"Tina Fey Strips On 'The Late Show' In Honor Of David Letterman."

So... this is feminism these days?

By the way, does anyone even remember the trouble Letterman got into back in 2009?
But perhaps an exception should be made for a great late night talk show host. The funnyman's mood and ego need boosting. Just as he must have an office full of people who can write jokes and comic routines — who must share a lot of not-that-businesslike camaraderie — he needs pretty ladies to keep his senses well-honed. It's part of the structure of a business that revolves around a performer. The funnyman needs his supply of sex, and the paying career positions on the staff can be used to create a pool of potential sexual partners who will keep the old man bolstered up.

Having looked at that picture of Ms. Fey---on balance I wish she'd kept the rest of her clothes on.

Some things are best left to the imagination.

Feminism is nagging.

It's as much a female inclination as stripping is.

Stripping is nagging!

Fey gives "spanx" a bad name.

I haven't forgotten. But, just as with Bill Clinton (who was on the show night-before-last) nobody seems to care, because he's just so fucking wonderful, or something.

Feminism worked hard to earn its status of being a joke.

Drew Barrymore did it with panache.

Sure. It's not like she made him a sammich, or decided to stay home to raise her kids.

So women will still take their clothes off for a powerful old man even as he is giving up some power.

Because feminism.

Got it.

This is a link showing feminism in action.

Teen girl is oppressed, decides to sue parents and move in with boyfriend parents object to.

Teen cries after getting choked by said boyfriend, runs to the cops to file domestic abuse accusations.

That was a sight I would rather not have seen.

Sounds too boring to comment on...but I'll give it a try!

Letterman's a creepy old jerk, but he has power and influence, so of course the sanctimonious gasbags of the entertainment industry will forgive any indiscretion. It is only when someone loses their influence that we can see the moral preeners finally descend on him like jackals.

For all of Fey's feminist posturing, she respects actual power and influence, and to stay on the right side of the right people, so she can wax moralistic about Bill Cosby because he has no power or influence that matters to her, but will forgive Letterman because he still has power (even with his upcoming retirement).

This is what fauxminism has wrought. A world ready for Hillary!

Why yes, yes I do.

Tina Fey has the problem of the funny-ish smart-ish girl who wants to be thought of as sexy, too. This was a Cry for Help.

Stick with two-ish out of three, Tina.

I am Laslo.

I've watched 4 Tina Fey romantic comedies and didn't notice any feministing

$ grep tina.fey dvds.txt
admission tina fey
baby mama tina fey amy poehler
date night tina fey
this is where i leave you tina fey

There's nothing wrong with any of them, as these things go. Middle-of-the-road in goodness.

Sex appeal is the easiest assertion of female power. Why would that ever change?

He didn't get into trouble. He got divorced. But that was inevitable.

How long did it take with Carson? I heard rumors, going back to the 70s, that in real life Johnny Carson was not the jolly guy we saw on TV, but holy cow the stuff you hear about Carson these days can turn your stomach.

If feminism is nagging, than masculinity is punching.
Wait, masculinity is punching.
It follows that Gay lib is sodomy.

Oh come on--she looks great.

Plus, it could have been Lena Dunham--who looks revolting with her clothes on.

The truth of the matter is, that Tina is a slut just like everybody else. And, you know she's got a body that she wants to get out there.

Sexism is allowable, even necessary, depending upon who you are.

It is if Tina felt empowered by the experience.

I assume that's what Fey was spoofing.

I assume that's what Fey was spoofing.

Drew showed Dave her tits and danced all over his desk.

It was not at all what Fey's performance was about.

I have long thought that Tina Fey would be a unanimous selection to the Hall of Fame wing of the Academy of the Overrated.

Tina Fey isn't a feminist, she just plays one on TV.

I'm sure Fey has addressed the fact that in her own life her move from relatively-obscure writer to on-air talent (with the attendant massive increase in her personal fame and wealth) happened right around the time she got into much better shape physically and started dressing better/sexier--it's not hypocrisy per se for an outspoken feminist (or "feminist") to follow that trajectory, but it is at least interesting to note the arc from "I'm valuable for my mind and my talents so the world shouldn't care what I look like and it's sexist to insist it does/should" to "now that I'm in the public eye I'd better look and dress well in order to advance my career."
[run on]

Despite her one-time status as Chairwoman of the "liberal" Hive's Agitprop Division (Comedy Unit), I used to find Fey attractive (she looked great in DATE NIGHT) and had fantasies about banging the statism out of her. Seeing her strip, however, freed me from that fantasy.

