"Esten Ciboro told the court his Bible is 'the only law book that truly matters' and that 'there’s a great deal of strategy in Scripture' that he uses in every facet of his life...."

Ciboro, 28, is on trial along with his father, for imprisoning a 13-year-old relative in their basement and raping her for years.
Last Friday, the court granted the pair’s request to bring a Bible into the courtroom as reference for their defense....

Human monsters quote scripture too.

They should have used the Islam defense and brought in a Koran. Christianity and a Bible. They're fucked.

I guess they forgot to read Leviticus.

I'm sure the Christians on the jury will totally buy into the interpretation of the Bible as presented by these two nut jobs.

A biblical punishment would be appropriate then.

"And a man who injures his countryman – as he has done, so it shall be done to him [namely,] fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Just as he has injured a person, so it shall be done to him." (Lev. 24:19–21)

In the good old days these guys would be hung before the month was out. Sadly today both will still be around ten years from now.

Who believes that either of these monsters should ever be released into the public again?

Carefully selective reading will always get you to any desired result - some do the NYT, some the Bible.

What possible verse in the Bible could they have found to premise their argument on?

Not suggesting they would be interpreting it well, just wondering where they could start the evil bullshit.

Ann Althouse said...

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment." (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

Deuteronomy 20:10-14)

"As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you."

I notice this story was filed under the Yahoo! Celebrity rubric. This is always a sign that what follows will be rich in sensation and poor in relevant facts, such as the name of the judge who has set himself up for an appeals court rebuke.

Whenever a link goes to Yahoo! News Quaestor regrets there is no Houyhnhnm News.

What's your game here AA. Do you want to show the Bible is an evil book? Do you want the Bible banished? Do you want to abolish religion? What's your game??????????????????

No God, no justice. Pro-Choice is not a viable defense.

No God, no justice.

Plato advanced a theory of justice that did not rely on gods. In The Republic Glaucon says that justice is the will of the gods and quickly gets into trouble. Is the deed just because God wills it, or does God will the deed because it is just, asks Socrates. Glaucon can't answer the question and admits his theory is bollocks. Socrates explains that justice is innate; we all understand what is just for the same reason that we all understand equality, i.e. equality in the mathematical sense. Though no two things in nature are equal — no two trees, no two pebbles, no two clouds, whatever you wish — we humans can conceive of equality even if we never perceive it in nature.

I'm not sure why this is blog-worthy. If the judge had ruled they could not bring a Bible into court, that would be blog-worthy, or if he had said that he will instruct the jury to apply the Law of the Old Testament, instead of the law of Ohio in deciding this case, that would have been blog-worthy. As it is, this is a case about allegations of truly terrible actions, and we should remember that they are only allegations.

Can/can't bring a Bible to court? What the hell do they swear in the witnesses with?

As for your quoting scripture for your own purposes, Ann, is there a problem with those passages? Something you take exception to?

Also, I'm not a Christian, but doesn't Jesus talk about Earthly justice as a woman's unclean rag? Maybe you resent that too. Certainly not much is nastier than old menstrual blood.

But if you want some Earthly law someone might cock a snook at, well, go dig up that bit by Justice Taney about how slaves aren't people. Put that in your Godless pipe and smoke it!

Oh and Plato's Republic wasn't so hot either.

Quaestor:

I think that each individual is endowed with a moral center constructed on "principles" that vary with nature and nurture; and because we recognize [individual] diversity, we do not seek equality, but rather reconciliation.

That said, I wrote "No God, no justice" in the context of scriptural interpretation. While the Hebrew text and religion are not living, lest they mutate and become something alien, they are interpreted in context, notably the superior guidance of God or God's representatives. I believe the consensus is that guidance is no longer forthcoming, or readily perceived, but the philosophy and faith persist.

Kim Davis would certainly agree.

Perhaps the judge is thinking, sure I'll let them do that and dig themselves a deeper hole as they try to justify themselves from the Bible.

Also I want a book, chapter, and verse citation where Jesus says earthly justice is as a menstruous rag.

I know menstruous rag is in the Bible, and I often quote Esther, "I abhor it as a monstrous rag!" And that's why they don't let me teach the children at church.

I say the punishment should be one of those Biblical punishments: stoning.

Great scene to bring it to life for you - but watch the full movie for the outrageous context.

K-Liz! Hey, beautiful!

I don't have chapter and verse. Stephen Maturin makes the reference, in Latin and in English, but I cheated on whether it was Gospel or Scripture. After dinner I will go find you the Patrick O'Brian piece and tell you the Latin he used, maybe that will help.

Bad Lieutenant said...

Nothing do I know of the law at all. But I do remember that the Bible likens human justice to a woman’s unclean rag—quasi pannus menstruate—and I have little faith in truth as an immediate safeguard, in this world.

These two were living in Ohio, but I suspect they were raised in a slave owning culture. But the Slave Dealers have all been gone since Lincoln sent Sherman south with an Army of midwestern farmers to take Atlanta, get Reelected and Amend the Constitution.

So the cowards enslaved their own family members so they could live a lazy life served by slaves.

Permission to do that is not in Christian Scripture. But you can read it in the Quran.
