"Doctors don’t know why more women, and in particular more young women, are opting for breast reductions."

"Some studies suggest that people are reaching puberty earlier, and the obesity epidemic is affecting breast size, [says Brian Labow, the director of the Adolescent Breast Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital]. 'And then there’s the whole environmental estrogen story,' he adds.  Environmental estrogens, often called xenoestrogens, are substances that mimic the hormone our bodies naturally produce, which is known to influence breast size. These chemicals are often found in pesticides, plastics, and meat from animals that have been given steroid hormone drugs to speed up growth. 'Is there estrogen in our soy? Is there estrogen in our various food products, chicken or cows? Are we putting in artificial or synthetic estrogen? I really don’t know.'"

From "The Rise of the Teenage Breast Reduction" in The Atlantic.

Xenoestrogens and macromastia might seem like a minor or non- problem, but it's something that is noticed. What are the less-noticed effects? And what about men (or what's left of men, after all that xenoestrogen)?

Hey, I'm no doctor, but I would suggest them ask them "why". And then maybe write it down.

I believe that someday people will be laughing at us for throwing our hormone system balance off by introducing hormones from the outside as in birth control or steroids in muscle building. We think that hormones/steroids are "natural" so tossing them into our bodies is OK but they are natural in a certain proportion which our bodies are designed to regulate. A few people need help with that balance but our world interferes with it on a massive population-wide scale. The weird thing is that we are well aware of the idea of natural balance when we call it ecology or the place of a "wetland" in nature.

You'd think that second hand estrogens would be a bigger issue.

There's your foundation for a conspiracy theory.

Mix in "The End of Men" and "Men on Strike" and stir.

They're men, so fuck 'em.

It's the unhealthy influence of Kiera Knightley. She's a major motion picture star with lots of money and access to the best boob surgeons on the planet. Yet she chooses to go minimal and, worse yet, appear topless in many of her movies. What kind do message is this sending to our young women? I think we're seeing the result.

@William: Plus such women are under the delusion that they'll land a Johnny Depp!

My daughters high school classmate just had a reduction. She went from a double L down to a double D. I didn't know reductions were common at this age, but I can certainly understand why a teen would want it done.

I for one am all for regulation of breast sizes by bureaucracy. What's a Nanny State good for if not regulating the source of our nurture. It's not a coincidence that our Capital Building is shaped into one big breast where the piglets go to get fattened on appropriations.

For decades we have been releasing vast quantities of all sorts of new-fangled chemicals into the environment without much bother about what the effects might be.

That's essentially global warming rhetoric with the exception that it focusses on one lonely molecule.

@wildswan,

You are probably right, but I have no idea how to handle it and feed 7 billion people or how to define the lesser evil or greater good.

In this modern age, men take it in the gonads both chemically and legally.

And women wonder why all they have to choose from are the "pajama boys" that they have worked so hard to create...

Darwin will sort it one way or the other. Not to worry.

There's something else lurks in the environment that influences young women's body image: Photoshop and mainstream fashion design. The herd mentality marks the avant garde, as well as the women they "serve."

Size 8 underwear is marked extra large, and creativity and lace seem to disappear as bra cup sizes get larger. Young women who don't fit the norm simply aren't ready to adopt a "matronly" image.

Adulation of the emergent adolescent body has long been a norm. Where besides "Juggs" and the Venus of Willendorf can you find artistic celebration of large breasts? Or breasts that have been used to feed a child? In art, the child conveniently covers the maternal image.

Fun fact: France, home to Paris, has great resistance to breastfeeding.

We ingest female hormones and antibiotics every day, and have been ingesting female hormones since the pill. Since it's been 50 years, maybe this is one of the reasons we are susceptible to more health promo lens.

This stuff isn't filtered out (yet). It's in our waterways and oceans.

If u want to have some fun with the environazis, point out the science isn't settled and would you be willing to support a ban on the pill until it is?

No one gives a damn about men. We're disposable.

I say, why not? Young women have been making them bigger for years. As well as a lot of other stuff. Partner has had double Ds for over 40 years now, and they hurt her back a bit, and a client got Medicare to pay to reduce hers to that size for similar reasons. You don't need them that big to nurse comfortably, and that really means that the only function of larger breasts is as sexual lures.

I will admit to being a little jaded here. Never was a breast man anyway. I remember one lass I tried to sneak up to my room in the fraternity in college whose breasts looked like large melons. Not that attractive to me. But, then, I was with another in my 40s whose breasts had already sagged below her waist by the time she was 40. She had them well supported during the day, so I didn't know what I was getting into. Not the sexiest encounter of my life. Wonder where they are now, 20 years later. It is what comes from having nursed three kids with very large breasts.

"What about men?" you ask. Well, apparently, they're turning into "women", too.

From MSN: ‘Inside Edition’ Hires First Transgender Television Reporter

Zoey Tur has joined "Inside Edition" as the nation's first transgender television reporter during February.

"We are thrilled to have Zoey join 'Inside Edition' as Special Correspondent and make some TV history," said the magazine show's executive producer, Charles Lachman, in a statement.

Formerly known as Chopper Bob, Tur made a name for herself as a helicopter pilot who covered the infamous O.J. Simpson police pursuit in 1994 and the Los Angeles riots in 1992.

So, from Chopper Bob to Chop 'er Dick.

I guess you don't need a joystick to fly a chopper after all.

Breast reduction in their teens, breast enhancement in their 20's and 30's.

I smell a plastic-surgeons conspiracy, or too much money, too little self-esteem, too concern about snickering...

On the other hand, huge breasts are a burden. They weigh on the spine, cause constant aches and back pains and bad postures.

Bruce H @ 10:35am,

Heh! I saw more than one Southern Sudanese woman (no bras worn there, for at least 99% of the population) who could literally hoist her sagged breast over her shoulder to the child she was carrying on her back.
