Also on the Retronaut site was a collection of mugshots of women arrested for prostitution in Montreal in the '40s. A really, really fugly collection of mugshots. I was chatting with a friend about them, and my theory was that since there was a war on, perhaps all the pretty hookers had gone to the front. In any case, apparently those Frenchies up in Quebec weren't very choosy.
