Democratic Governor Deval Patrick will get to appoint someone pending a special election (which would come in late spring or early summer).
Dukakis is — we're told — the obvious choice if the idea is to install a placeholder.

The appointment of Michael Dukakis would be a fitting reward for a job well done.
WIN WIN!
The obvious choice would be Paul Kirk, the previous placeholder. Apparently there is a very democratic desire to spread the wealth.
Now, if there was a sincere desire for bipartisanship, Scott Brown could be appointed as the interim Senator, knowing he is likely to run anyway. That might allow him to tack seniority, to the benefit of the state in the not unlikely event that he should win.
We're being haunted by the ghost of presidential candidates past.
If were Dukakis, I would decline to be a "placeholder."
What a contrast with South Carolina, where the Governor, looking to the future of her state and party, appoints a Black congressman to a vacant Senate seat, while in Mass. the Governor appoints a "placeholder" who reminds everyone of how bad a Democratic presidential candidate can be.
the return of the little white duke.
Please don't tell me that Willie Horton is out of prison again!
Dukakis lobbied for the position so he could get on the armed services committee in order to go on inspection tours of the Army and drive more tanks, lol..
If Kerry's nomination is approved (very likely), then Elizabeth "Lieawatha" Warren will be the state's senior senator because she'll have seniority over the placeholder. This is a big contrast to the situation from just a few years ago where Kerry - despite over 20 years in the Senate - was still junior to Ted Kennedy. Having two such junior senators would normally weaken a state's representation but I'm sure they'll do something to buck up Warren's meager status.
It will be interesting to see how much $$$ Wall St. and the billionaire con overlords want to waste on Brown this go around.
Also, Walker was elected twice in less than two years, whereas Scotty could lose twice in the span of 6 to 8 mos. ie MA is not WI and he will not be runnin' against a Coakley who refused to engage/campaign in the previous special election.
Indeed as Brown now has a losers persona, especially after he put his foot in his mouth ad nauseam during his 2008 campaign.
His opponent better not claim to be part indian lol.
"Walker was elected twice in less than two years, whereas Scotty could lose twice..."
Scott Brown, the other Scotty.
Althouse, whereas it is true both Walker and Brown were two of your boy-toys, try to figure it out on your own.
Intuitive thinkin' like you used re: the 2012 presidential election.

More juvenile BS, shiloh.
Why don't you go play with kids?
This act of yours is very old. If you can't deal with things on an adult level, go play with children.
Shiloh, you should probably change your internet name to Iago. Motiveless malignity.
Well, Kerry is mostly famous as a failed Democratic presidential candidate from Massachusetts who had the worst photo in political history taken of him -- just Google "John Kerry condom photo," or go here:

So it would only be fitting if Kerry's replaced by a failed Democratic presidential candidate from Massachusetts who had the second-worst photo in political history taken of him -- just Google "Dukakis tank photo," or go here:

Say what you will about John Kerry, but at least when he faints he actually faints.
Shiloh: Scott Brown's problem was the massive turnout during a presidential election, especially with Obama on the ticket. He turned out his base, and ran far, far ahead of the normal Republican vote in terms of attracting independents and Democrats, but it just wasn't enough in such a Democratic-heavy state with massive turnout.
Brown likely would have beaten Warren with an off-year election turnout, even given how much she outspent him by. Given how popular Brown remains, he should easily coast to victory with a lower-turnout special election, except if the highly popular Gov. Deval Patrick chooses to run, in which case Brown might well decide to run for Governor instead.
ST, if it was juvenile bs, Althouse is free to reply ... which she hasn't.
My post was pretty straightforward as (less than (2) years) applied to Walker and (6 to 8 mos.) applied to "Scotty" Brown.
This is not rocket science!
Dukakis still has a pulse?

Considering he beat Maatha Coakley and only lost this time because of the stolen election, he should do OK.
Especially against Snoopy.

"losers persona"? (and it's loser's, moron)
After 1 election?
What about your wet dream, Willie Whitewater? He blew an election (and several interns).

