"A New Guide to the Democratic Herd."

Illustrated with a cute animation of blue donkeys.

And here's a corresponding animation with red elephants.

I don't think that the political atmosphere is any more vicious than ever.

This is yet another myth that Dems are pushing in their "all racism all the time" PR campaign.

The political atmosphere has always been about as vicious as can be imagined. You should have been there in 1968.

Don't forget about the rooster. Straight ticket Democrat voting is known around here as pulling the rooster's tail.

The forgot the leaches. Shame on them for discriminating against the leaches.

Interesting about this little cute piece of fluffery, if all of the groups were added up they still aren't a majority of the populace unless when presumes they will always vote 100% of the time democrat.

Mostly fair and accurate on both sides, and it reminds you that the nation really is pretty diverse in opinion, especially when you consider that even those groups break up into subgroups. Still it all comes down to the size and scope of government. Nearly every issue is really that when you are talking politics.

They also left out the racists on both sides. Those who will vote for or against Obama because he's Black. The thing about that is that he's not really, so those are probably the dumbest voters of all.

to be fair, there were far more racist Obama voters, who demonstrated they were willing to vote for an unqualified black man in 2008, than there are racists voting for Romney in 2012

Tri-corner.

Why did they put the deer-hunting hat on the Libertarian elephant? It doesn't fit the description.

Ah ha...tricorner hat. I thought it looked like one of those furry hats that a Canadian might wear hunting.

Perky donkeys vs. ponderous elephants.

They just had to throw in "anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage" in their description of the Tea Party's motivating issues. The Tea Party is about one issue and one issue only: reducing the size of government. Gives you an idea of what a threat the NYT finds the Tea Party when they have to make shit up about them.

I'm amused that the Republican Party has both a disaffected group and a vanished/extinct group, but apparently the Democrats do not.

kentuckyliz, the democratic party emblem in Alabama used to be a white rooster. The motto on it was 'White Supremacy for the Right.' I understand the current motto is 'Democrats for the Right.' I am pretty sure they don't mean the political right. Don't know if they still use the rooster or not.

Whoops, I just checked on google and learned Kentucky still uses the white rooster but Alabama does not.

That's because the news media successfully helped the likes of Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, and other big-government social conservatives sell themselves as a "tea partiers".

Any assessment of the Democrat constituency that doesn't specifically identify the Black voting bloc is dishonest.

Hanged if I know. I'd have gone with a propeller beanie there.

I prefer Jay Cost's explanation of the remaining Democratic Party. Mutually antagonistic interest groups that want the spoils of politics long after they are gone.

The elephants are cuter.

They also appear to be on a mission. The donkeys are just milling around.

As for the extinct Elephants: I grew up in New England in the '50's and '60's, the hotbed of liberal (that's what we said then, not moderate) Republicanism. A lot of New England liberals (or moderates, if you prefer) were Republicans because they felt that the Democratic party was dominated by the Irish, Italians, Polish, and Jews (not so much Blacks in those days), and of course all those ethnics were corrupt, and besides, you wouldn't let them in your country club.

The attempt to portray the now-extinct liberal Republicans as morally superior to the small government, Main Street, or Tea Party Republicans is laughable. Even the nasty hateful bigotted social conservative Republicans seem to be prejudiced against fewer people than the old liberal Republicans.

Why are the elephants slow?

That's more like the old Democratic Party. The blue-collar and Southern donkeys would have been marching in the elephant parade; their spots in the donkey herd should have been replaced by techies, druggies, and crony donkeys. And maybe a Rockefeller elephant to represent the rich suburbanite liberals who once upon a time registered Republican, but have been trending Democratic for decades now.
