Tricking CPAC Trumpers to wave the Russian flag — What are the lessons?

Social media had great fun with something that happened yesterday at CPAC:
Jason Charter, 22, and Ryan Clayton, 36, passed out roughly 1,000 red, white, and blue flags, each bearing a gold-emblazoned “TRUMP” in the center, to an auditorium full of attendees waiting for President Trump to address the conference. Audience members waved the pennants—and took pictures with them—until CPAC staffers realized the trick: They were Russian flags.
What are the lessons?

1. There are lots of people out there who are not on your side. Withhold your trust until you know who you're dealing with. There are endless scams. Don't be a soft touch.

2. Young guys and their pranks lighten the grind of politics. It was fun back in the 60s when Yippies found cool ways to put across what were weighty political opinions, and it's fun now. We need our clowns, including the pranksters who figure out ways to offload the clownery onto others.

3. Don't pass on messages that others have handed you. Think of your own ideas. Let the words of your mouth and the gestures of your body come in a form shaped by your mind. Be original. Be yourself. Have a self that's worth being.

One of the lessons is that not all of us are as visually inclined as everyone else.

The French and British flags are also red, white, and blue. It's not patented by the USA.

That's not a lesson. That's an observation. What lessons can people learn from this? What should YOU do differently going forward?

Ann Althouse said...

Do you want to say: Don't laugh at others who take flags handed to them and wave them because maybe they are bad at understanding the meaning of flags?

I disagree. We should laugh at those people. And people need to wise up, not expect to be sympathized with when they do stupid things like that.

This is a very useful lesson. I have been thinking for a few days that I would like this blog even more if the commenters were not anonymous. Anonymity encourages a lack of civility and greatly facilitates propaganda operations by various political entities. Here we have a fair amount of incivility, and occasionally I think we are seeing purposeful propaganda posts. I think that decent people posting with good intent should not be afraid to be known.

I suspect the flag wavers didn't care. If Trump supporters had the luxury of being as literal as lefties they could point out it isn't a Russian flag since it had the word 'TRUMP' on it.

As a prank it was subversive and clever but they wrecked it by talking: We will continue doing these actions until Trump is impeached. That's not how the impeachment process works. That's how you get more Trump.

David Begley--"And this Russia story will never stop."

As Instapundit and Walter Russell Mead note this morning, it will stop as soon as the press realizes that Trump is engaged in a fairly aggressive, multi-faceted program to cut Russia down to size on the international stage, and then the press will flip to Trump is a dangerous, heedless war-monger dragging us towards WWIII with Russia. The flip will be accomplished without a warning or any acknowledgement that the narrative was ever different.

It's a good thing all these Lefties are reading "1984". Maybe they'll learn something for a change.

sane_voter said...

overall this reflects badly on CPAC that they would let anyone pass out stuff without knowing who/what they are. Also, the folks attending have some expectation that they are in a safe place with regards to this kind of activity and the mere act of someone passing out the flags in the auditorium implies they have authority and it is ok.

The flags weren't red, white, and blue, they were white, blue, and red. Or red, blue, and white depending on your angle. That may seem like a small thing, but it's not. They look off, they look wrong.

The American flag is a remarkably iconic symbol. There are many ways to represent it, there are even examples of flags that have no stars, no stripes, no red, no white, no blue, and yet they are still easily recognizable as Old Glory. But red and blue never appear together. White always comes between them.

I may not have recognized those flags as Russian flags, but I would have immediately spotted the problem and I'm disappointed in the CPAC crowd that they didn't.

The more the left loses elections the more violent they become since it becomes clear to the lefties that the populace simply requires more "persuasion" that leftist policies are the pathway to utopia.

Remember, there are no violence issues with muslims in Sweden and the Swedish government has already dropped its number for refugees to be admitted this year by a couple hundred thousand and government personnel are currently engaged in discussions about how to deal with all the issues....but remember, there are no issues! Hey, I can actually turn this into an interesting story for all of us, my enemies and admirers alike, and indeed nothing I have seen thus far in this thread more beautifully illustrates Ann Althouse's excellent blog post. Because she asked the exact, right question.

So yesterday, I heard this story in real time at the moment when no one had yet caught on to the fact that it was a brilliant troll-job. The way I heard it, the conference-goers were simply waving Russian flags. I had not heard that the name "Trump" had appeared on the flags. And so I heard someone -- I wish I could remember who -- exclaiming how bad things had gotten in the Trump era such that Russian flags would be waved at a convention of the American Conservative Union.

That news -- delivered orally and with no pictures and no follow-up -- very nearly caused me to 1) write an email to Ann Althouse suggesting that she follow up on that story and blog it; 2) put up my own comment in one of the "Café" posts, or; 3) both.

Had I taken the bait, I might have drawn Althouse into "dupe" phase of the story. I think I heard about the Russian flag-waving at lunchtime yesterday, and I did not hear about the "Trump" name on the custom flags, or the fact that everyone had been tricked into a pro-Russian demonstration until after dinnertime.

There was just something about the story that caused me to hold off at that vulnerable phase. I used my head; I didn't let that news direct my own thinking; I stuck to my own message(s).

All of the lessons that Althouse suggested be drawn from this incident.

Most of the people responding about how "stupid" the CPAC attendees were for not noticing the Russian flag would probably fall for the same trick. I suspect very few would already know and remember what the Russian flag looks like.
Just to review: flags with three horizontal stripes of red, white, and blue include the following (colors listed top to bottom): Netherlands - RWB, Luxembourg - RWB, Russia - WBR, Slovakia - WBR, Croatia - RWB, Serbia - RWB, Slovenia - WBR (the last 4 listed also have a crest or symbol). The old USSR flag would be easy to identify, the new Russian one - not so much.

n.n said...

the left does not do well with understanding stuff going on in other countries

They understand waging social justice (e.g. elective regimes changes, extrajudicial trials, forced refugee crises) is a first-order cause of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Immigration Reform (CAIR). It's not that they don't care. It's that the trail of tears, resurrecting dead Soviets (a la dead voters), and CAIR (e.g. demographic redistricting) are perceived as desirable outcomes by anti-native factions.

jaydub said...

Must be a really slow Saturday.

Who says they were waving a Russian flag with "Trump" on it? There are actually dozens of flags with variations of red, white and blue horizontal tribands. In fact, the addition of "Trump" in the middle makes it more like the current flags of Bydgoszcz, Slovakia, and Slovenia than Russia because those flags have other symbols superimposed on the basic white/red/blue triband, unlike Russia. BTW, the Russian flag is identical to that of the first Slovak Republic. Change the order of the tribands, and it's identical to Sorbs, Chile, the former Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Valledupar Columbia, the Republic of Srpska in Bosnia-Herzaegovina, the Netherlands, half the other slavic states and kingdoms that have ever existed.

It takes an incredible amount of smugness for anyone commenting on this stunt to claim he would have or should have thought the flags waived at CPAC were "Russian" flags because they are distinctly not Russian. It's more likely the CPAC flag wavers just thought they were honoring Melania by waving a modified Slovenian flag?

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil said...

They are not real up on historical timelines either. The Occupy Democrats sent out a tweet:

"Hitler had his Berlin Wall. Trump wants to build a wall. Is this really who we want to be president?"

Thus, they conveniently forget that it was the Communists who built the Berlin Wall, 16 years after old Adolf stuck a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

And that the obvious difference between the two walls is that the Communists were trying to keep people in, not out. (I've seen Dems using the stupid Berlin Wall analogy a dozen times on talk shows, and it's driving me crazy that no talking head, not even Tucker Carlson, has pointed out that basic fact.)
