ME: "I would bet $500 that Trump is going to win Ohio."

MEADE: "Oh, yeah. Especially now that Mitt Romney is there campaigning for Kasich."

(Conversation just now at Meadhouse. I was looking at the 2 new polls today, which both show Kasich and Trump in a tie, after weeks of polls showing Kasich ahead.)

ADDED: I am not actually taking bets here, please note. No betting is occurring through this website. But by the way, did you notice....

Rose represents underhanded dealings but those who feel the resonance Trump is trying to set off remember when he helped Cincinnati win. They like to win. And Trump's message is: We don't win anymore. Get back to greatness. Rose symbolizes greatness. Trump is allying with the overall message embodied in Rose.

Trump needs a power hitter. Rose, like Cobb, Gwynn, and Ichiro, didn't drive the ball. They hit too many singles. Trump needs a Bonds endorsement.

How fitting, that the vaguely criminal Pete Rose is for Trump, while the revered OSU head coach Urban Meyer is for Kasich.

Is Pete Rose even an Ohio resident/voter!

Go read Rose's Wikipedia page. His numbers don't seem real. I'm supposed to hate him because he took out my shortstop, Bud Harrelson, with a cheap slide and then a shove after the play, but I actually LOVE the guy. How is he not in the Hall of Fame?

Geez--Palin, Pete Rose, Christie, Ben Carson--Trump sure has the dregs of endorsements. It says something that each of them are controversial and consider themselves victims of unfair criticism--there's something in that that makes one feel affinity with Trump. The Kardashian endorsement should be next.

The ones to watch will be the "Vichy Republican" endorsements from establishment figures who decide to go along to get along. When the Bushes or Romney or McCain endorses him, that'll be the signal for the GOP to get in line.

They can replace the coach with Michael Sam

Pete Rose, like so many all time great MLB players, missed the big payday. Mediocre players of today are making 10X or more what Rose made. Rose always a 'hustler' augmented his income by charging for autographs - like every other star that could. He did not claim the income. IRS went after him and a few others for tax evasion. No one was reporting that money as income. Not condoning it, just reporting what happened.

Chuck said...

I called Rose a "quasi-criminal" in my post above; I was writing fast, and trying not to be unfair to Rose. In fact, Rose was convicted of tax fraud, served five months in the federal prison in Marion, was fined $50,000, was required to perform 1,000 hours of community service, and was ordered to pay $366,041 in back taxes.

The tax charges grew out of the investigation of Rose's illegal gambling; the undeclared income related to memorabilia and autograph sales, and winnings on horse racing.

Thank you, Wikipedia.

I don't know who I would vote for if I lived in Ohio. I think Kasich would be the safer choice as President, but voting for him would not offer the deep emotional satisfaction of pulling the lever for Trump. Voting for Trump is like taking off the cast and finally scratching an itch that's been driving you crazy.........I think Kasich is a prudent and experienced man and could credibly say those BOMFOG cliches that allow us pretend that we're a unified country. His lack of charisma is a plus in my book.. On the other hand, a vote for Kasich is a vote for all those anti-white bigots who think Trump represents all that's wrong with America..........This is somewhat related. I've read some revisionist accounts of Ty Cobb. In the context of his time and place, Ty Cobb was actually a racial moderate and was supportive of Jackie Robinson. He was a successful businessman, and there were people who liked him. The picture of him as a bitter misanthrope was drawn by one writer, and the meme was picked up by all the others.

But what do you think of the odds of Bernie Sanders winning Florida?

The polls have got to be wrong. There's no way Bernie Sanders could be doing worse in Florida than in North Carolina. Only about 10% of Florida is in the deep south.

Sanders is now winning Hispanics, and in Michigan, he got about 30% of the black vote, instead of about 15% (of course there he impressed some people as making good statements about Flint, so there was regression toward toward the mean, and maybe teh regression toward the mean hasn't taken place in south Florida.)

Of course, there's a lot of old people in Florida, and we don't have some teenagers and college kids asking their grandmothers and grandfathers to vote for Bernard Sanders like others did for Obama (8 years later it wouldn't be the same people) - but I'm not sure how much that affected things in 2008, anyway.

