesstimate based on that?

Looking at the 2005 AMT form for individuals, Trump would have had his ordinary income in a 28% AMT rate and his capital gains mostly at a 25% rate, so you could kind of back into his net AMT income by dividing his bottom line tax by .25 or .28 to see the range. But again the AMT world has its own net operating loss numbers and they are built into the AMT computation, and this was not released.

Looks like Maddow channeled Trump. Made a big deal out of nothing and beat all other cable news in viewers, her highest ever. Some will continue to watch, upping her importance and value.
