"A few readers have expressed doubt about the orgasm-inducing mushroom I mentioned yesterday.... None of our readers have, as far as I know, sniffed the mushroom, but they do know their way around Snopes, and they have kindly provided a link to the site's page, which says the mushroom's orgasmic power is UNPROVEN...."
Unproven doesn't mean disproven.

Orgasm mushrooms? So licking of toads for hallucinations is now out of fashion?
Keeping up with fads is getting to be real work.
What am I gonna do with all these toads?
Unproven doesn't mean disproven
The mating call of the gullible.
Personally, I have anosmia.
Interesting Scientific Study: Can a person suffering from anosmia nevertheless achieve orgasm from sniffing Hawaiian Lava Mushroom.
Fresh mushrooms must be used, so the study has to be done in Hawaii.
Start grant-writing Althouse!!
Snopes may be good for a yes or no answer on very specific questions, but most of their answers on anything controversial tend toward tap dancing around true or false or voice of God certainty, depending on where the answer leaves their politics.
I don't even go there anymore except for laughs if a political question comes up. Let's see how they spin this, type of humor.
That being said, I prefer to live in a world where those mushrooms exist too, but if I were somehow forced to stake something I care about on the question, my answer might be different.
I wonder if anosmia blinds you to pheromones?
We prefer to live in a world where the orgasm-inducing Hawaiian lava mushroom is real.
I'm quite content living in a world where neither me nor my wife would ever have a use for such.
UNPROVEN / DISPROVEN
Takes me back to the Clinton impeachment and Arlen Spector.
"I'm quite content living in a world where neither me nor my wife would ever have a use for such."
That could also be read as: I prefer to live in a world where I am not replaced by a mushroom.
Becha' can't eat just one.
"I prefer to live in a world where I am not replaced by a mushroom."
Or a banana or a cucumber or any of the other members of the food groups.
Personally, I have anosmia.
If the lava mushroom has any possibility of producing a female orgasm it would be highly unlikely that having anosmia would make any difference.
UNPROVEN does not mean disproven
True. In the context of a Snopes.com article UNPROVEN usually means too valuable as click-bait to label as a FALSE.

"Unproven" when it comes to things that have been studied repeatedly is just polite statistician-speak for "bullshit."
E.g., "the link between autism and vaccines is unproven," "cold fusion is currently an unproven science," "the hypothesis that immigration does not lower wages for native workers is unproven."
"If the lava mushroom has any possibility of producing a female orgasm it would be highly unlikely that having anosmia would make any difference."
Why? The anosmia is a failure of a nerve in the nose that goes to the brain. Isn't that the pathway?
Unless you think that pheromones require the use of this neural pathway to have their intended effect upon the brain, no, it's not important. Think of it, professor, like you being frigid, but when you get f*****, you still get pregnant. You just didn't enjoy it.