I seem to recall she bitch slapped you a couple of times, one within the last month, but the reason she doesn't lower herself is how Cheyenne chiefs dealt with people like the little asshole - a sigh and then they'd say, "A dog has soiled my tipi".
Althouse, give your #1 doting, trained pet seal another hug.
TIA
"Well, Kerry is mostly famous as a failed Democratic presidential candidate from Massachusetts who had the worst photo in political history taken of him."
No. He's most famous as a traitor who was on the communist's side in Viet Nam.
As usual, Dukakis will be in the tank.
Maybe Deval Patrick should appoint Romney.
I take that as an admission of surrender.
Remember this SNL skit from 1988?
John Lovitz portraying Dukakis hosting a Hugh Hefner-like party predicting his own loss, with guests Willie Horton and other notables.
Dukakis After Dark
Michael Dukakis: Good evening. I'm Michael Dukakis. The Democratic candidate for President of the United States. Now, several months ago when we purchased this half-hour of television time, we planned to use it as a last-minute appeal to undecided voters. But.. quite frankly.. after meeting with my advisors, and seeing the latest polls, it's clear to me - and it would be clear to anyone - that I don't have a chinaman's chance of winning this election. I'm gonna be beaten. Badly beaten. And I see no reason to sit here tonight and pretend otherwise. However, I've got thirty minutes of prepaid, non-refundable network time. Now, I could sit here, give you thesame old song-and-dance about "good jobs with good wages", and "the best Ameroca is yet to come".. blah, blah, blah, blah! But if you haven't bought it by now, why bother? So, instead of speeches, I've decided to throw a party, for everyone involved with the campaign. It's a good party. A fun party. And you're invited. After all, the federal matching funds - you paid for half of it! So come on in.
[Dukakis gets up, as the lights rise and a woman removes his business suit and replaces it with a Hugh Hefnerish smoking jacket, then he joins the party ]
Michael Dukakis: [ is handed a drink by a bunny ] Ah! Everybody's here. Come on, don't be shy. Well, here's my running-mate, Lloyd Bentsen.
Lloyd Bentsen: ..Then I looked him straight in the eye, and said, "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy!" Ha ha!
Michael Dukakis: [ ambles over ] Lloyd. How's that martini treating you?
Lloyd Bentsen: Not too badly, Mike. I wish the polls were treating us a little better.
Michael Dukakis: Well, Lloyd, we represent unpopular and discredited views.
Lloyd Bentsen: Mike! Now that it's all over, you can tell me. You were gonna raise taxes, weren't you?
Michael Dukakis: Well, you bet I was! Through the roof! But now.. I won't get the chance.

Is anyone else really freaking tired of the ed/shiloh flame war soiling every single thread?
Say what you will about John Kerry, but at least when he faints he actually faints.
Hillary would for a Purple Heart too.
Isn't there a Kennedy-In-Waiting avaialable for the job? Or maybe just give the office keys to Theresa for a couple of years?
Because...diversity.

I DVR all threads, then, I just skip the dull parts.
If were Dukakis, I would decline to be a "placeholder."
Maybe he needs the money?

If only. I can't say what I would like about John Kerry...it is against federal law.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!
Literally! The biggest laugh I got this year!
"I DVR all threads, then, I just skip the dull parts."
Can you really do that? :)

FYI. Kerry was Lt. Governor under Dukakis.
I wasn't paying that much attention in 1988 but Dukakis struck me as a pretty decent guy and I haven't heard anything since to the contrary.
He reminds me of old-style Democrats -- liberal, but not agents of New Left subversion.
One more doofus senator from Massachusetts won't matter much, temporary or permanent.
The real chiller is Lurch as Sec. Of State.
"Please don't tell me that Willie Horton is out of prison again!"
He's out and a candidate for Congress in Mass.
Democrat, of course!
Michael Dukakis is 79, isn't that a hair old for a new senator?
We deserve nothing less.
If you don't like the shiloh edutcher relationship please do not go to see
"Les Miserables."
It doesn't matter. In the next election, the voters in that state will elect someone just as bad.
I understand our future Secretary of State will [be] spending Christmas in Cambodia. Celebrating the birth of Jesus with the Buddhists.
But it's all very hush-hush, you know, singing Jungle Bells and all that.

Cool. Wonder if he will take his special "I have the hat" hat with him :-)
