"i think its totally awesome but the guy talks about money and making a living too much."

"sounds like he does this for money more than as his passion and thats really sad because this looks like an awesome place."

That comment, giving grief to this tree-house-building guy...

... is typical of the way everybody's always trying to keep the hippie down.

hippies do a fine job of keeping themselves down. isn't that the point?

No. At this point in the development of the hippie culture, there are many evolved hippies, doing their thing and flourishing, like the man in the video, like me and Meade...

Not all hippies are lefties. I can respect that.

God forbid, he makes a buck out of something he enjoys.

In the South, they're called rednecks.

PS Somehow, I just don't see Meadhouse as hippies.

Genteel, maybe.

Well, we have winds up to 130 miles an hour in the vicinity. Even near our house, up to 80. And the more unnerving part is that when you get past a good windstorm, where it was blowing so hard you have to brace yourself and lean into it and sometimes you still go down, you find little areas, 50 or 100 feet across, where something really weird happened. Some call them microbursts. They seem to be an air equivalent to the volks that hydrologists and paleo-geomorphologists are beginning to study. Just in that little area, mature trees are downed, or even more eerily, snapped off 30 feet above the ground. Right in the middle of a steady power release, generic howling 80 mph winds, something freakishly powerful occurred, something that is to the gale as the gale to the zephyr. With that in your neighborhood, you try to think about living in his tree houses. It makes me queasy. It is ... disequanimitizing.

Weird - this is the second time that something that Ann has linked to with UTube has instead linked to some "Boots and Cats" video.

This guy is awesome.

Can't wait to show my son. His furniture is somewhat rustic-looking, and we are painting his room to look like an elevated Ewok house on Endor.

Previously, his wall had a giant map of Tanzania painted on it with a safari theme in the room.

Pay no attention to money or making a living, and you will spend every moment contemplating money and making a living as you scratch out your desperate existence.

It's good to remember that there are different species of hippies, even though they may all look the same and do the same drugs.

There are a good number of libertarian hippies. These guys cleared out of the cities in the 70s and became farmers or carpenters, more interested in staying off the grid than protesting. They're very different than the parasite hippies, who desire communitarian living so that someone else does the work.

I wouldn't label this guy a Hippie. More a Whole Earth Catalog counter culture type that did something productive with his life.

Loved that video! Loved the idea, the engineering, the guy's whole attitude. Outstanding!

Thanks for linking to it, Althouse.

Most people discover passions in pursuit of a living.

As a gift, Althouse should send Meade to the next Global Treehouse Symposium.

This thing attracts really interesting folks from all over the world. And, boring old me goes too.

You forgot about rich folks.

Plenty of folks are sitting on huge piles of dough, w/ millions more coming in every year w/o much attention paid.

If nothing else, you should know that Romney pulls down twentyish million a year w/ blind trusts.

You think Romney didn't pay attention to money and earning a living? We know that he did.

Re: Rich people -- Mitt Romney's blind trust doesn't manage itself -- he's paying people to manage his money. That's a full time job for an office of financial analysts, accountants, tax attorneys, etc. No doubt Romney keeps an eye on their results.

Regarding the treehouse builder -- that was incredible to see his level of creative accomplishment and his great humor about the whole business.

The kind of devices he has created to deal with movement in the trees also has tremendous application in areas prone to earthquakes. I don't know if there is any direct connection but I know the Getty Museum in Malibu, CA uses similar technology for displaying artifacts in moving display cases and pedestals.
