It used to be the case where one could turn down the TV sound and turn up the local radio broadcast but now the timing is off.

It was actually pretty funny how much of a Homer Buck is for the Giants. Besides being smitten with how well Eli played in Green Bay a couple times, Buck started gushing about Giants dominance with 4 minutes left in the first quarter! It was kind of wonderful to see them building up such hope for *THEIR* team, noting how the "stats" really showed the Giants had such *CONTROL* over the game. The boys were giddy!

Of course the two tiny Giant field goals were soon eclipsed with one TD pass from Rogers. And from that point on the broadcast duo sounded a lot like MSNBC on election night. There was a brief flame of hope from Aikman when the Packers went for it on fourth down and -- could it be they would lose momentum by turning the ball over on downs? It could be... No, the Giants were never really in it again. So sad.

And then the dynastic duo started talking about Green Bay like they are a real threat in the off season. Amazing what three hours of cognitive dissonance will do to your sense of perspective.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

I meant "threat in the post-season." Oops.

There is no love for Joe Buck in Kansas City after the 2015 World Series. His incessent praise of Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, even in games he wasn't pitching, was like one big sloppy wet kiss.

TV announcers suck, especially Buck and Aikman. Yes, the timing is off listening to the radio and watching the TV with the sound off. You hear what happens before you see it on TV, but listening to the Packers announcers Wayne Larrivee and Larry McCarren is well worth it. In fact, it's nice to know what happens before you see it, because you can then look to see why the play developed the way it eventually did.

Jaq said...

If I were rooting for a franchise that has had two Hall of Fame QBs in a row, I can't figure out why I would care about the announcer.

Seemed fair to me--7 yards in the first quarter. About 30 yards halfway into the second? The Pack stunk for 20 minutes, then were great for 40 minutes.

Packer fans are delusional. Buck and Aikman gace three hours of verbal blowjobs to Rodgers and the gang.

@Begley

I often watch football with the sound off, drives my kids crazy. If there's a penalty that is not immediately obvious, then I hit mute (unmute) to listen to the refs. I wouldn't say I know as much about the game as Aikman (that would be dumb), but I (usually) know as much about the game as they discuss on TV.

It's odd to see this complaint about Buck and Aikman. As a Giants fan, it seems like most Giants' games are done by B/A and they are against the G-Men, galling to have a former Cowboys' QB doing so many Giants games.

Curious George said...

I mean they still call Green Bay title town. Since the merging of the AFL-NFL the Packers have just two championships. That's in 46 years. Two teams are tied with two. And eight teams have won more. Sorry, you're not "titletown" when you are tied for ninth in titles won with two other teams.

lonetown said...

Anyone remember when NBC aired a game with no announcers? I think it was around 1965 in response to complaints about how bad their game calling was.

AllenS said...

For those that don't listen to Wayne and Larry, Wayne has this little phrase that he uses when the Pack has put the game out of reach.

The dagger!

New York audiences demand loyalty to the home teams, the Yankees and the Giants. They would get fired if they were ever fair and balanced.

Scott Adams would understand these two. Everything they see confirms their bias.Sometimes you think they were eating or looking away at the Cheerleaders and have had to guess what they just saw.

But remember the referees before instant replay.

The only sports announcers I like are Al Michaels and Mike Tirico.

Buck doesn't like the Seahawks, either. Never has. My mother has always watched sports with the sound off because she can't stand the commentary. The only reason I don't is that I'm usually multitasking and don't want to miss anything.

Interesting. I watched the game and thought they did a great job. Aikman especially. He's very good at explaining what the QB sees and how he reacts (or fails to react.)

Yeah, Cub fans had he same beef in the World Series. That's likely a by-product of Bucks like association with the rival Cardinals.

Bob Ellison said...

Buck is not great. He affects a big-man voice that he can't quite reach.

But this problem happens in every sport, every time there are playoffs. You go from your "homer" local broadcaster to the national playoff talker, and suddenly you perceive bias against your local team. Buck has talked about that problem. It's a natural, unavoidable part of calling games in the playoffs.

I agree with David that Aikman is quite good at his current job. He was a darned good QB, too.

I usually mute the sound as I tire of the same old narratives about whomever the focus is for that section of the game, and frankly don't usually pay attention until the second half-because games are so long with so many commercials. I was glad to be able to watch the Badger Basketball game instead for much of the time, even though it was a touch go for them.

Bob Ellison said...

That was a great game, by the way. Reggie Jackson called himself "Mr. October" with good reason. Aaron Rodgers should be called "Mr. Second Half".

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Farmer: How ridiculous. Those guys aren't biased in favor of any team. Giants fans think the same thing about Buck, by the way - he's always against them.

What is ridiculous is Buck saying the Giants are *dominating* only 10 minutes into a 60-minute game. Especially when the alleged "dominance" can be reversed with a 90-second drive and TD. Buck could have used any number of descriptors throughout the game but he tends toward hyperbole. He's not alone in being a NY homer, but it's undeniable to anyone listening.

