"As the opening title cards, laid over an educational map of Africa, prepared us for action set during the second Liberian Civil War in 2003, a second set of title cards in a more lyrical italicized font flashed onscreen, comparing that crisis with the vicious tribal rebellion in South Sudan a decade later, and that conflict to 'the brutality of impossible love shared by a man' — fade to black, wait for it — '… and a woman.' There was a millisecond pause for shock before much of the audience burst out laughing."

Wrong category. It's a comedy.
Sean Penn is old news. Or no news.
It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
Is "Sean Bean" pronounced "Seen Been" or "Shawn Bhawn"?
The best Sean Penn movie scene is in "The Falcon and the Snowman", in which the Mexico City police beat him up with a phone book. Good times.
I don't get it.
Penn is a (unattractive) hate magnet.
I don't understand why he even shows his stuff, when it is custom made for those DVD dollar barrels at walmart.
What a loser.
Now that's funny.
There must be a backstory everybody knows that would make it intelligible.
I've seen Theron in 5 DVDs and don't see that she has anything to have an ego about, but maybe she's acting. She's in my list of unrecognizeable stars.
'the brutality of impossible love shared by a man' — fade to black, wait for it — '… and a woman.'
Still not over and rehashing his marriage to Madonna?
"My Mother", by Jack Byrnes. You gave me life / You gave me milk / You gave me courage / Your name was Angela / The angel from Heaven / But you were also an angel of God / And He needed you, too / Selfishly I tried to keep you here / While the cancer ate away your organs, / Like an unstoppable rebel force.
It's impossible to make a meaningful movie about the Liberian civil war. Prince Johnson, who now sits in the Liberian Senate, taped the torture death of the Liberian President. Hollywood film makers have no handy narrative to dramatize such evil. Perhaps if the story were set in Westeros,,.,,,,
When you've lost Cannes...
If you want to do this subject right -
Beasts of no nation, Fukunaga, with Idris Elba

She was brilliant in Arrested Development, but maybe she *wasn't* acting.
Say! It's 2016! The brutality of an impossible love could have been shared by a man...
and a man.
and a boy.
and a robot.
and a sheep.
and a camel.
and several women.
I leave it to Laszlo and Titus to fill in the rest.
taped the torture death of the Liberian President.
Death by boola boola?
...also starring Javier Bardem and Jean Reno. What a waste of talent.
Ms. Theron showed some chops in "Young Adult", "Head in the Clouds" and "Mad Max Fury Road". And who can forget the catfight with Teri Hatcher in "Two Days in,the Valley"?

That was MSGT Samuel Doe who did the torturing, wunnit?
No, furious, Doe got the chop, literally, from forces under one Prince Johnson.
Poor Sean Penn. At this point my reaction is usually something like, "Bless his heart." Something you'd say about an uncle with dementia.
Charlize realized it just in time and hit the eject button. I had to look up what "ghosting" meant when I read what she did to him.
ps (Mad Max Fury Road was Best Picture, don't let anyone tell you otherwise)
sean penn's work as an actor is fine. i guess we don't like his politics or something? who cares?
i assume 'you never go full retard' (tropic thunder) was about him in 'i am sam', which in my more naive days was just pure+touching. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0277027/
Sean Penn can't tell the diffence between mass savage atrocity and interpersonal angst? That explains a lot about Sean Penn.
Humanitarian help in Katrina. Isn't that where he hired a small boat to carry himself, a videographer and some water to those in need, and the boat sank?
Might have worked better for all concerned if it were just the boat, the pilot and the supplies. But where is the (ego boosting) fun in that.
Ah well, next up Fun Time in Venezuela, a love story between a woman and....... a roll of toilet tissue.
Move to the rotting socialist paradise that is Venezuela, Sean - or STFU and die.
