The Hass Avocado (the good black kind with the wrinkly skin) was named after Rudolph Hass, a Whittier California postman who planted "the Mother Tree" in his backyard.
Oh, please. Carrots now days are mostly orange. That's true. Carrots in the olden days were red. And some were white. The important thing to remember is that carrots are the roots of Queen Anne's Lace.
But your question- are they orange for political reasons?-- assumes that carrots care what color they are, and further, that an individual carrot could decide. Or that there was some omnipresent force deciding for them.
I've grown the white & red ones and I have to say they are treats.
We should therefore prepare ourselves for a hybrid, organic blue pea hitting the market just prior to the 2012 election. Eat them in red states and you'll be transformed to a Democrat. I think I need to take my meds.
I made ginger carrot soup this weekend. It's even vegan since I let the carrots, onion, and ginger make the broth. Served cold with a dollop of Greek yogurt it becomes lacto/ovo vegetarian, but still delicious. And quite orange. My fingers were orange for a few hours after peeling and cutting two pounds of carrots.
wv: porken - ginger carrot soup is definitely not porken-beans.

As a bred and born Tennessee Volunteer, orange is fine by me.
Hmmm ... so carrots are orange as a tribute by Dutch horticulturists to William of Orange.
Here is a list of roses that were named after famous people.

Sounds like a cue for Michael Pollan to write another chapter of "The Botany of Desire"!
I don't know about the political reasons for the color but I do know that Carrot juice is murder

"The World Carrot Museum"
So little time in life to explore the really fascinating corners of our world.
In answer to the question, I'd say more due to vanity.
I had a friend in California who drank carrot juice day and night, she was the color of a carrot.
She had to be very cautious around bunnies.
Yes. Yes they are. Ditto for Orange Bell Peppers and orange tulips.
John: was that video shot at the Wisconsin statehouse?