CatherineM said...

No Ms. Althouse that is not what Fey is spoofing.

She is spoofing the same thing that Amy Schumer and Bill Hader are in this clip from Tuesday.

"She is spoofing the same thing that Amy Schumer and Bill Hader are in this clip from Tuesday."

Okay, I watched that. I give up. What are Amy Schumer and Bill Hader spoofing... other than Letterman generally. There was no stripping in that clip. So I still think it's the famous old Barrymore thing.

The Schumer-Hader thing was good, I guess, if you need help seeing what's bad about actresses on talk shows.

What am I missing?

Ann Althouse said...

I finally actually watched the whole Tina Fey clip. Boy, did that go on painfully long! They should have cut to commercial much sooner. She was stuck just standing there in her bra and Spanx for so long, with nothing really to do, sort of posing... as if it wasn't awkward, unpleasant, and un-pretty. Especially given Letterman's history.

The Schumer-Hader was much better, except for throwing white liquid on her in the end. Schumer is expressing contempt for women... women who deserve it. I'm not sure if she's able to get credit for being a feminist. I don't watch her show, but I read a New Yorker article about it.

Ann Althouse said...

The New Yorker piece on Schumer is subtitled "The raucous feminist humor of 'Inside Amy Schumer,'" so that must mean it's supposed to be feminist, but:

"[T]he girl whom Schumer satirizes in her sketches, in many permutations, is brutally clueless. She’s the subject of every op-ed on “girls today”—a needy narcissist, all bravado and entitlement. This Amy is the “dumb slut” and the “whiny white girl.” She’s the bad bridesmaid, the chick who gives out blow jobs like handshakes, who is so obsessed with taking the perfect selfie that she hires a team of stylists. She’s the type that a friend of mine once nicknamed the Whoo! Girl—we’d see her at Coyote Ugly with her posse, yelling “Whoo!,” fake-twerking, then weeping at 3 A.M. (Don’t ask me what I was doing at Coyote Ugly at 3 A.M.) In some of these sketches, that alternate Amy is a self-obsessed monster, but in others she’s vulnerable. In one brilliant early routine, she gets a booty-call text, and keeps writing and deleting replies, from “I am so lonely all the ti—” and “I would love another shot at giving you a blo—” to “Tell me what all my remotes do.” (When the guy sends a dick pic, she replies, “I love pugs!!! Is it a rescue?”) When she’s a secret agent, her code name is Butterface. When she agrees to appear in a children’s animated film, her character turns out to be a meerkat with exposed labia, who defecates onscreen. Her only line is a growled “Wooorms.” This self-mockery could turn into masochism, but somehow it never does, in part because the sharpness of the jokes is itself a form of self-assertion...."

Yeah, somehow... Somehow the word somehow is supposed to flip everything around.

Tina Fey just stripped of the last vestige of her dignity.

That isn't stripping. There wasn't any more skin showing after the so-called strip than there was before.

The Amy Schumer bit is every young starlet on these types of late night shows. The flirting, the Host saying I am leaving my wife for you (Conan) ..the shiny legs...and the outfits. Perhaps it's a bit too inside. I am sure the producers of those shows give a lot of direction. The girls talk about their dogs and say what nerds they are in real life. The last few years Amy is on every one of those shows 2x a year. Perhaps Dave had requirements for women and hence Tina will not be needing shoulder to knee girdles.

I liked Tina Fey's show, 30 Rock. The jokes were funny, and she was likable. That said, there was a lot of product placement for the Democratic Party talking points. They subordinated the talking points to the jokes mostly, but less so around the time of the Presidential election. Letterman's monologues were relentlessly partisan. I don't especially like him, but he knows how to deliver a line and get a laugh. You can be sure that if a Republican says or does something stupid, there will be plenty of jokes about it. Only when a Dem becomes a buffoon of Weiner's dimension does he become a fit subject for comedy.......They complain
about the influence of the Koch brothers' money in politics. How much money would it take for the Koch brothers to bribe every late night comedian and sitcom star in America to dump on the Democratic Party?
