In the 1970s, geologists discovered crystalline natural gas—methane hydrate, in the jargon—beneath the seafloor. Stored mostly in broad, shallow layers on continental margins, methane hydrate exists in immense quantities; by some estimates, it is twice as abundant as all other fossil fuels combined....

"What If We Never Run Out of Oil?"
"New technology and a little-known energy source suggest that fossil fuels may not be finite. This would be a miracle—and a nightmare."

Is that an allusion to "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown"?
bago 20: I for one will not worry about peak oil. I'm more concerned about Peak Liberty, which I think we are already passed.
Boy, you got that one right.
Jay Vogt: And wouldn't it be cooler still if that exploitable oil tract would only be about 2,000 acres or so and located in a spot that literally no one goes to anyway. And, what if there were an existing world-class pipeline origin only a hundred miles away?
You are obviously referring to a real oilfield somewhere in the US that is not currently being exploited. I'm sorry to say though that I don't know where you mean.
Weren't da Vinci and every other innovator of air travel intensely interested in birds?
Quibble! Leonardo da Vinci should be referred to as either Leonardo da Vinci or Leonardo. Vinci was where he was born.
As noted above, this was a very good thread until......
If we never run out of oil, THEN WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!
The hysteria is settled.

I say no, we need more solar. Solar panels on every roof. Dismantle all the coal/nuclear/gas plants now.
You might want to talk to Hyphenated about solar and storage issues.

You do realize that Leonardo was a super-villain don't you?

That almost sounds like a serious question, though dressed up in your usual snark.
But there is a simple explanation. Carbon is cheaper and more efficient than other energy sources. For all the moralizing about alternative fuel, the reason they haven't caught on is simply because they aren't as good, and whatever benefits they might have are offset by cost and efficiency. Unless and until you can make any alternatives as cost effective and efficient (which you won't) as fossil fuels, then there's no reason tslking about them.
If you want to build a house that runs on solar power, corn oil and windmills more power to you.but that doesn't mean that you can realistically expect society to run society on solar power, corn oil and windmills.
And bringing your message onto the Internet is probably a bit hypocritical.
Do you really expect something like the Internet with its millions of servers all running 24/7, all requiring vast amounts of energy which assuredly is not coming from alternative energy sources, to exist without fossil fuels?

We can't run out of oil even if there's no new source. The price rises and substitutes then happen.
This! Markets work! Even hopelessly muddled markets struggling under government mismanagement. Unleash the profit incentive and stand back. Markets are more powerful than science and religion combined.