If you mean by "amnesty" not supporting Trump's Operation Wetback then yes, Kasich is not changing his position. Kasich, as far as I know, has never advocated rounding up and deporting the 11 million (or more) foreign nationals residing in the U.S. in violation of U.S. immigration laws. Whether that's a winning or losing position among Ohio Republican primary voters, maybe we'll find out tomorrow.

Cruz, it's sort of hard to tell. When asked about deporting, Cruz responds oleaginously, talking about border enforcement and being on the side of Jeff Sessions rather than the side of Reid and Schumer and hiring more border agents and the like and never quite getting to actually answering the question at hand. What would President Cruz do about the 11 million (or so) living in the U.S. in violation of the law? We don't know.

The New York Post today has polls on page 4.

It shows Kasich getting 39% in Ohio to Trump's 33% (with 19% for Cruz and 6% for Rubio - total 97%) This is an NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll released Sunday. And I think the trend is with Kasich for that state.

Interesting that nobody ever uses the term "favorite son" any more.

In Florida the same poll shows Trump at 43%, Rubio at 22% Cruz at 21% and Kasich at 9% - total 95%.

North Carolina (which is as proportional as you can get) a Civitas poll released Friday shows Trump at 32%, Cruz at 26% and Rubio and Kasich both at 11% (total 80%)

In Illinois (15 delegates winner take all by statewide vote, and 54 delgates (3 per Congressional district) elected individually by name, with the candidate they are pledged to listed next to their name the same NBC News/WSJ/Marist poll as was used for Florida and Ohio gives 34% for Trump, 25% for Cruz 21% for Kasich and 16% for Rubio. Tota1 96%

Missouri were it is winner take all statewide (12 delegates) and 40 winner take all by congressional district (5 per CD) theer is a Ft Hays State Unoversity poll from Friday that shows 36% for Trump, 29% for Cruz, 9% for Rubio and 8% for Kasich. Total; 82%.

Rubio seems stronger than Kasich except where Kasich has campaigned or near where he has campainewd (mainly New Hampshire, Michigan and Ohio)

there was another view of the tape that came out, and it doesnt' suggest that Trumps campaign manager did in fact violently throw her down. she never loses her footing. It looks like he pulls her back and keeps walking. I'm not even sure if he realizes that he hurt her in any way. Its more of a "get out of the way" type shove.
So this whole he said/she said might be a Rashomon type scenario where both sides see something that might be true but neither side is actually in the right. The way Michelle said it, she was thrown to the ground. This video suggests otherwise:

https://youtu.be/6NoMPxomjiw

I'm not going to say she is a liar, because he did seem to grab her and move her out of the way. But he didn't "Throw her down". I thought that meant she fell to the floor. He moves her out of the way. There's a difference

Florida: Clinton 61%, Sanders 34% (total 95%)

Illinois: Clinton 51%, Sanders 45% (total 96%)

The Civitas poll in North Caroina gives: Clinton, 57% Sanders 28% (total 85%)

The Fort Hays poll in Missouri gives: Clinton, 47%, Sanders 40% (total 87%)

That's a pretty apt description of Rose and a pretty apt characterization of a lot (though not all) of Trump voters.

My brother, whom I see rarely, was visiting this weekend and we talked about the sad turn the Republican party seems to be taking. He has been voting since 1968 and I since 1972 and neither of us has ever voted for a Democrat. I asked him if there was any opponent who could get him to vote for Trump. Rubio vs Clinton: 50% to 47%
Cruz vs. Clinton: 49% to 48%
Trump vs. Clinton: 44% to 52% - loses

Sanders vs Trump: 55% to 43%
Sanders vs. Rubio: 53% to 45%
Sanders vs Cruz 57% to 40% (!)

Sanders beats Cruz by a bigger margin than Clinton beats Trump.

Sorry you doubt it. Spring training is just that, spring training. Teams invite many players, they play split squads, meaning the half the team plays a home game, half the team travels to an away game. Lots of 7 inning double headers and people playing everywhere, especially guys trying to make the 25 man or the 40 man roster. Coaches like to find out if a guy can catch a fly ball. You’d be surprised at the number of players who can’t. It’s not something you want to find out in a regular season game. So, yes, I do believe that Pete Rose would have seen some outfield time in spring training. I spent many years following my nephew who played professional ball for 8 years. He heard the Pete Rose story many years ago years ago.

