... 2007:
A photograph taken from my apartment in New York in the fall of 2007. Here's the post, not that I added words to it. And here is my post that morning, looking at the skyline in the fog. And here is the skyline on the evening of the 10th, with the memorial lights cut short by the low-hanging clouds:

These shots appear to have been taken somewhere in Brooklyn.
I remember watching the same display from the waterfront in Jersey City.
It was a moving memorial.
I was on the 11th floor of a building at the end of Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights. Just above the Promenade. Courtesy of Brooklyn Law school, where I was a visiting professor for 1 year.
Towers of Light is the best we can do, even 9 years after?
We have become a pathetic shell of a nation, haven't we?
I think I'm in the minority but I love those Towers of Light. No matter what else we build there, I think they should stay.
Now if they were on top of two new towers that were even taller than the original, that would be even better.
Who the hell cares? Seriously, folks, it's time to get over this.
I have to admit I was appalled by the 911 thread yesterday.
It was very disappointing.
Some of our best commenters were at their worst.
I have to admit I was appalled by the 911 thread yesterday.
If you check the comments to the 2007 post Althouse linked, you'll see that GasRage and Beth were just reprising the roles of Jeremy/Luckyoldson and downtownlad.
It was very disappointing.
It was not "disappointing", it was disgusting.
They behaved like the Fred Phelps gang, so driven by their overwhelming hatred that they had no respect for the solemnity of the occasion, the memory of the event, the feelings of the people around them, or anything else.
For people like Jeremy, Beth, GasRage, Cook, MUL, downtownlad, and the Phelps crowd, the driving need to express their ignorant, venomous hate in a venue where they know they'll get attention is paramount.
Reading the original post made me remember what a clueless little fuck downtownlad is. Fuck you pal, I still live near the WTC and saw people jumping out of the towers on 9/11 too, and guess what else - I'm a teabagging wingnutter.
Do yourself a favor and get out a bit more and meet some New Yorkers outside your WoW guild.
