Drudge slags the First Lady with the unsupported assertion that the "Inaugural lunch tops 3,000 calories."
Drudge links to a Washington Times article that refers without linking to another website that supposedly lists the items on the menu and purports to know the calorie count. I found that other website myself, and here's the article, which is obviously exaggerating the calorie count by assuming immense portion sizes. A first course of lobster, with some sauce and potato is unlikely to add up to 783 calories. It's almost surely tiny. A second course with grilled bison and some squash puree is not going to be 1194 calories. It's a lunch entree of lean meat.
This is a very nice and sensible lunch. Stop pooping on it!

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Au contriare, ladle on the poop!
A sensible lunch does not cost what that lunch did.
It is the potatos that are deadly, not the calories. At least use up to date research on diet and obesity when criticizing.
Trey
As stated elsewhere, haters gonna hate. No surprise that Drudge and the Washington Times went there.
That's a great American lunch. Lobster and bison say America. And dessert is apple pie.
If you don't think that's perfectly appropriate, you are a pooper.

NBC wouldn't lie!

Everybody poops, Althouse.
How many Americans ate bison & lobster for lunch today?
How many had to skip lunch because they had to work?
The eye-rolling thing she did for Boehner was so typical. Ever since I read her horrific screed of a Princeton thesis I knew that she was the divisive force behind the Obama Presidency. If we could somehow factor out her bad attitude and influence we might actually get some place in this second term.
She deserves all the flak she catches, IMHO

Yes, Sesame Street. What a great kids show. Hard to believe that so many people on the right seem to have a problem with it.
We have to do more with less.
Unless you're a FOO.
Lunch sounds delicious.
The kids at school today had yogurt and a cheese stick.
Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating.
It's like you're not even trying anymore, somefeller.
Ann,
You need to reevaluate your view of average Americans. Lobster and Bison is not a 'sensible' lunch, it is an extravagent lunch.
When you set yourself up to make choices for others for their own good there's going to be some pushback when you don't follow your own rules. At least at first, until all the rebellion is squashed.
What did the Bush's have for their inaugural lunches, I wonder?
Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules.
Obama is like Bush.
The Bush's didn't make a religion out of telling us what to eat, so I don't care what they ate.
Bush did it too!!!
Speaking of the lunch...here is Michelle setting an example of how a Lady behaves in public:

We harp on the big shit too, mahal.
Buffalo, it's buffalo.
And, if you didn't shoot it (with either a bow and arrow or your Sharps rifle), you got no right to eat it.

As some phony folksy proves every time he opens his mouth.
PS Nothing wrong with a little chicken and some asparagus.
After all, Franklin and Eleanor served the King and Queen hot dogs. They understood living it up like Romanovs while the country was in a Depression was bad form.
Too bad the pseudo-sophisticates aren't that smart.
Please tell us, garage, what the unstupid shit is and I'll try to only comment about that. For now hypocrisy still works for me.
@Inga: Menus are at the link: link
Looks like Bush was beefier.
"You need to reevaluate your view of average Americans. Lobster and Bison is not a 'sensible' lunch, it is an extravagent lunch."
It's sensible in terms of calorie count, which if you read my post in context, you know that's what I mean.
Of course, it's an elegant lunch, for an elite occasion. But it's not prissy and it's not heavy and it's not extravagant. It's nice and American and appropriate.
Lobster and clam chowder are regional Americana, and apple pie with cheese and ice cream is the comfort food of the common people. A little slab of bison is a variation on steak.
To act like this is hoity-toity or highly fattening is just stupid. Save your credibility for something that deserves criticism.
Sooner or later, everything is shit.

You act like it's an either/or thing.
"President George W. Bush's first inaugural dinner in 2001 maintained the American theme with a native seafood assortment, lamb, chard sautéed with cranberries, and a mushroom and corn soufflé. Dessert was an apple tart with cinnamon ice cream. At his second inaugural dinner, in 2005, guests enjoyed lobster medallions with orange and grapefruit sections, filet of beef tenderloin with asparagus, baby carrots, potatoes au gratin and Georgia peach crumble with vanilla ice cream."LA Times http://www.latimes.com/features/la-fo-inaugural14-2009jan14,0,179356.story
" Menus are at the link: link"
Thanks for that.
Looks like lobster first course is standard and a red meat main course as well.
Obama's menu today is the least hoity-toity one on the list!

