"Wisconsin Senate: Thompson (R) 50%, Baldwin (D) 38%."

A new Rasmussen poll.

Only 5% support "some other candidate," which is — I think — awfully bad news for the younger, more crisply conservative candidate Eric Hovde (whom Rasmussen doesn't even mention).

It's also bad news for Baldwin — and I think, for Democrats generally — as Baldwin had been closing in on Thompson last month, getting her percentage up to 44. I'm tempted to speculate about the Walker recall election, which is the main thing we've been hearing about in Wisconsin in the last month. Baldwin's losing so much ground in that last few weeks might suggest that Walker's message is resonating.

ADDED: Hovde's campaign released an internal poll, conducted by North Star Opinion Research from May 6-8, showing Hovde gaining strongly on Thompson since February 7-9, when his name recognition was 27%. It's now 71%. (Thompson's is 100%.) In the earlier poll, Hovde got only 1% of the vote in a ballot test in which Thompson got 38%. In the new poll, Thompson has fallen to 30%, and Hovde is up to 27%. Hovde's Favorable/Unfavorable is 53/5, and Thompson's is 78/18.

It's early, your man Hovde can still make his move.

As for Walker, yeah, he's rocking.

Hovde needs to get to work.

Will there be debates before the primary?

Probably going to be less Walker supporters after this revelation. Not wingers of course. But I still don't think Wisconsin likes corrupt pathological liars.

You really are tormenting garage by not yet posting the story that has him in orgasmic bliss.

Yeah, Wisconsin doesn't like corrupt, pathological liars, which is part of the reason Doyle decided not to run again.

Of course there were a lot of people who voted for Obama, who's at the top of the corrupt, pathological liar list.

That's such an awesome argument.

______ did this! See! All even!

Garage, talk about the pot's calling the kettle black! "____ did this! See! All even!" pretty much sums up every comment you've made, especially since the Tuesday election.

No doubt you'll be reduced to "neener neener neener" next.

garage, haven't you got the "it's not about the unions, it's about jobs" memo? This won't hurt Walker one bit. Brings the collective bargain/union agreement out of the closet. It's a loser. Seems everyone knows that but you.

Why would anyone want to vote for Thompson OR Baldwin.

Talk about the lesser of two old and no-new-idea evils.

Please Political Parties: Give us someone interesting and innovative to vote for.

The Democrats are in for another epic defeat in all areas away from the coasts of the US and I am not talking about federal politics. I am expecting them to lose even more seats in state legislatures and in local governments around the country.

Democrats will do well in places such as California where they have managed to effectively eliminate Republicans via redistricting and by changing election regulations.

For example, in the June 5 primaries in California, all voters are given a slate of 24 candidates for the Senate seat currently held by Feinstein. The top two candidates in the primary will face a runoff in November, regardless of their party affiliation so from now on in California state elections the choice in November will be between two Democrats in nearly ever race. Republicans will no longer even appear on November ballots for most races including Governor in the future. The next election for Governor in 2014 will likely feature the top two Democrats.

But in the rest of the country, the Democrats are going to take another pounding as bad as or worse than the pounding they took in 2010.

What does Walker mean when he says "you use divide and conquer"?

Yep

Hovde is pulling even with Thompson in this polling company's analysis.

"What does Walker mean when he says "you use divide and conquer"?"

Pretty much the same thing as Obama said when he stated "I won."

Pretty much worked out for the governor....judging how Barrett avoids anything even tangentally associated with a public employee union.

And the public unions brought this upon themselves too. The fissure between them and the private sector unions was set to be exploited. Such a fissure was also made worse when the public unions bullied every Democrat to vote against a mine that the private sector unions wanted.

May the best panderer win.

Or is a Tea Party wind blowing in Wisconsin under a different name.

The old timers are not going to change the way they did it in the 1990s.

We need alert 2012 candidates like Hovde that can start something new.

Le sigh. "I know what you are....."

If you think "divide and conquer" isn't poison to private unions ears, you're kidding yourself.

The GOP political convention is this weekend (May 11-12) in Green Bay. It's almost certain that Jeff Fitzgerald will do badly in the vote for the party's endorsement and will pull out soon, making it a three way race between Tommy, Neuman, and Hovde. If Tommy doesn't get the endorsement from the State party GOP regulars who he's been schmoozing for the last 30+ years, watch his numbers implode. His support is half a mile wide, and a quarter inch deep, and Tommy hasn't exactly been nimble in dealing with the state's fluid political environment.

Thompson and Neuman are also having trouble attracting funds, which isn't a problem for Hovde.

I wouldn't read anything into a poll that is so far behind the curve that it doesn't even include Hovde as a candidate - I know he's feeling very confident about where things stand right now.

CG

What does Walker mean when he says "you use divide and conquer"?"

Well, if you read what he says next that might give you a clue:

"So for us," the governor continues, "the base we get for that is the fact that we've got - budgetarily we can't afford not to. If we have collective bargaining agreements in place, there's no way not only the state but local governments can balance things out. . . . That opens the door once we do that. That's your bigger problem right there."

The only one that wants to keep this a secret right now is the recallers. Collective bargaining is a loser. They know it. Walker knows it.

Tammy Baldwin is an empty pantsuit. She obviously never read the Peter Principle. Or, she couldn't understand it.

Curious George said...

Hovde will the GOP nominee, and the next Junior Senator from Wisconsin.

The poll doesn't make any sense unless its just a hypothetical matchup between Thompson and Baldwin.

Where is Mark Neumann in this analysis? Two years ago he had quite significant support when he ran for the Republican nomination for governor. And I find it hard to believe that Hovde also doesn't figure into the equation given the amount of money he's spending running ads.

Rasmussen probably assumes Thompson will get the nomination but that's far from certain.
