Do you believe that "senior officials from the FBI, the CIA, the State Department and other agencies" struggled desperately to figure out how to catch Edward Snowden?

WaPo reports: "U.S. officials scrambled to nab Snowden, hoping he would take a wrong step. He didn’t."

Something seems off about this — pumping up the legend of Snowden (never a wrong step!) and scrambling/desperate/bumbling government officials. It's got a movie-script quality that makes me skeptical.
U.S. officials offer conflicting accounts of how much they know about Snowden’s situation in Russia.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in an interview. “We have done the appropriate things at this stage of the investigation, and we know exactly where Mr. Snowden is.”
What really happened?

By the way, I love the phase "We have done the appropriate things." So all-purpose!

The man lives in Russia and appears on TV with Vladimir Putin!

Yes.

"Something seems off about this,…"

It's your sense that things are more together than they are - they aren't.

Maybe Snowden was fake.
If you can't actually monitor everybody all the time, the next best thing is to make them believe you can.

Sounds like something you'd hear in a marriage counselor's office.

A pundit asked last last week whether Obama was evil or incompetent, after a bit of analysis, answered "yes". And, I think that that can be said to apply to much of the top of this administration, and esp. of Eric Holder is involved. Both evil and incompetent. Would he lie in a situation like this? Duh!

I go back and forth, as the world scene unravels around us, watching as Sunni insurgents move on Baghdad, as the Russians move into the Ukraine, the Chinese into areas long claimed by their neighbors, with the IRS claiming that the dog ate Lois Lerner's emails, and thousands of illegal peasant children responding to the President's amnesty by flooding across our borders, etc., that they don't have a clue on how to run this country, to effectively handle our affairs externally and internally. Then, I am reminded of Obama's autobiography, dedicated to his father, the anti-imperialist communist, sitting through 20 years of sermons by Rev. Wright, and his apparent fixation with and following of Saul Alinsky. And, think that everything is going according to plan, and Obama really is determined to destroy this country from the inside. And, then I look at the gross incompetence shown in the ObamaCare rollout, as well as throughout the rest of the government, and see the incompetence. And, keep cycling around. I just don't know.

Right now, I am leaning strongly towards the gross incompetence and corrupt, over actively evil. Bringing the Chicago way of running a government to the federal level, and discovering that the theory behind the City That (Used to) Work, doesn't scale up when applied to the federal government. But, then, even above and beyond the Chicago corruption, you could see that some Dem mayors there were more competent, and some were grossly incompetent.

Which is a long way of saying, I think, that I think that Snowden ran rings around the Administration, as have so many others this last couple of years. Not because he was that good (though he may have been), but because they are so bad. I don't think that they wanted him to get away, but, in the end, am not quite sure that Obama, Holder, etc. weren't trying that hard either.

When ever this crew claims to be doing a thing you must assume they are not. When ever this crew accuses their opponents of a crime or misdeed, you must assume the crew has already committed that crime or misdeed.

They are not to be trusted.

The President doesn't need to catch Snowden. He can just kill him.

So, once again, "the experts" fucked up. And, once again, they haven't the courage or morals to admit it. But all the while these fascist shits tell us over and over that they must watch the extremists, i.e. the tea party, the opponents of the ass in the white house. What a bunch of cowardly cock ups. So damned incompetent they'd screw up a wet dream.
Yes ,yes " We have done the appropriate things ", yes, they've put top men on it....top....men. These ass hats can't run a lemonade stand.
Christ, and some of you shits voted for this bullshit twice. I hope the criminal wetbacks show up in front of your house, you deserve it. Deserve that and everything that follows. Enjoy the ride, you asked for it.

Why are they still focused on Snowden? This is so much closing the barn doors after the horses are out.

We have done the appropriate things.

Napoleon aid, "Do not ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence."

I can't decide which it is.

Obama is a bit like Robert Cook; he has his world view, and it is not going to change regardless of all evidence he might encounter that his view is not realistic.

So it is not so much ill will or incompetence, as willfully blind ignorance, though, of course, the results may be much the same either way.

The other thing I think you must understand about Barack Obama Jr. is that he is a child of "white" privilege, not "black."

He is his mother's on, and his grandparents', and he grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, not on Chicago's South Side.

If Putin in Ukraine and ISIS took as as much by surprise as I believe they did, I have little confidence our CIA and State Department are on task with almost anything anymore.

Sadly.

This means they completely fucked it up, right?

Where is our George Smiley?

@Meade

It could all be fake and Snowden himself might still believe he's real.

Healthcare.gov is an embarrassment.
The entire VA is still working off a single Tandy computer it bought at a yard sale in 1985.
The IRS system is so inadequate its employees are asked to store official emails on their personal computers at home.
Yet the NSA is practically SKYNET?
I don't know. But you're right that its no joke.

Well, when you pack both with ideology rather than what's in the best interest of the country, where bonuses and cocktail parties are priority, what do you expect?

That and they just might be on board with what is happening. You have how many in this administration who see Mao/Stalin as a hero? And how many are members of or associated with the muslim brotherhood?

Of. Course. NOT.
