"How nice that [Obama] came to give inspiring speeches, but what's happening in Mexico is far from what he talked about today."

"A really good speech by President Obama, but what Mexico was he talking about?"

"Obama is fantastic, but I believe that today he was talking about another country, not ours... My question is: Who wrote Obama's speech? Enrique Peña Nieto's team?"

"Obama is a great speaker; it's really impossible not to feel excited. However, the reality is different in Mexico. We need more action and fewer speeches."

The L.A. Times collects quotes from the crowd in Mexico.

Apparently, guns in Mexico materialize out of thin air rather than coming from someplace.

Wow, these LA Times scribes must be sucking up to the Koch Brothers in case they do purchsase their paper!

Fully automatic weapons cannot be coming from the United States.

And it is despicable for a President to bad mouth his own country while in a foreign land.

My brother is in politics and has a particular gift for rhetoric so it has always been customary at family gatherings, etc, for him to give the Little Speech. So, he gave the Little Speech at my wedding reception and it was a nice, rousing thing but I quickly realized that I had no idea who he was talking about, though he was ostensibly talking about me.

Thank you, Madame.

Actually, he was talking about the economy, rather than firearms, which is good enough in Mexico that some of the illegals are going back home.

It seems to be a thing with Democrats.

What Mexico needs is for the 35 million or so Mexians who came to the United states looking for a better life to go back to Mexico and create a country capable of providing it.

There is no reason why Mexico cannot be as free and prosperous as the United States. Except the corrupt ruling class.

Howabout instead of millions of Mexicans marching down US streets shouting Si se puede, they were marching down streets in Mexico?

Wince said...

You see, there is no reason Mexicans would stream into the US after immigration reform... even after a responsible steward of the US economy takes office as president and healthy economic growth resumes.

Obama sucks, and he's always sucked, as a speaker.

The quotes sound wrong.

Did LA Times say he said something about Mexico's guns coming from him (seen earlier on Drudge)? Robbery in broad daylight. He says things that would incriminate him and his administration in F&F but it goes unreported. It is almost like he is taunting the lapdog media to report it. No?

He was so flattering about Mexico, and negative about the US. What we really need is to model our immigration Policy after the enlightened Mexican one. Particularly the part about how they allow no immigration, and you can't own property if you're a Yanqui, or become a Mexican Citizen. How the Southern Mexican border is guarded by the Army and they shoot border crossers...

How dare those Mexicans not feel honored to have been spoken to by Obama!

I have one sentence for them: Feel free to apologize!

We need more speeches and soaring rhetoric. That will save us.

We need more empty promises and wasted tax payer dollars. We need to reward illegal immigration and give those who come here illegally a space at the front of the line with full tax payer funded benefits.

Obama, according to one recent poll, enjoys a 54% approval rating among Mexicans.

Forty-seven percent of Americans approved of Obama's job performance

I wonder why that is?

Obama.

The Music Man or Wizard of Oz?

A charlatan, nonetheless.

Feel free to apologize, Obama voters.

Like a lot of Althouse's posts on Obama this post is kind of passive-aggressive.

Obama made a similar visit to Egypt, just before an unreported civil war broke out, and the ruling regime was ousted. I wonder what illegal alien "leaders" in America, as well as their domestic patrons, were promised in order to betray their former and new countrymen.

Yes, but everybody says he is a great speaker. Maybe they don't want to be accused (falsely) of being racists. It is all about the magic skin.

Barry's like a time-share salesman, always trying to find new prospects while ignoring and abusing the ones he's gotten.

He could have at least bowed to the crowd to try and get some illegals to come over and vote for him.

These Mexicans have experienced what I never have: listening to an Obama speech. Suckers!

Is there any chance they could keep him ?

I'm saying that until fairly recently we didn't have a corrupt ruling class, and one of the factors that created it was the presence of millions of illegals from all over the world that expect a corrupt ruling class.

Well....as Obama likes to say, "As I've said many times before...blah blah blah, mmmphrp fromming bs." The Mexican audience seems much more clear thinking than the average tingly-legged American journOlist. They get that his speeches have no tie to any reality for anyone other than most American students and members of the NBC News division.

I don't recall Bush, or Clinton making speeches in foreign lands. I do recall Kennedy, and the "ich bin ein Berliner".