'Tis true. American English makes no reference to the Bison Nickel, which made its debut 100 years ago this year.
The most American lunch would be one that everyone has to pay for themselves.
Whatever it was, they seemed to enjoy it.
"You act like it's an either/or thing."
Nope. It could be both, but if you act like it's EITHER, I am saying you are diminishing yourself.
Obama's menu today is the least hoity-toity one on the list!
Except for Carter, that miser!
I am diminished; I wasn't invited to lunch today.
I had a Bison Burger for my birthday luncheon, I shot it with my trusty bow and arrow.
Give me Liberty, or Give me Lobster!
Let's hear it for Pres. McKinley:
"[After his inauguration,] President William McKinley ate a corned beef sandwich and a coffee in a Senate committee room."
Speaking of slags and bison and poop, I still don't get Mrs Obama's wig-do.
Ahhh bison, Ted Turner's subsidy.
Inga, was it from
Ted's?
I don't really care what Mrs. Obama eats.
I wish she'd return the favor.
None of those in Wisconsin Deb. It was at the Thunder Bay Grill.
If I were inaugurated, you can get you'd get a lot of good Wisconsin cheese at the luncheon. And something made with maple syrup.
Not on the menu: Beets. Lima beans. Strawberries.
You can *bet* you'd get...
I take Ms. Obama's advice on food intake with a grain of large ass.
It's just typical of the unfair coverage the press gives the Obamas. I certainly hope they don't have to bear this unholy burden through the second term.
I guess I could have checked the map on their WEB SITE to which I LINKED.
Maybe Drudge should worry about his own health and appearance. Not going to win to many awards in the looks department.
Maybe Drudge should worry about his own health and appearance. Not going to win to many awards in the looks department.
Oh yeah?? Well... DRUDGE IS FAT AND UGLY TOO!!!
Tit for tat, that's pragmatic!
I don't care about what they had for lunch, but what's up with the purple glove fashion statement?
Ann,
You misconstrue what I am criticizing. I've no problem with the dinner they served, only with the characterization of it being 'sensible'.
It's almost surely tiny.
This is the assumption that you are operating under, proclaiming sensibility. You have no basis for knowing what the portion size is, given the sources you linked. Only that they claim large portion size, and you think that they are wrong to claim as such, but you have no evidence one way or another.
I'm not saying it is wrong, just for most americans, sensible it is not. It's not even the same sport as sensible.
What's wrong with the purple gloves, went well with the coat. Or is not First Ladylike?
I could have sworn I heard NPR tout the 3000 calories this morning, so perhaps scorn could be hurled more "liberally" too. There is a website, which purports to add up the calories (>3000).
Look at the size of her ass. Of course she eats 3,000 calorie lunches!
What's wrong with the purple gloves, went well with the coat. Or is not First Ladylike?
Reminded me of this.
I would not claim to be able to calculate the calories of the lunch, but I would bet that it was done with the same kind of "math" used by food alarmist groups. They always assume you finish every drop (plus re-fill) of the colossal sized soda, every last french fry and use all the salad dressing when you order a salad.
I'm a hater and I'm gonna hate.
Did he show the grade school children who wrote his speech? Were they in a parade?
It's a very stupid speech.
Like Gatsby every line can be looked at separately and Fisked or dismissed as insipid. So it goes like this:
insipid fisk insipid fisk fisk insipid fisk fisk insipid fisk insipid fisk fisk fisk fisk insipid insipid insipid
Thank you for telling us what we already know, Stupid, and already heard ten thousand times but really really thank you for letting us in on how you intend to drive up our debt to 20,000,000,000,000,000.
Relax it by making our money worth half as much. And tax the living shit out of everybody, but call it something else. Call it anything but tax and fool your voters. They'll blame everything else.
Your supporters will defend you but you're still a bald-faced liar when noncompliance is termed a fine.
And tax with regulation so absurd that we're all criminals by simply waking up and getting out of bed and no body can possibly follow the layers of conflicting law ripped off with whiplash carelessness by the hour. And we're well and truly slaves to judicial caprice.
