"Chaos erupted at Thursday night’s budget committee meeting as lawmakers tried to start debate on funding cuts to cities and counties money for 'choice schools; and recycling programs."

The State Journal reports:
As the meeting began at about 7 p.m., some six hours later than expected, protesters tried to speak over lawmakers and began chanting “Whose house? Our house!” Some argued with both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Others tried to give speeches about the budget and were carried out by police to the chants of “police state” and “shame!”

“You could be doing more harm than good,” Sen. Bob Jauch, D-Poplar, warned them as the pandemonium continued.
They're starting to get nervous. Will the protests screw up the recalls?

I wonder why it started 6 hours later than expected?

No one likes to be kept waiting that long.

So..."police state" is any state in which policemen do their jobs? Got it.

Precisely what are the protesters protesting? Seems like they're just upset that their socialist state fantasies are crumbling.

The debate never gets to the crux of the issues though does it? Only the people unhappy about it.

You would have virtually no idea what Althouse thinks about taking huge sums of taxpayer money from public schools and handing it over to private schools. But that's what being debated. Althouse only wants you to know that SOMEONE WAS NAUGHTY LAST NIGHT!

Seriously? They just now figured out how terrible, spoiled, bratty, selfish and stupid they are looking to the regular hard working (non unionized)people, who are finding it very hard to have sympathy for the protestors.

They were discussing repealing Doyle's decision to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. The horror!

"Police State" is now "any state where pitching a fit to prevent elected representatives from doing their job gets you forcibly removed."

But at least they feel morally superior.

It's about time those commie bitches in the public schools had our money taken away from them. Fuck them and the little Trotskys they produce. Exhibit A - the leftist redistributionists who squeal like little girls when their gravy train is threatened.

HELLO! When the cameras are rolling, a lot of lunatics seem willing and ready for their close-ups. Not just Gloria Swanson.

I have one word for Walker: Sir, please learn from DISNEY!

Crowd control is an art form. And, if you get to see large crowds, then it is time to figure out ways to run your business.

No. You can't call on your police team. But you can learn from DISNEY!

Also, I'd start to put in sound dampers in the Rotunda. There's no reason for sounds to bounce around like that!

(Once, Caltech, here in Pasadena, built their auditorium. Only to find out it was lousy with sound problems. So, ya know what? They put up sound buffers, attractively ... it looks like white trellis ... all around their hall.

Don't people write to your office with suggestions?

What about a sign "in case of fire" ... which limits attendance? What about pulling out some of the gallery, and be in the process of re-doing the floors?

Trust me. Disney knows how to control crowds, well. (And, they do it, while their business runs. And, they make profits.)

No, "police state" is now "any state with police". Their preferred alternative is "mob state"; and Madison's leaders are going to let them have that.

Hey, garage -

A lot of us feel the same way about the crap your guys are doing in Washington.

But the elections came out the way they did, so we have to deal with it.

So, yes, your allies making asses of themselves is an issue - because accepting that YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT TO GET YOUR WAY WHEN YOU LOSE ELECTIONS is part of the whole "representative democracy compact" we operate under.

Deal with it.

I smell a Meade operation. In disguise with his glue-on Amish beard he worked up these dupes into a frenzy by telling them a rumor that Russ Feingold had switched to the Republican Party so that he could win the 2012 Senate seat and that Kloppenberg had agreed to be his get out the extra votes chairperson. Wisconsin Politics...that's entertainment.

If you're talking about school vouchers (and I believe you are), you could say "taking huge sums of taxpayer money from failing public schools and handing it over to private schools.

Has someone shown that the private schools in question also fail?

The interest of the state is in educating children, not in keeping public school teachers employed.

The simple assumption that the money belongs with the school instead of the student puts this priority on it's head.

The only funding question that is relevant is how best to educate children, per dollar, not how best to prop up the public school system.

Hey garage,

How would you feel if right-wingers showed up at a WH signing ceremony, trying to prevent legislation from being signed?

Would you hail the wonderful participatory democracy? Or would you, like the rest of us, denounce the anti-democratic attempt to interfere with proper and legitimate functions of gov't?

Apparently, these protesters feel that it's illegitimate when reps elected by millions of voters try to do something they don't like. Tyranny of 30 Douchebags in a Public Hearing.

I talked to a young public school teacher in Philly the other day. He is quitting - he is tired of the school district constant shuffing of the Titanic deck chairs, the wasteful bureaucracy and the lack of job certainty in his present school.

It's crazy- he's the kind of teacher they should want to keep but it's jerkaround jerkaround all the time.

This might be a minor point, but if the only difference between the private school and the public schools is funding...well then, wouldn't the private school become the public school once they receive the vouchers? Won't they have students from Wiscosnin homes in them? They will be our new, highly functioning, non union, successful public schools.

KitaIkki: That was an excellent article. It asked how we would like it if grocery stores were like schools. Everybody is told which store to go to and what food they get.

Garage: Right now the state takes taxpayer money and uses it to educate all the children, even children I don't particularly like. Regardless of what their parents do or who their parents are. The argument is that society benefits from having educated children, so society can pay for them. However, there are loads of schools not doing a very good job. The left keeps hollering about using taxpayer money to educate some rich kids. As before, most people aren't paying much in taxes. I think parents who care enough to put their children in a voucher school are going to care about their child's education, and should be encouraged.

The most socialist thing we have is our schools, and they have shown little improvement over the years.

SixtyGrit nails it, as does Synova.

FedkaTheConvict: giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition is a link in a chain of unintended consequences.
First, No Child Left Behind demands testing all students. Wisconsin schools are required, by the State Constitution, to educate all students living in the school district boundaries. The Teacher-Administrator-School-Board Complex reasoning is if those students know they can't go to college, then they will drop out and screw up the statistics for the school district. Give them the hope of college, and they'll finish high school, and be out of our hair and off our hands. So, the Dems want to give instate tuition to illegal immigrants.

Colleges don't mind, as one non-white person looks like another non-white person to them. (Lots of private schools load up with real African students to fill that slot. i.e. students who are actually from Africa.) They get to meet their non-white racial quotas. Of course, the middle and lower class Whites pay. There are only so many seats in the Freshman class at state universities. Saving those seats for illegal immigrant's takes spaces away from legal residents.

Affirmative Action has not hurt Rich Whites, because their seats aren't lost. The best single indicator of getting get ACT or SAT scores is family income. Which could explain why the only student I ever worked with to get perfect ACT and SAT scores had two physicians for parents. He was also the youngest child in the family with two older sisters.

It will be telling when the final vote tally comes in as to who runs the state of Wisconsin; Madison and it's entitlement junkies or the silent majority outside the city limits?

Time to trim the sails on the University of Wisconsin flagship which appears to have forgotten it's mandate to teach and educate. The anarchists there are a threat to the dignity of the institution with no regard to the rigors of achieving academic excellence.

Those who prioritize output favor competition. Those who prioritize input favor government control. Lefties value teachers and administrators more than education, so they prefer government control.

Joe said...

Precisely means just that. All I see is a generic protest against a budget committee. The protesters are chanting nonsense, not giving SPECIFIC arguments. Are they for "choice schools" or "recycling programs" or simply protesting for the sake of protesting?

What they aren't doing, in case I wasn't clear, is making a cogent argument in the context of there not being enough money to go around. It's all fine and dandy to protest cuts in general, but what then is the solution?
