Feeding young students lunches like that is evidence of misguided school authority that wants young people to live well and prosper. It's Vulcan.
But don't worry. On this earth Gaia's Green Police will put an end to that by stopping the cheap production and transportation of food using poisonous Carbon based energy.
These lunches are execrable, but what they were eating before was just as bad. High fat, high sodium, lots of meat. That's bad. What we need to do is fill up students with lots of bread.
I guess the point behind subsidized lunches is to reduce the tension between students with real parents who pack lunch or money for their kids, and latchkey urchins who are left to go hungry and have to sit and watch their classmates eat. Otherwise it would make more sense to give that money directly to the parents to decide what to buy and pack for the kids (and of course we know some simply won't do that, no matter how much money you give them).
I was intrigued to learn through that link that a not-insignificant number of school lunch policy "experts" (god help us that there even are such things) are pushing for a prohibition on home-packed lunches to force a 100% "participation" rate in school lunch programs.
There is literally no aspect of your or your family's life these busybodies will not deem you too incompetent to administer.

Kind of ridiculous, isn't it? I pack my kids' lunch because it's way cheaper and better for them. My 3rd grader's lunch today: Leftover chicken noodle soup from dinner last night, piece of homemade bread, apple, and a cutie orange.

It's like the old joke about airline food (when it still existed): "The food is absolute poison! And such small portions!"
Interesting how recent studies have shown that high fat isn't a problem, high sodium isn't a big problem, but carbs (including bread) are a huge problem. What Woody Allen joked about in "Sleeper" has turned out to be the truth.
Dr. Melik: This morning for breakfast he requested something called "wheat germ, organic honey and tiger's milk."
Dr. Aragon: [chuckling] Oh, yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life-preserving properties.
Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak or cream pies or... hot fudge?
Dr. Aragon: Those were thought to be unhealthy... precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.

Any high school athletes are getting the same number of calories as couch potatoes because "EQUALITY" or something. Once again, who exactly elected Michelle Obama and gave her that authority?
Healthy or unhealthy, what kids eat should be left up to parents, not the government. If parents want to band together and produce roasted chicken with feta and asparagus spears for the school kids, have at it. Just pay for it yourselves.
We might just be surprised to see parents pack decent lunches for their kids if they had no alternative. And what if parents pack nothing but chicken nuggets and potato chips with no fruits or vegetables? Well, what of it? At least they are feeding their kids.
I don't know why this article reminded me of all those WHO stats libruls use that assert far better life expectancy in various countries around the world, primarily due to their superior (read - big gub'ment) health care systems.

Good to see the food tray is universal across the globe

That's all a lot of baloney.

Dr. Melik: Incredible.
I don't believe any of it. Its a transparent attempt to say we need to spend more money on schools.
Aucun croustilles d'BBQ? Comment grossiers!
The article is a paean to socialist style public schools.
