They're softening us up to accept more intrusion into our lives, more violation of our civil liberties, more removal of Constitutional protections.

And Americans still are legally prohibited and restrained at every turn from achieving energy independence in the USA while we sit on all of the oil, coal and natural gas that will ever be needed. We can at any time make the desert asshole's oil reserves irrelevant. And everybody in DC knows that.

Not true on 3 counts:

1. We could be a lot less dependent on Arab oil, but not totally independent. Not without Obama electric cars and development of a synthetic fuel industry. Sorry, praying to Jesus, Freedom for Freedom-loving oil firms, and magic miracle new oil-finding tech will not change that. We CAN reduce dependency and bolster strategic reserves and cut a lot more with conservation. Which would make us a LITTLE BIT LESS HARD HIT if the Muslim oil spigot was turned off.

2. Even if we DO all that, Arab oil will never be strategically irrelevant, anymore than Russian oil or Iranian oil or Nigerian oil or Canadian, Mexican etc. oil will be.
Because our strategic partners in Asia and Europe will need it and will buy it, along with emerging nations like India.

3. And with lots of money and clout still, the Arabs will have money honestly gained from their resources to spend as they please. And we COULD walk away from the ME if we wanted to - but for the unfortunate problem of "Our Special Friend, Israel" and borderless Islamic extremism.; 5/8/12, 3:54 PM