As I said, I find it humorous more than irritating. I lived through the Lindy Infante years and remember being ridiculed for being a Packer fan (especially in SoCal). An example. As the teams lined up after a 2nd down play Buck went on and on about how NY is the best at stopping 3rd downs and how the Packers are so weak at 3rd down conversion. As usual he went on about it, barely wrapping up in time to let Troy slip in "First down Packers" before the next play started. I laughed out loud. This same vignette replayed many times over the next sweet three hours. Buck sounded like all the overconfident HRC supporters in November with the same level of self awareness afterward.

Note to Curios George: We don't elect presidents via popular vote and you don't get to reset the championship clock at the AFL-NFL merger. Just because so many other teams came late to the league does not supersede the ELEVEN CHAMPIONSHIPS the Packers have won. And besides, winning the NFC North just gave us another divisional title.

Bushman of the Kohlrabi said...

I actually think Aikman does a pretty good job. I don't always agree with his opinions but I like his broadcasting style. Obviously the Packers and Cowboys were major rivals during his playing days so it was no surprise he was biased against Green Bay early on in his TV career. However, he's really toned it down in recent years. Since then I've heard him say many good things about the city, team, and organization and I no longer get the sense that he's actively rooting against the Packers.

Buck is competent if not stellar. I don't really notice him that much. It must mean he's doing an OK job.

I have a theory that all announcers suck, especially the 'color' men. This is because in reality there is not that much to be said about a game the audience is watching just like they are. Occasionally a new guy will come on and I will think, hey this guy is interesting, but inevitably after a few games the newness wears off and he turns out to be just as tiresome as the rest of them.

It goes with my theory that while athletes may or may not be the brightest people in the world, they always sound dumb because most of the questions they are asked are so stupid. "Tell us about that touchdown pass you caught in the third quarter" "Well, I ran down the field got open and when the QB threw me the ball I caught it" How do answer a question ike that without sounding dense? I say you can't.

Did you really use the word "richness" twice in a football post. BTW, if you look at my post I used the word "still", intentionally. My point is that Green Bay is far from "Titletown" in the modern era. They are ninth in titles won. But you keep hanging on to that rich history of shit that happened before you were born. LOL Tell Patriot and Steeler fans how Green Bay is "Titletown". Tell 'em how awesome Curley Lambeau was...after you explain WHO he was.

As far as the Packers being the "greatest team in pro sports"...what a joke even if you look all-time. Like I said they are ninth in the NFL modern era. The best announcer pairing in football is/was Vern Lundquist and Gary Danielson. They both know football and are not afraid to call a bad play a bad play or vice versa. You can learn a lot from Danielson. The worst pairing is any one that includes John Gruden or Brent "Mushberger"in which no one makes a mistake, every player is super talented - except maybe on that last play- and we learn about every player's hometown and family life.

Aikman understandably is a Cowboy first, last and always and has trouble watching other teams play. Joe Buck's father was a revered announcer. Joe Buck never will be.

BTW the Giants WERE beating the shit out of the Packers in the first quarter and a half. If Cruz and Beckham he'd not dropped all those balls the game might well have been over at the half- as I recall Beckham dropped two TD balls. In the second half Eli was Eli and Aaron woke up and that was all she wrote. If the Packers start the Dallas game the same way they did NY the game will truly be over by the half.

I wonder though if it's accurate to go by Super Bowl wins alone. Suppose for the sake of example we were looking at just the period 1990-2003, we'd have to say that the Bucs were a better team over that period than the Bills because they won one Super Bowl and the Bills won none. However, in that period the Bills won four straight AFC championships.

Or take season by season--I'd say the most dominant team in one season in this century would have to be the 2007 Patriots, as they not only won every game (save for the Super Bowl) but won many of them by big margins. Yet, that elusive Super Bowl kept them from a perfect season!

Wayne is maybe the best radio PxP in football. He did the Bears games prior. McCarren not so much.

victory over the Nowheresville Whogivesafucks! It's so rich, that history!

Don't know why you are so personally vulgar about the subject, and to me sexual allusions are really misplaced in discussing football.

Yeah the NFL has a rich history that predates the Super Bowl, thankfully much of it recorded by the Sabol organization and narrated by the great John Facenda. Many teams from the era survived. Too bad you have a monomaniacal focus on recent history that precludes you from appreciating the big picture. They don't call the Bears-Packers as the "greatest rivalry in sports" because of the post-1970 games. They add to the story, but there's much more. Business majors study Pete Rozelle's tenure as a model for building a brand. But I guess we should just look at what he did after 1970 to really see the man for what he was?

He has a log up his butt about Wisconsin sports teams. Don't know where the hate comes from, but it is strong.

Is there a petition to call for the removal of Packer game broadcasts?

who-knew says: I have a theory that all announcers suck, especially the 'color' men. This is because in reality there is not that much to be said about a game the audience is watching just like they are. Occasionally a new guy will come on and I will think, hey this guy is interesting, but inevitably after a few games the newness wears off and he turns out to be just as tiresome as the rest of them.

The only 'color' commentator I really enjoyed was John Madden. He knew all phases of the game but emphasized defensive play. I learned a lot from his observations.

Giants dropped more balls than the Vienna Boys Choir(tm).
You have to give me credit if you ever use that line.