I googled the origin of the Charlie Hustle nickname. It doesn't seem clear what the real answer is, but I did see a number of links that suggested it was when he ran out a walk in spring training, and Whitey Ford mockingly gave him the nickname for that. It is correct that he began his major league career at 2B, but i don't think it rules out the possibility that he might have played the outfield at all in spring training, if one wants to make the case for the outfield hustle story being the origin. He did spend an inning or two in the outfield his rookie season, according to Baseball Reference, for whatever that's worth. His switch to the outfield happened when Tommy Helms became the regular 2B, I gathered.

Both sides here have major impetus to lie through their teeth. I'm way past the point where I think someone would bribe a reporter to set up a fail for Trump; I think "dirty tricks" against Trump are & have been in play for some time now. I can also imagine the Trump side using another press setting where Fields was moved aside nicely in place of the one where she was manhandled. The few innings his rookie year were likely due to a extra inning game when odd placement of payers defensively becomes necessary because of pinch hitters and double switches. Again, I doubt he would have played the outfield in Spring Training when the Reds were bringing him up to play second.

That said, I would bet a dollar on the running out a walk to first story over the chasing the Mantle moonshot story even if he was an outfielder in the beginning. The running to first on a walk was his signature. I'd like to think I would have heard the Mantle moonshot story if that was it, because I went through that period in youth where I tried to soak up as much baseball trivia as I could.

Pete Rose did play some outfield in the minors and would end up in the outfield eventually. It would not be unusual to try out a rookie in the outfield in spring training to see how he does out there.

I am also under the impression that Rose was not a particularly good defensive second baseman or third baseman, though he was a good defensive outfielder. Whether he was an "OK I can live with it" infielder or a "he hits so well that I don't care that he's terrible" infielder has never been clear to me.

There is no definitive version of the "Charlie Hustle" origin. It is possible that there were multiple incidents. Pete Rose may not even know, given the nickname was given by others.

Static Ping said...

As to Rose playing mostly second base in the minors, usually minor league prospects are put in the most challenging defensive position they can play. Assuming the same level of offense, a second baseman is more valuable that an outfielder which is more valuable than a first baseman. Pete wouldn't be moved off second base to play left field unless it became obvious he was no infielder. Given that he was allowed to play second base on the major league level for years, he was at least adequate there.

You will notice that in the baseball draft, there are lots and lots of shortstops and not many second basemen. Teams assume that if the kid had to play second base in high school, that meant he was not good enough to play shortstop, which makes it much more likely he won't stick at second base either. Second basemen tend to be failed shortstops.

@Michael K. I don't know if this is indicative of potential polling for the general election, but looking on Real Clear Politics at actual results versus polling in recent contests, Trump has often slightly underperformed, while Cruz has often significantly overperformed.

(sarcastically) "Vote for Trump, the choice of self-destructive compulsive gamblers! Yay!"

That should be: "Vote for Trump, the choice of American (U.S. citizen) rule and law breakers who pick their targets. Yay!"

Theer never was a "bradley effect" It's just that Republicans had a lower tendency to answer polls.

Hell man, now that Kasich wants all illegals to be citizens, yep.. Trump will win.

Thats actually the position of a majoroty pf the public and even of Republicans.

(it's just that republicans are in this logic trap of wanting this to be the last amnesty and so to end all illegal immigration first, which, of course, can never happen.

Kasich joked about building a wall between Ohio and Michigan.

Hey, Meade, thanks for the response. I think you're probably right about arose (I definitely agree with your profile of him) but it still seems to me his endorsement might get a few old timers to tip Trump's way. I know if Bobby Knight did so, my fellow Hoosiers would be more inclined to vote for Trump.

@Beldar: "the man is mentally ill, and has some of the most spectacularly bad judgment ever displayed in the sporting world."

I think you may be forgetting a certain Mr. Denny McLain.

I'm hearing lots of union members are switching registration to GOP so they can vote Trump. Why else would Trump go to Youngstown at very short notice?

The video of his rally is pretty cool. It is held in an aircraft hanger and he arrives in his 757, walks down the gangway and straight onto the stage, along with Chris Christie. Skip to the 43 minute mark.

Reading the comments, I am impressed by how irrational and personal most of the anti-Trump stuff is.

That strikes me as odd because he has provided a huge wealth of things to criticize, but people here seem to be just emotionally venting.
