Andrew Cuomo vs. Carl Paladino = Fredo Corleone vs. Fredo Corleone.

... says Nick Gillespie, who's allowed to say things like that because his mother is Italian.

(Sloppily video'd from the Eliot Spitzer CNN show tonight.)

Nick Gillespie seemed like a libertarian with no fear of speaking his mind, since the Libs have no candidates running. I confess to enjoying the banter, although my wife quickly pointed out that, " He (Spitzer) has no right to be judging anyone". Which of course is true about nearly everybody on TV. The show moves along fast, and pure talking points reciters are rare or made to look foolish by Spitzer.

Fredo was the brother who was a little, incompetent pussy?

Nah, Steve Sailer's got it right: "Paladino and Cuomo exemplify two quite different but equally stereotypical Italian male personalities, the boisterous Sonny Corleone and the watchful Michael Corleone."

That show should hire traditionalguy for PR.

It's almost as if the show has nocked Palin down to number two on tg's list of favorite things.

I am actually insulted that Gillespie feels the need to preface his remarks comparing to men to the same movie character.

What the hell is that all about? Non-Italians should feel bad about comparing both guys to Fredo?

FWIW: Steve Sailer makes a more apt comparison (and, even better, doesn't apologize like a wuss for it) where Paladino is Sonny and Andrew is the more taciturn Michael. http://isteve.blogspot.com/2010/10/two-kinds-of-italians.html

Carl Paladino has waged a campaign of almost stunning incompetence. He threatens to "take out" the reporter for the NY Post. The NY Post is the Republican paper and, prior to the threat, was disposed to report favorably on his activities. Now in every picture of him that appears in the paper, he looks like the undead come back to feed on human flesh. Beyond that, he staged the confrontation in a public way in which he appeared to be a thug, and the reporter looked like the cool guy. And accusing Cuomo of "legendary prowess". That's supposed to be an insult? He should have hinted that Kerry Kennedy, his unfaithful ex wife, had reason to hang horns on him because...well, let's just say she had her reasons. Now that's an insult....And when the papers are full of harrowing stories of cruelty to gays, he chooses this moment to campaign against gay marriage.....I know it's fashionable to spurn professional politicians, but he is so tone deaf and clumsy that he gives amateurs a bad name. Andrew Cuomo is truly Fredo Corleone but Carl Paladino is Joe Pesci.

1jpg.. You are correct.Cruel neutrality is not my favorite style. I enjoy the culture war too much to sit it out, but I try to honor talented people in the fight from both sides. Usually I have to rely on a super intelligent wife for honest and critical correction. What would we be without the loyalty of the people around us?

The comment was horribly unfair to Fredo Corleone ... these clowns make him look loyal, competent, and masculine....

I would always call Ted Kennedy, "Fredo," and almost everyone got it.

Allow me to give a cultural perspective, as it were. There is a pecking order of Italians that is geographical and visually easy to understand. The further north the higher class, the further south, lower.

When the great Dennis Hopper died our prof played some classic scenes form his flicks. The scene in True Romance where the Hopper character tells the Sicialian mobster played by Christopher Walken that he is descended from African niggers pretty much sums it up.

The great Joe Dimaggio was haunted by this pecking order. He was the son of a poor, Sicilian, fisherman. He lived in a city[SF] where there were many northern Italians. The southern Italians in SF were proud and yet haunted by Amadeo Giannini. This northern Italian[born in US but family was from Genoa] founded the Bank of America. One of the reasons Joe D was always well dressed and scrubbed was to compensate for this self image.

You have two southern Italians going @ it in NY. Both of my grandparents were born in the south[Bari and Naples]. The southerns talk loudly and brashly. I would have to cover my ears in my grandmothers house when I was little.

Finally, when US tourists think about going to Italy, there is, of course, Rome on the itinerary. But invariably, it's Florence, Venice, etc. that heads the list of destinations. That is indeed where the culture lives. The people are classy and reserved. But, go south for some animated, loud, gracious...and yes sometimes nasty people.

Paladino may be Sonny, but I do not think Andrew Cuomo is Michael; more like Carlo, the sister's husband.

i think if even a non-italian said it, there wouldn't be a problem. Fredo is more considered a symbol of incompetance, than anything.

I traveled by train from Genova to Roma. A woman with to kids was standing next to me, yes i did not know that i need reservations to be seat. When we entered the train a teen or young adult was using two seats for him. After he was embarrased( it took more than a hour ) he said to the woman that she can use the seat. Se refused to do so. My wife was able to seat down because a mature woman ( 40-50) gave her seat to her. In every stop that air conditioning was off. When we reach Roma ( first station)the woman get down( she was from Genova) And the little p*** said we are in the south they take us the air conditioning. He was from the south
Milano is a cleaner New York or London. Napoli is a uglier and dirtier southamerican city where garbage is on the street until politicians pay the Camorra their due.
In Sicily , in 1952 began the building of a hospital . Its still on work,
BTW: Sonny finished with the fishes. And Freddo finish as casino manager