You voted this dumbass, it's your fault.
It's why I'm a hater.
So if you didn't vote for this dumbass then it's possible we still might be able to talk, and if you did vote for this dumbass then we simply speak a different language. It seems like the same language but it's not. We're completely talking past each other. We're in different realities. I do hear you but you make no sense at all and I'm certain the reverse is true too. So Sorry. Because that's the case, you will not be able to see this correctly. Let's be friends outside your damaging retarded enslaving politics, and let's have an apple turnover together. They came out real flaky. Gave most away, they were a hit and were shared all around due to their fine texture and taste.
If you did not see that invitation your language is different. I have no idea what that sounded like to you. Maybe something like "The giraffe poked its frying pan through the Scrimshaw pipe and demanded the rope be baptized." I don't know. You're a mystery to me. Too bad you cannot see the invitation, too bad we use the same words but speak them on different planets, too bad we cannot be interphase and be friends.
While I'm on it, I really do hate your shoes.
I like the purple gloves.
I'd like some like that to bike with, as long as the dye doesn't run and turn my hands purple.
Aw, Chip, u mad bro? Maybe you can unclench your little fists (you know, the ones you say you want to use to punch people with from time to time) and make a souffle or something.
Someone's lunch was bitter....that's for sure....
What is it, 47,000,000 on the SNAP program? Do they get lobster appetizers too?
How many had to skip lunch because they had to work?
How many had to skip lunch because they're out of work? How many wish they had work?
Don't mind the hate myself. But it's always, without fail, over the stupidest trivial shit. Always.
yeah, it couldn't possibly be about a shitty economy, 47,000,000 people on food stamps, the fact that we're almost 4,000,000 jobs short of where we were when the recession started, or any of that other stuff.
Oh, wait,m you're a Dem, so you think all of that is a good thing. After all, poor people tend to vote Democratic, especially if they come from broken homes, so you want more poor, uneducated out-of-work welfare recipients from broken homes. Hey, whatever it takes to support the Party. Party above everything, right?
I like the coat and gloves. I think the luncheon is fine, but it's certainly not inexpensive. I even like the hair.
I just think if people are going to set themselves up as arbiters of what we should eat and how much money is enough we have the right to call hypocrite when they don't follow their own rules.
The purple gloves were the best part of the outfit.
Bologna garnished in mouse droppings would be more appropriate
You know... I'm no fan of the Obama administration by a long shot. But carping about the lunch portions and calorie load is just so petty. There are better things to criticize, and Drudge singling out that just feeds a perception that Obama critics don't have substantive complaints about him. We do. We all do. And they deserve better than to take second fiddle to a celebration meal that just happens to be a bit indulgent.
Most have eaten more during the Super Bowl. This is really a petty thing for Drudge to jab at.
This is the state of the nation and has been for the last decade or so. The party out of power craps and moans about the other. Their followers do the same. I kind of enjoy seeing the obama hypocrites held to the same standard they held Bush. Wow, that shoe does feel kind of binding on that other foot, eh?
But if you have a kid who is a high school athlete and eats the now calorie restricted school lunch, this is not a petty issue but a big issue. I think that the point of all of this is that there are times when a calorie limit doesn't make sense--like for athletes or special occasions--but the Obama administration isn't into exceptions on that issue, except for themselves.
@ Althouse
"This is a very nice and sensible lunch. Stop pooping on it!"
Inaugural menu
It isn't -that- sensible. Perhaps if viewed in terms of single dishes it might be sensible. Combined into a three course meal I can easily see it hitting the 3,000 calorie mark.
