At the Bikes-in-the-Living-Room Café...

Are they still there? No!

"Café," here at the Althouse blog, signifies an open thread in the comments. Write about what you like. And if you happen to have any shopping you need to do, entering Amazon through this link will — at no extra cost to you — send me: 1. some money, and 2. the message that you appreciate what this blog gives to you. (That link is always at the top of the page, under the blog's title: click "Shop Amazon.")

Who comes in?

(and do they commute?)

Years ago I rebuilt the motor for my '63 T-Bird. Not having a garage, I had it on an engine stand in the living room. My wife didn't mind, especially when she discovered she could improve FM radio reception using the motor as an antenna.

All the Minority Get ObamaLoan!! Romney Sucks!

Word of the free money spread quickly in Milwaukee over the past three weeks, and applicants flocked to the company's location at 2821 N. 4th St. for appointments. Sharon Austin, a disabled and retired Milwaukee resident, was one of them.

"The word-of-mouth just spread it everywhere. I heard a lady say, 'Go get the $1,500! It's free money!' " said Austin, who later contacted the Journal Sentinel.

"At first we were told it was from President Obama, who had put up some funds for people who are having trouble with their bills. When we got down there, it was a different story. Everyone seems to think it was government funding they had to help thousands of people with their bills. They said, 'It's not a scam, you don't have to pay it back.' Stay in the membership at least a couple of months. If you pay for a couple of months, we would be able to borrow again, I think every five to six months," Austin said.

People around America have such serious expensive bikes. Surfers have a culture of shabby chic bikes. Our bikes are stripped down beach cruisers. No gears, no fenders, and fat tires for negotiating sand. Maybe a drink holder for holding and hiding a cup of beer while zooming around the beach. Rust buckets to some extent. But I'm talking south east beach bike culture. California is a different place. You have to be rich to live close the ocean there and they have a completelydifferent beach bike esthetic.

We rebuilt a 396 in the dining room of my frat house. No real down side, we couldn't get any sororities to come to Monday night dinners anyway. Yes we were pigs.

I did that to a couple of motorcycles when I was young.

I stained a whole living room set of Art & Crafts furniture I built for my lake home in my dining room. Three end tables, a coffee table, a TV table, Morris Chair and ottoman. The only problem was my cat rubbing up against the stain. Used mineral spirits to clean his fur but then had to give him a bath to wash out the MS...didn't want him to get sick grooming himself. He didn't like the bath at all...flying claws of fury!

Well the Petraeus testimony has come and gone and no lies were revealed and Obama will not be kicked out of his office, contrary to what the right wing radio has claimed--imagine that.

Remind us, Ann, why is this Benghazi thing so important?

Because Obama isn't batting one hundred percent? Because the perpetrators weren't definitively identified quickly? So what?

There is a war on terrorism under way, we are told, but who are what is a terrorist exactly? It is such a murky concept:

http://tinyurl.com/cxxbu4k

There are millions of young rootless men in that part of the world who hate us. Given half a chance and a dog whistle many will come running.

Why wasn't this just a skirmish in a very big war?

Joaquin said...

Maybe it's a big thing because:
1. Americans died.
2. Signal bells were rung for months about lack of security.
3. The administration lied for what, a month, about the cause of the attack.
4. Why the cover-up?
I could go on.

YMMV. And there's no reason to promote diplomats who either willingly or purposefully withholder information obvious to half the nation.

What purpose did Rice's doing that serve, R/V?

Chickelit,

Yes, Ann and Meade are surely good people, but I would love to have Thorstein (born in Cato, Wisconsin, and grew up in Nerstrand, Minnesota) stop by for a visit and check out all the display goods at Meadhouse. I'd pay money to see that. I'd like to see the expression on his face when Ann would ask him (again) to make purchases through Amazon to send her more cash, you know, for essential items like an Erlenmeyer flask.

We are building a deer proof fence around the garden area next spring so that we can grow anything without it being devoured by the deer. We had 5 in the yard today. Two bucks, one nice four point, and two does and a yearling. PESTS!

On all four corner posts I plan to put some whirly gigs I think one of the corners will be risque for fun and to see if my husband is paying any attention at all :-D

Anyone have a pattern for an off color whirligig?

Invited to talk about whatever's on my mind: I looked recently at the tax policy center (Brookings) report on what would happen if all Bush tax cuts lapsed. My household federal income tax would increase by $9-10,000 -- a lot more than I thought. My household is in the $185-190K income range, so we are in the top 5% of income nationally. For us, we could find $10K by not taking a vacation ($5-8K depending on what foreign country we go to, typically) and not putting as much by for retirement. I'm not writing to look for sympathy, but simply to put out there a real example of the tax side of the fiscal cliff, and what it will mean. My guess is that for many Althouse readers, household incomes are larger than ours, and their tax bites would be larger.

There’s a link up at Drudge about Ron Paul saying in his farewell speech that the Internet will be the thing to provide the “alternative to the government media complex that controls the news and most political propaganda.”

Made me wonder how this can happen when the Yahoo! web portal, for example, is already pretty much the NYT, Reuters, AP, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, etc., all rolled into one.

Hey, have you ever thought of writing copy for J. Peterman?

Okay, let me try.

Erlenmeyer Flask, durable yet elegant, from the hands of Old Masters, to your hands as you sample wine with a slice of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

Rural Feed Cap, handsomely assembled and stitched with the finest strands of Andalusian polyester and Transylvanian cotton, appropriate for both an invitation-only swine-basting or for a twilight stroll to the exo-domicilic relief chamber.

Hi guys!

Just popped in to report on living life as John Galt. And it's wonderful. A friend comes up and asks me "did you see what Obama did today?" And I reply "Nope! And I don't care!" That ends the conversation. No getting adgitated, no getting high blood pressure. I can see why the left chooses to live like this.

Least some suspect my motives, I am not trolling or mocking. I highly recommend this as a life style. Just care for yourself, and fuck everyone else. It's the American way.

Anyway, I'm going to the Dr. Monday to be examined for disability. My dad's cancer has spread to his brain now. Cross your fingers on that one.

See ya next week with a new update from Galtland.

Ciao

Indeed it is. If you buy your Amazon products through my website, you will be automatically enrolled in a contest in which you could win an all-expenses-paid Reality Tour. See Old New York like you've never seen it before!

However, if you decide to purchase any products through Ann's website, then most likely a child will go without a meal in Somalia.

Your choice.

I'm always dogging Apple for selling over-priced, under-powered computers, but today I'll give them credit due.

Someone is giving me a new iPad for Christmas. Also, I've been unsuccessfully looking for a tutor for my son who is especially interested in a certain language. Facetime is simple, and it seems that everyone but me has an iPhone. (I ditched my smartphone a while back.)

Swirl these things together and problem solved. I found a tutor over a thousand miles away who is willing to tutor via Facetime. Hurrah.

Whatever I don't like about Apple, their products are ubiquitous and pretty idiot proof. Makes it easy to use their stuff to collaborate with people.

DBQ, Despite living in a dense, suburban area, I have deer (and rabbits) in the yard a lot. This past summer I used the spray repellant, which worked very well. I had to spray about once a week. The smell of this repellant was truly awful, but I was able to keep the flowers in the yard.

Mandarin Chinese?

No, there are actually lots of options for that around here. (There is a Chinese School, a language school, and there are many independent Mandarin tutors.)