What is there no love for the Pottsville Maroons? They won an NFL title (1925?) that
was denied them because they played a game in a stadium outside their approved territory. The second-place team refused the title because they didn't feel they earned it, so there was no NFL champ that year.

Had 49er season tix from 1978 to 2007. I don't believe that there was a better time or place to be a football fan than SF in the 80s and 90s.
And no worse plave now. And, yes I am aware of Cleveland.

Let me clear up a couple points. Buck and Troy are the big corporate voices of authority the network loves. They are OK since most announcers suck. The best NFL color guy is Chris Collinsworth, that is if you want a highlight of each off-ball linchpin moments of a play that resulted in success or failure. I can understand anyone whom has never played the game would not like CC's "mansplaining".

The Packers looked like they were going down until the end of the first half. I'm not a big fan of the Giants receiving corps, so was glad to see that their choking was their Achilles heal.

The Packers are not America's team, the Raiders are. The Packers are Trump's America team.

Aaron Rogers is great for a lot of reasons, the first is not his arm, but his footwork. He's the most exciting QB in the game. I don't think the Packers have enough players around Rogers to defeat the Cowboys, Americas least favorite team.

I want to gouge my eyes out whenever I hear Cris Collingsworth, so NBC broadcasts are out.

He is an insufferable, prissy sycophant for the league and refs, but wouldn't you be better off driving knitting needles into your ears in order not to hear him?

Birches said...

Haha, you're right, Marc.

And I hate Collingsworth, not because he mansplains football, but because he thinks every player reminds him of a young so and so and I usually don't think the comparison works as well as he does. He also makes one of the most annoying guffaws I've ever heard. I'm guessing he gets quite a bit of phlegm up every time he does it.

Not to get into a fight about who's better than who or what year's matter, but a comment. I think Free Agency changed the NFL completely (not necessarily for the better). I think the "modern era" dates from the beginning of free agency not from the combination of the leagues - the 60's -80's were kind of the middle ages of the NFL. The challenge of building and maintaining success in the NFL today is very different from when Lombardi was running the Packers. Can you imagine the value Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, Fuzzy Thurston, Max McGee, or Ray Nitschke- to name a few- would have add on the free agent market? There is no way Lombardi could have kept those 60's teams together with free agency.

I'd throw in salary caps, revenue sharing and public subsidizing of stadiums. It equalizes the chances of less well-funded teams, and makes it harder for most teams to stay great year after year (look at how neither of last year's Super Bowl contenders even made the playoffs). Kind of makes the Patriots' ability to dominate for so many years these days more impressive.

I think Packer fans are hearing what they want to hear. I watched the game and didn't detect any favoritism. Of course, I'm a Bronco fan so perhaps I wouldn't notice but I recall a bunch of Bronco fans tried to get Phil Simms off of broadcasting their games because of his apparent anti-Bronco bias. But I never heard or detected that either.

It's like the fans that see holding and pass interference all the time against their team and then think the refs are purposely calling the game against them.

Go Cowboys! ;)

The phlegmatic guy and Phil Simms are so much better! Simms is great. I was hoping for the Giants to win - guess that partying in Fla didn't help. The dynamic duo often cover the Eastern conference perhaps that accounts for the bias.

Next year, Tide. RTR.

Anyone remember when NBC aired a game with no announcers? I think it was around 1965 in response to complaints about how bad their game calling was.

It happened again in the 80s or 90s (can't speak for 1965). It was such a great thing to do!

I saw the game and the comments were absolutely fair, in my opinion: the Giants dominated the first quarter and a half (what can you say when the Packers make 7 yards?), then the Packs prevailed (and Rodgers was amazing); Buck and Aikman's words reflected just that.

In general, compared with what I'm used to hear in Italy (for soccer games), I find that American comments are exceptionally fair and calm.

I rewatched the game this evening. I hadn't noticed it live, but I can see a case being made that Buck and Aikman were biased to the Giants. I think it's a pretty weak case, but not completely outlandish.

Regarding those who don't think the Giants were dominating the Packers in the beginning, half way through the 2nd quarter the Packers had 7 yards of TOTAL offense.

And to whoever it was upthread who opined that McCarthy is a mediocre coach, he is tied with Belicheck for the active streak of most consecutive playoff appearances (eight).

WTF? I watched the game for the first time tonight and didn't notice the announcers' "bias" at all. (I've no dog in the fight, being a Bostonian.)

During the first half, UNTIL the Hail Mary, the Packers' offensive game DID suck. But so did the Giants, with NO successful conversions and NO touchdowns.

But after that, it was a different story. How many passes did the Giants drop?

Unless and until someone fisks the announcer comments to make the case, I call bullshit.

And an especially offensive bullshit, since the Packers won the freakin game! With the announcers congratulating them for it.

Methinks it's all the cheese: rots yer brains.

I remember that one too: it's why I've never been back to my father's grave.

Another one, from that same benighted era: "I don't PAY you to think!", shouted by an employee at his underling, in the movies.

Though they won't admit it, HR departments dealing with Manufacuring employees still follow that rule.