How many speeches has our polyglot (except Austrian) president given on foreign soil?

1. the campaign speech in Berlin
2. Cairo
3. Mexico
4. others??

Fully automatic weapons cannot be coming from the United States.

This bears repeating. Automatic weapons are being smuggled into Mexico from all around the world, except the U.S. and probably much of the rest of the "First World" (i.e. western Europe and Japan), and then some are being resmuggled into the U.S. along with the drugs and illegal aliens. Of the three, guns, drugs, and illegal aliens, the fully automatic weapons are probably the easiest to smuggle, and sometimes more lucrative. And, yes, some of those fully automatic guns in criminal Mexican (and later American) hands are weapons sold or given to the Mexican police and military. Some are sold, some are stolen.

Mexico has extremely tough gun laws, some of the toughest in the world, and an extremely high level of gun violence along much of our common border, due to the drug and human trade there.

A lot of Americans believe that one of the major purposes of Fast and Furious was to push the myth that Mexico is violent because of American guns, and therefore, we needed to better control our guns, requiring deplorable but necessary constraints on our 2nd Amendment rights. Of course, that is just the opposite of reality, with the violence (and fully automatic weapons) moving from Mexico north into the U.S., instead of the other way around.

I am one of those Americans who believes the purpose of Fast and Furious was to push the myth that Mexico is violent because of Americans guns.

I believe it so hard I pass the opportunity to substitute porpoises for purposes, it's that important, some things you just have to give up.

And you haven't convinced me otherwise.

And further Fast and Furious is just half of it. Half a pincher movement. To flood all South America with guns then blame it on America gun lust and bust moves on 2nd Amendment rights all over the place, as in Colorado and California presently.

And for the record, I don't even like guns. They scare me. But demagogues are worse.

But demagogues are worse.

like this: Michelle Obama says the nation’s school children are waking up every day and wondering “if they’re going to make it out of school alive.”

Disgusting. They should be in the business of reassuring parents and children about safety.

While apologizing, he should mention how the drug habits of scumbag yuppies like himself served to enrich and empower some of the worst people in Mexico.

Watching Obama is like watching a Shakespearean play. As in Hamlet, "The play is the thing" and maybe it does uncover the conscience of THIS king.

It is all fiction for lo-info listeners.

actually no, in a limited fashion. The US Government sells or authorizes the sale of full-auto weapons to the Mexican Government. Drug Lords either buy the weapons from units, or subborn whole units with their weapons.

I don't think that we are in disagreement, but rather, I was not precise enough. My point was that fully automatic weapons are not being smuggled across the border from the U.S. into Mexico. There just aren't enough of them available, they are way too expensive now, and it is too hard to transfer them. Rather, as you point out, our federal government is giving them to the Mexican government and/or they are being sold directly to such, and they are migrating into private hands (as you suggest), or they are being smuggled in. My guess is that AK type automatic weapons are the ones being smuggled in, while M16/M4 type weapons (along with guns sourced from Western Europe) are coming through the Mexican government at some level.

Interesting article: Snell: Waking the dragon — How Feinstein fiddled while America burned

I’ve come to realize after the Sandy Hook shooting that the reason we can’t have a rational gun debate is because the anti-gun side pre-supposes that their pro-gun opponents must first accept that guns are bad in order to have a discussion about guns in the first place. Before we even start the conversation, we’re the bad guys and we have to admit it. Without accepting that guns are bad and supplicating themselves to the anti-gunner, the pro-gunner can’t get a word in edgewise, and is quickly reduced to being called a murderer, or a low, immoral and horrible human being.
...
Liberals always make the common plea, “We need to get some experts to solve this problem!” for any public policy issue that comes along, which is a good thing. But when it comes to the gun issue, gun expertise is completely irrelevant to the anti-gunner — people who probably have never fired a gun or even touched one in real life, and whose only experience with guns is what they’ve seen in movies or read about in bastions of (un)balanced, hyper-liberal journalism, like Mother Jones. That a pro-gun person might actually know a lot about their hobby or profession doesn’t stand up against the histrionic cries of the anti-gunner.

How can we “gun people” honestly be expected to come to the table with anti-gunners when anti-gunners are willfully stupid about guns, and openly hate, despise and ridicule those of us who own them? There must first be respect and trust — even just a little — before there can be even the beginnings of legitimate discussion of the issue...
